She is in the 1870 US Census and her birthplace is listed as Wurtumburg (Württemberg). I looked up your Annie Ellen Wanner Auman and found her in 1930, 1920 and 1900 US Census. Each time her mother is listed as born in Pennsylvania. It doesn't appear that the Margaret in the Sailer household is the mother of your Annie. I don't find any other Margarets, Maggies, Mollies or Mollys in 1870 or 1880 US Census. It's possible that she went by her middle name or Margaret was her middle name. She and her parents could be following the 4th or 11th commandment. http://www.bitler.org/humor/index.htm Rich Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her death certificate lists Margaret Wanner as mother and (unknown first name) Weidner as the father. The birth was illegitimate. In the 1870 census, Margaret Wanner is listed as a domestic servant in the household of Henry and Sarah Sailer in Oley. If anyone has information that might lead to the discovery of Mr. Weidner's first name, I would appreciate the help. One recent suggestion is Elias Weidner who in the 1880 census was listed as the husband of Amandah but was single in the 1870 census and living with his parents. Unfortunately, W. P. Coon does not mention that Daniel Levan had four children prior to marrying Susanna Siegfried and one is led to believe that Susanna is the mother of 16 children. I suggest you go to http://www.pa-roots.com/~berks/, scroll to the bottom of the Navigation Frame (the index) on the left hand edge of the page and click on "WILLS". After the "Wills" page opens, scroll down to "Levan" , click on "Levan, Daniel" and then "Levan,Susanna". Any questions ? I have done alot of searching and the only mention is on Susanna's Will that they are step-children. On Daniel's will it list them as his children. But I did notice that Elizabeth birth year and Susanna are the same so we know that it would be impossible for her to be the mother of the first four children. The Orphans' Court was one of the earliest courts like the other colonial courts was derived from the English judicial system. Established by William Penn's new government in 1683, the Orphans' Court was founded "to inspect and take care of the Estates, Usage, and Employment of Orphans...That care may be taken for those, that are not able to take care for themselves." Subsequent legislation gave the court added responsibilities relating to the guardianship of minors, real estate left intestate, partition of real estate, adoptions, and appeals from register of wills decisions. The Clerk of the Orphans' Court was responsible for keeping the records of the Court. He was required to provide books to record all petitions, orders, appointments, returns, certificates, assignments, recognizances, sentences, exceptions, decrees, and proceedings of the Court and to develop indices to all. Prior to the establishment of the Orphans' Court in Berks County, all matters were handled by the Court of Quarter Sessions. Berks County was erected in 1752 and prior to that matters were handled in Philadelphia, Chester, and Lancaster Counties, depending on where the subject lived. These were the counties that Berks was taken from. Register of Wills, Berks County, PA Orphans' Court Estate matters that require judicial disposition are handled in the Orphan's Court. Routine appearances before the Orphan's Court include: * Audits of accounts of executors, administrators, trustees, and guardians * Distribution of estates of decedents, incompetents, and minors * Appointment and control of guardians * Adoptions * Appeals from the Register of Wills involving probate matters * Inheritance tax appeals * Various petitions and motions As Clerk of the Orphan's Court, the Register maintains the docket and all other records of the Orphan's Court. The Register is required by law to advertise in the local newspapers the accounts submitted to him in Orphan's Court.

No, only those children who stood to inherit money or property. They are great records though. I had ancestors who were to inherit from their grandmother even though their mother was dead but the father survived. Great genealogical information there ! Children over 14 were allowed to select their own guardian. I don't know when those records started being kept -- the ones in Lancaster Co seem to be available at least from 1742, in Northampton Co at least from 1752 -- before then perhaps the records were just in the Miscellaneous books. Books of abstracts for Lancaster and Northampton have been done and can be purchased, but I don't know about Berks; you'd think someone might have done it for Berks.
