    3. Hi, This relates to my Gerwig ancestors and members of that family who lived in northern Beaver County and Zelienople in Butler County. I typed this in for someone on the Allegheny County list and figured I'd share it. Following is information that was sent to me by the Zelienople Historical Society. Although the family was definitely of German descent, Alsace was part of France at the time of the family's emigration. Also, Jacob was the son of Paul's deceased brother, Jacob. More on that in the next item.) - Beaver County Orphans Court Record Reel 4 On March 9, 1846, Magdalene Hawn, the widow of Jacob Garvick, late of North Sewickly Township, asked that Michael Hawn be appointed guardian of her four children who were under the age of 14. They were Sarah, Caroline, Henry and Dorothy. (Are Caroline and Dorothy the same ones mentioned in the 1850 Census? Perhaps. I haven't researched that yet.) On the same day, Jacob Garvick's son Jacob asked that Michale Hawn also be appointed as his guardian. - Registration of Deaths, Beaver County, Pa. compiled by Publishers of Beaver County Records, 1984. page 41 Jacob Gerwig, age 77, d. Garwig shown as living in Franklin Township. The following comes from "A Genealogical and Biographical History of Allegheny County, Pa." by Dr. Thomas Cushing (1889). I'm not certain about Cushing's scholarship but I generally distrust the county histories that were published at that time. The biographical sketches often consist hearsay and foggy recollections from the subjects themselves. (But what the heck - it might hold a few hints.) NICHOLAS J.H. GERWIG, merchant, Wilkinsburg, was born in Ross township, this county, November 14, 1846. His parents, Henry and Mary (Voegtly) Gerwig, now reside in the city of Allegheny; the former was born in Alsace, Germany, in 1822, and the latter in Allegheny in 1826. Henry Gerwig came to this country in 1836, and established a rope-factory in Pittsburgh, which is now succeeded by Bently & Gerwig, of New Brighton, Beaver county, in which he is still interested. Nicholas J.H. Gerwig was reared in the city, attended the German Evangelical school three years and the public school four years. After a course at Penn Institute, he, in 1861, set about learning the trade of rope-making, at which he labored five years. He was then employed in his father's warehouse as bookkeeper and salesman, and Jan. 1, 1871, became a partner in the business. The firm is now H. Gerwig & Sons, dealing extensively in ropes and cordage; our subject is also interested in the New Brighton factory. He owns sixteen houses in Wilkinsburg, four in Pittsburgh and four in Mansfield. He attends the Presbyterian Church, and in politics is a republican. Jan. 8, 1874, he married Anna Mary, daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Hall) Beckert, natives of Alsace, now residing in Reserve townwship, where Mrs. Gerwig was born. Mr. and Mrs. Beckert were married Nov. 7, 1836. Mr. and Mrs. Gerwig's living children are Frederick H.N., Clara Mary, Alma, Theodore Charles and Lucy Anna; three died in infancy. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
