This post talks about things in the Pittsburgh region and at the National level, so if you are not near Pittsburgh, you may make use of the web sites given below for the national events. -- Elissa Powell, CGRS Certified Genealogical Record Specialist WESTERN PA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY regular meeting (FREE and open to the public) Saturday February 13, 1999, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Carnegie Library Lecture Hall next to the Carnegie Library, 4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh. Ronald E. Grim, Specialist in Cartographic History in the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress will present: "Getting Started: How Can Maps Help Me in Genealogical Research?" This is an introduction to how maps can help you locate your family. The second lecture is "Using Maps to Document German Immigration and Settlement in North America." Ron Grimm received his B.A. in history and geography from Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in historical geography from the University of Maryland, College Park. His publications include "Historical Geography of the United States: A Guide to Information Sources" (Detroit: Gale, 1982), and co-editor, "World Directory of Map Collections", 2d ed. (Munich: Saur, 1986) and "Images of the World: The Atlas Through History" (Washington: Library of Congress; New York: McGraw-Hill, 1996), as well as numerous book reviews and articles in geographical, historical, and map librarianship serials and publications. He has curated four Library of Congress exhibitions, including one which opened in Dresden, Germany in 1994 entitled "Deutsche in Amerika: Die Einwanderung im Kartenbild" and his most recent (1997) "Celebrating the Portuguese Communities in America: A Cartographic Perspective." Mr. Grimm is a part-time instructor at the University of Maryland, College Park and at Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland. He has lectured widely on the use of maps in genealogical research to local groups in the Washington, D.C. area, as well as to the Family History Society of Arizona and the annual conference of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. NORTH HILLS GENEALOGISTS regular meeting Tuesday, February 16, 7 p.m. at Northland Public Library, 300 Cumberland Road, Pittsburgh. Gary Link, former records manager for the Allegheny County Archives will speak on how to access county records, and which offices hold which records. This meeting is free and open to the public. WPGS COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP On Saturday, February 20, 10 a.m. at the Shaler North Hills Library on Mt. Royal Blvd. Reed Powell will do a live demo for the WPGS Computer Interest group about the Internet and genealogy. This is free and open to the public. COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY A beginning Genealogy courses will be taught by Elissa Scalise Powell, CGRS (Certified Genealogical Record Specialist).
