    3. In the fairly stable period of 1766 to 1772, one pound in Pennsylvania currency converts to $43.80 in 1993 U.S. dollars. At the "sterling" rate of 20 shillings to the pound and 12 pence to the shilling this places the value of the shilling at about $2.17 and the pence at about 18 cents. It follows then, that one dollar in 1993 is equivalent to $9.76 in PA dollars of the period. There are, however, several other problems to take into consideration, not the least of which is the fact that any index is an average for a particular location in time, and doesn't reflect regional differences. Further, the value of money changes continuously and thus so does the index. See http://www.continentalline.org/articles/article.php?date=9602&article=960203 for additional information. 1. Re: [PABERKS] Elizabeth SMITH/SCHMIDT/var
    2. Diana Quinones
    3. Kathy, There is a will abstract for a Peter SMITH, Brunswick, written 2/24/1809 and probated 6/12/1809. He mentions 2 youngest children Elizabeth and William. Wife is Eva. If your Elizabeth was born 1790, she would not be 21 in 1809, and she married in 1811, after the death of this Peter. Have you checked out this Peter, wife Eva? Other children in the will were John, George, Jacob. Brother Baldaser/Balthasar SMITH and son Peter were named execs. At Host Reformed, Tulpehocken, Peter and Eve had these children bapt under SCHMIDT: Johannes b 11/25/1776, bp 12/22; spons: Johannes Trautmann Johann Henrich b 6/2/1779, bp 6/13, spons: Henrich Leiss and wife - Henry must have died young) Johann Jacob 5/5/1781 bp 5/27 spons: Georg Adam Wagner and wife Johann Henrich 7/25/1783 bp 8/17, spons: Henrich Leiss and wife Johann Georg 2/11/1786 bp 3/26; spons: Johannes Wagner, single Maria Magdalena 11/17/1788, bp 12/14 spon: George Wagner and wife At St Paul's Windsor: Peter and Eva are parents of Johann Peter SCHMITT 9/30/1786? (He seems close in birth to Georg). Bapt 12/31/1786, spons: Peter Joh and wife. I don't see any records for Elizabeth and William. Peter and Baltzer SMITH had a sister Maria m GEIGER, Elisabeth m KAISER, and a brother Philip who had a son William. Maria's will is filed 5/25/1811 in Reading under Maria GEIGER, and she directed tombstones for her parents and herself in her will. She mentions her brother Peter dec'd and gives his children 5pds each. re: BECKER There is a Maria Margaret BECKER born 2/6/1783, parents Jacob and ---, bp 11/27/1786 at Schwartzwald Reformed, spon: Henrich BICKLE and wife Maria Margaretha. Could she be the wife of Abraham B? Her age is within the range to marry in 1806...... Now the DeTurck genealogy book, p 107, says that Abraham B DeTurk was married to 'Elizabeth' BECKER and they are both buried on the Boone farm in Exeter. Are there cemetery readings for his wife? I only find Abraham's dates in the Private Cemeteries book. His will admin papers show wife 'Maria' was administrator in 1820 with his brother John. Maybe she was a 'Maria Elizabeth'? I don't see anything for that name in Berks Co Births by Humphrey, or Berks Co Church Records by Wright. But this Maria Margaret BECKER is the only one born near Abraham's time. There is a will for a Jacob BECKER, Hereford probated 12/7/1808. Wife is Mara Elisabeth, but the children are not named and some are minors. He names his wife and brother-in-law Christian CLASE as execs. It is possible that Maria Margaret one of his daughters born 1783? Another will to check out on your next trip! Diana in AL ---------------------------------------------- Kathy at kjstefanik@cox.net Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2008 Subject: [PABERKS] DeTurk/Schmidt/Unger/Becker Last year I received a cutting of an Easter cactus, which originally belonged to Esther DETURK (1813-1891). It is now in its first (for me) glorious!! bloom. I am taking that as a serendipitous sign that I should post my queries about this gg..grandmother. Esther DETURK (wife of Abraham BECKER DETURK, buried Strausstown) is the daughter of Elizabeth SCHMIDT (1790-1874) and Daniel UNGER. Daniel UNGER is the son of Herman UNGER and Elizabeth KEIM. I have searched and searched and searched for the parents of Esther's mother, Elizabeth Schmidt. What I know from Elizabeth's headstone at St Lukes (Perry Twp) are dates 15 August 1790 - 1 August 1874. I know from Elizabeth's Berks & Schuylkill Journal death notice that she was Daniel Unger's widow and that she was living near Shoemakersville when she died. And I know from Der Adler that she married Daniel Unger on 11 August 1811. Elizabeth's children include Sarah m. Henry Wheeler, Esther m. Abraham DeTurk, Elizabeth m. John Becker, Lovina m. Solomon Graeff, Caroline m. Henry Gardner, Susanna m. George Moll and Isaac m. Syria Weidman. (have more info if anyone is interested in any of her children). I've pored through Smith/Schmidt wills at the Berks courthouse but have not found one that mentions a likely Elizabeth, and I''ve studied and restudied pastoral records in Windsor/Perry township, but to date have missed any reference to Elizabeth Schmidt's parents. Any clues, any! suggestions, where else I should look next, are very very very much appreciated. Also a mystery are parents of Maria Becker (Esther DeTurk's mother-in-law). Maria Becker was married to Abraham Bertolet DeTurk (1778-1819). I know almost nothing about Maria, other than that she married Abraham in 1806 and is involved in settling Abraham's estate. Again, any clues to Maria's identity are very much appreciated!! Thanks for any leads!! Kathy, in CT

Hello, I was wondering if someone might be able to go to this cemetery and get a couple of photos for me. I am needing Jacob Liebengut died April 1758, his stone should have an etching of a tomahawk on it because him and his family had been scalped by indians on that date, sorry don't know the day they died, also of his wife Margaret or Margaretha Sands-Liebengut she died the same date. The cemetery is Christ Evangical (spelling) Lutheran Church Cemetery located in Strousberg? I would gladly pay for your time, and sending via email is fine with me. If you happen to come along any other Liebengut's I would gladly pay for them as well in the same cemetery that is. jamie ==== PABERKS Mailing List ==== PABERKS@rootsweb.com To contact the List Administrator: Rick Berkheiser, PABERKS-admin@rootsweb.com To visit the Berks Message Board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.st ates.pennsylvania.counties.berks To visit the Berks County, PA website: http://www.pa-roots.com/~berks/ Hosted by Nancy Freehafer ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PABERKS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Geri, I wasn't complaining about the wonderful work you are doing, I just thought if someone was looking for the place, it might help to know that is had a different spelling which would make it easier to find. Keep up the good work. Bob
