    3. no thank needed because there's a kicker here. ship lists weaver, see weber weber, (weaber, webber, weaver, webher, wever) and i don't have to tell there is a ton of them. pa. merchant, 1732, a. list, johannes weaver, b. .kst, johannes weber, c. list johannes weaver. lydia, 1743, a list, heronimus weaver, aged 27, b. list hironimus weber, c. list hirieonimus weber. so in bucks co, there was hermanus weaver (weber), the name is indexed as weaver and also as weber. on oct. 12, 1739, by john and thomas penn to peter lester for 204 acres of land on cook's creek near durham, spingfield two, the land was sold to jacob weaver in 1742. so its your call. 2. Jack, you do not say when your family came to this country. My Maurer family was indeed German, and we even knew the town name, however, I had never been able to find his immigration. I did some historical research, and found that at the time of his immigration, there was a war going on in Germany. I accidentally found him emmigrating from Switzerland. Apparently, he left Germany and went to Switzerland, stayed there a few years until he had the money for passage, then left from Switzerland. He never shared this little piece of his immigration with family!?? 1. [PABERKS] Swiss vs Germany Immigration
    2. James Stone
    3. Regarding our Swiss vs. German discussion... Germany didn't look like it did today in the mid 1800s. Has anyone checked to see if Switzerland was yet a separate country then? It is possible Switzerland was another one of those chunks of Germany that elected to be apart when the boundaries were established. There is a piece of "Germany" called "East Prussia" Based on OUR maps, it does not exist. Yet, as late as the 1960s it sure enough showed up on German maps. We simply call it part of Poland. A major town in East Prussia is Gedansk (SP?). Germany claimed it because it was settled by Germans, perhaps dislodging folks already there. Same with the Alsace-Lorraine country between Germany and France. That border has been 'contested' for hundreds if not thousands of years. A friend of mine claimed her relatives immigrated from Russia. Their surname couldn't be more German "Gotlieb" (I may have transposed the I and E like I frequently do in German). Yet they were 'Russian' because the town was in Russia at the time of immigration. For Europe, it is often best to know a town where someone was from...the national boundaries change frequently over the course of a few hundred years. I guess it's kinda like folks from "French West Africa." James

    3. Thank you all for the Forney lookups. There certainly are quite a few of them, seeing how there is only 1 listed in 1820/1830 censuses for Berks County. Now to figure out which family is the right one! Does 1 step forward, 2 steps back come to mind?? Again, thank you so very much for your help. 1. [PABERKS] Berk County Books Lookup
    2. Elaine Sharp
    3. Geri and Diane, First of all, thank you so much for the past Klein/Kline lookups for me (still trying to figure out where everyone fits) and a big thank you for offering to do these lookups. Do you have any surname "Forney" in your book(s)? Particularly looking for a Catherine Forney b. ca 1823 or her family. In the 1820 census the only Forney listed in Berks County is a John Forney in Maidencreek; 1830 census, the only Forney family I find in Berks County is a Jacob Forney in Maidencreek. Thank you. Elaine
