I am looking for the correct burial place for Johannes Albrecht b.1697 d. 1752 and his wife Anna Barbara. I have seen a number of places on-line that claim he was buried at the Fritz Burial Ground in Douglass Township, Berks County. I have been doing research on the Fritz Burial ground for nearly 20 years and have found no evidence that this Johannes Albrecht and his wife are buried there, nor any connection between these Albrechts and the families buried at the Fritz or living near it. This Johannes Albrecht and his family lived in Upper Bern/Bern Township, Berks County in a section that was taken from Lancaster County in 1752 when Berks was erected. Three of his children moved to North Carolina in the 1760s. The Fritz Burial Ground is more than 30 miles from Shartlesville, which is near where this Johannes probably lived. That seems a very long distance to travel to be buried in a small graveyard, set aside for those who lived around the graveyard. There is a Johannes Albrecht buried at the Fritz, but he was born 4 years after the Upper Bern Johannes Albrecht died, so he is not a son and as far as I can find, he was not related in any way to the Bern Johannes Albrecht. Does anyone know where this Johannes Albrecht (1697-1752) might be buried, or any proof that he is buried at the Fritz, besides what someone has posted on line? Betty Burdan
Betty ... I'm intrigued by the Fritz Burial Ground that you mentioned. Is it possible that it is not FRITZ, but FRIEFS or FRIESS? I ask because I have the obit for a Friess ancestor which states he was buried in the Friess family cemetery, but I have been unable to find any such cemetery. We have found different variations of the Friess spelling, so your post makes me curious.... A couple of suggestions - Ancestry.com is often available at no cost through your local library - all you need is a library card. Usually you have to do the research in the library on one of their computers - but its free! Another resource available through many libraries is Heritage Quest - this resource also contains many years of census (and other items as well) - sometimes you can find something at HQ, which you can't find thru Ancestry - and vice versa. Nice part about HQ is that with a library card, you can usually access it on your own computer in the comfort of your home, by going to the county library site an using your card number as your access code. If your ancestors turn out to be in Berks county/Reading, you are very fortunate! The courthouse is very helpful (not all county courthouses are) and much information is available online (not true for many courthouse records in other counties). When you find something on-line on the Courthouse site and you need to mail away for the item, the costs are very reasonable. The Reading Library will also do limited searching for you - by that I mean if you have, for example, a date of death, you can ask them to try and locate an obituary - provided they have the newspaper for that date. Their costs are reasonable, too. The Reading Eagle newspaper is also available for free on-line through Google News Archives. There is a search function, but that doesn't always work, so bear that in mind if you get a "no records found" answer. Sometimes you need to hand search the paper - which works better, the more definite the date! My final comment - if you think you have relatives in the Wilkes-Barre (Luzerne County) area, there is a wonderful email list - Courthouse Gang for that county. Very active and most helpful people. (Their courthouse is an example of the opposite of Berks county, unfortunately...) Good luck! Ruth Riley researching Nangle, Larkin, Henke, Winter, Felix, Siegfried in Reading

Hi, If your relatives are from Berks County, they probably got married there, http://rwills.co.berks.pa.us/geneology/. Has an index of names and you can look for them. If you do not live in Reading you can order a copy of the license and the license usually lists parents. The index starts about 1885 and goes to present, the only problem is common names, I needed to look up a William Moyer and there were about 60 of them in the 1885-1925 index section. When I was starting to do research, about 10 years ago, my dad insisted his great grandfather was George, but all my census research seemed to tell me he was Samuel, when we found out about marriage licenses, he actually drove down to Reading to get his grandparents marriage license, the next day. I live in Ohio, so I could not drop everything and drive over. He got the license and it clearly listed his great grandfather as being Samuel. Samuel died about 15 years before my dad's dad was born and his dad never had any stories about him, so when we started doing genealogy no one living had any info on great grandpa. But I'm very limited in information, and with the attitudes [and past] in my family, trying to interview for more isn't a fun time--or they just don't know. Or, as with my mothers' side, she was abandoned and adopted, and honestly doesn't know. So far in my study, however. I actually DID have an amazing breakthrough. My mother started looking for her family eighteen years ago. Given maybe six, she was able to find a relative with some basic information and articles on her parents [even photos of some family, I now know I'm the mirror image of my Great Grandmother. c:] And a rumour of her sister, with her possible name. Ever since, she's been looking for the said sister. When I was looking for information on my grandfather--I suddenly came across an inquiry on an adoption support site with a story almost identical to my mothers', of course, I called her over saying I think I've found one of her old threads.-In disbelief it was still around. Once I started reading it to her. I realized, it definately was not my mother, but her sister. Who has been looking for my mother aswell. Immediately, we contacted her. And a few hours later, got a phone call. I was responsible for my mother sharing the first conversation with her sister. --Unbelievable. So, I certainly can't stop there! Right now, I just want a basic idea of the origin for the last names of my family so I have an idea of the history associated and can get an understanding. Which I was able to find for most, but I can't find any record for Bronchik and Naftzinger. My mom says this would make sense as because most of my family came from places as Poland and Germany, they changed the name so they weren't associated with it, et cetera. And of course names always morph through migration.--which is also why I think I'm stuck with Yohn, maybe it was more traditional before my G-grandparents? But again, I am a noob to this, so, it could just be me. As well, I'm looking for any information on any of my ggparents names, everything I find on here is terribly inaccurate. Now, I do plan on going to the local Family History Center...but I don't know when I'll be able to get there. [I could go anytime myself, but as I don't know my way around the city it's in...and it's not the safest area, I figure it's best to have my father take me...but he's a busy man sos.] I don't want to stop my research until I get there [Especially as I made an agreement with my parents I'd only use a month or two here on ancestry--since it's so terribly expensive.], so any help or guidance is greatly appreciated. My tree is set to public so if you'd like to take a look, be my guest. On that note- I guess I should ask, it doesn't really matter that I put birth names in instead of married, adopted, et cetera? Aswell, I haven't added siblings to the list yet, one or two, but I've decided it's something to set for later on. Is this okay? Thanks! As I understand what you said in your two post, I would first try to find your Great Grandparents in the 1900 through 1930 census. If you can find possibilities, you may then be able to track back a couple of generations. You should check the City directories directories for all of the people whose names that you have found. In many city directories it list not only the parents but the school age children. Once you have some names, check the cemetery pages like Find-a-Grave. In some case they will have more information than dates or births and deaths. Check the library where her parents lived, the newspapers where you may find birth announcements, and similar sources. Find the genealogical societies in the area where the family lived, some have goldmines of information, others are a bust. Finally post all of the information that you can publish about the family to this and other list servers, message boards and forums, include names dates, and locations. There are thousands of people with names you may consider unique. All of the sources I mentioned can be found on place like Ancestry. While the fee may be high, compare that to the cost of gas to visit the many place you will be looking. One last thing. Don't accept the information in online trees as gospel, especially if it takes the family back to the Mayflower, and an English King or a 1000 years, because there are probably more errors than facts. However don't disregard them as in all myths there are pieces of facts that my lead you to the facts that will allow you to properly document your family.
