Author: bierhaus Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10437.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a CD from Berks County Genealogical Society with a Charles Evans Cemetery burial index recorded in 1997. If they died in Reading, figured they may be buried there. And they were. So with a burial date, I accessed the Reading Eagle at Google archives selecting search dates, 5 days prior to burial, up to the burial date. Then look thru the actual pages for the obit. I was lucky that they were at Google Archives. The Google people didn't 100% scan all papers, many are missing, and they stopped the project. The burial index for Charles Evans is not on line yet. BCGS sells the CD to raise some money to pay the rent, so they are not looking to put data on line. Someone, some day will ignore the copy-write and post it. I followed the 1810 deed up to the present land owners, looking for any hint of the burial ground or mention of the original land grant, didn't find anything. If you have any questions on the deed or deed site just ask me at bjburdan@dejazzd.com Who were the folks who set up the dedication of the new headstone? Were they perhaps the Schmehl Family Association? That at least shows that someone was around as late as 1994 caring about the graveyard. Just a suggestion, but I'd imagine Penn State or Univ of Penn would have interesting histories. I'm in Texas, and the Univ of Texas in Austin has huge collections of archival records dating back to Spanish explorers in the 1600's, some collections are by individuals, some by different Gov agencies, General Land Office, some translated, some genealogies & family papers/correspondence/photos, etc.... Good Luck! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SharonKleinstuber Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10436.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Betty, I have checked & double-checked the PA Archives, searching for a land grant to Adam Schmehl - without success. Adam arrived in Philadelphia 3 Sep 1739 on board ship "Loyal Judith" with his brotgher Nicholas. The next record I found for Adam was his marriage at Augustus Lutheran in Trappe on 31 Jul 1750. I figure he must have been indentured to someone to pay for his travel to America. But have not found any documetation to prove my theory. Adam was on the Ruscombmanor Tax Lists from 1754 thru 1789. He was counted in the 1790, 1800 & 1810 Census for Ruscombmanor Twp. I did not have the deed info you mentioned in your message. Thank you - I want to get a copy of the Deed. Hopefully it will be in English! I have a number of current photos from the BCAGP facebook page. Hoping someone has old photos they will share. Author: bjburdan1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10436.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sharon, I looked high and low for information on this suggested 1754 grant and could find nothing. I checked the land grants at the PA Archives,1733-1957,found nothing prior to 1810. However the census shows that there were Schmehls in Ruscombmanor Twp. as early as 1790, and Adam was a RW veteran, so he must have been there. DB 24 p. 330, Aug. 14, 1810 Adam Schmehl to Conrad Schmehl....Tract No. 1 (unreadable size), Tract No. 2 (34 acres 35 perches), Tract No. 3 (5 acres 145 perches) They being the same tracts which John Penn and Richard Penn Esquire on July 6, last past [1810] did grant to Adam Schmehl party hereto...and now hereby granted to Conrad Schmehl. Attached is a photo from 1994 that I got from a member of BCAGP that apparently was taken at a ceremony to install a new headstone for Veteran John Adam Schmehl. I do not know who arranged or conducted the ceremony, I only have the photos. Betty Burdan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SharonKleinstuber Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.berks/10436/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Anyone know what happened to the history & genealogy records of the Schmehl Family Association? According to newspaper articles in the "Reading Eagle", reunions were held most years between 1930 & 1953. The family historians were identified as Henry Schmehl; Luther C. Schmehl; Philip F. Schmehl &/or Mrs. Mary A. Kerlin. I have read thru many of the "Reading Eagle" articles & have a copy of the 1938 reuniuon program. Some of the info in the articles is confusing, contradictory &/or incorrect. I am especially interested in any documentation of how the immigrant, Adam Schmehl, acquired his land in the 1750s. And in any old photos of the original homestead & family graveyard. Sharon snkgenealogy@hotmail.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PABERKS] PA Probate Records Now Online
    2. Michael Messinger
    3. Hello everyone, I wanted to let everyone know that Familysearch recently added a very large collection of PA probate record images to their new website. The collection includes wills, orphans' court records, estate files, and several other types of records. It is organized by county, and each county has a different types of records and dates of coverage. The collection is not searchable, so to access the records you have to browse through page by page. If you have a reference from an index the records are fairly easy to find, even though you have to browse. Over the last couple of days I have explored the orphans' court records and found invaluable information about several of my ancestors that is not available anywhere else - and I hope that all of you will have similar success! Here is a link to the collection: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://www.familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1999196 Happy hunting! ~Michael Messinger~ -- "Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation." ~Robert Kennedy~
