if anyone remembers a few months ago, i was hunting for the tax lists for the early years of the county. well, i found them. wouldn't you know it, they are at the Beaver Center for Historical research (those people have everything ;) don't they?). what they have is not the original lists, but very very good copies, of every township, for the years 1800-1840. these are fun to look at if you are a nebby person, as most of us genealogists are, and you wonder just what your ancestor owned, and what his neighbors owned. if anyone knows what they mean by "OCCUPATION", please tell me, i can't decide if they mean what the perosn does for a living (if that's it, why not just say 'farmer' or 'miller' or whatever it is) or if they mean a dwelling place, like their house. Here is an excerpt, taken from the Hopewell Township List of 1937: [note: there's a monetary value next to each item listed, i just didn't feel like typing it] --McCague, John 6 a land, 1 horse, 1 cow, occupation --Morris, Uriah 193 a land, 2 horses, 2 cows, occupation --Miller, Hugh 400 a land, 3 horses, 3 cows, occuaption --Miller, Samuel occupation --McMillan, Charles 102 a land, 2 horses, saw mill, 2 cows, occupation --McElheny, William 200 a land, 40 do, 100 do, 3 horses, 3 cows, occuaption, new building --Oliver, William 1 house and lot, 1 cow, ?trade --Obney, William 108 a land, 2 horses, 1 cow --Oliver, Robert 2 a land, 1 cow, occupation --Prentice, James 50 a land, 1 horse, 1 cow --Prentice, William 1 horse, 1 cow, occupation --Prentice, Alexander 84 a land, 2 horses, 1 cow, occupation
