    1. [PABEAVER-L] Gerwigs in France

    3. Just after firing off my last note, I realized that I also tried to do a little research in French records a few years back. I ordered the birth records for Oberbetchdorf, France, from the Family History Center at a local LDS. I don't speak French so I had some difficulty picking through the information. I wasn't particularly successful because of that. However, I did find a record that might prove helpful. I found birth records for Henry in 1837(perhaps the one mentioned in my previous note). Henry's father is listed as "Jacques Gerwig" and "Madeleine Wolff." However, the father signed the form "Jacob Gerwig" - perhaps being a typical stubborn German and asserting his "Tuetonicity." (I figure I can say that since I'm about 90 percent German and lived there for 6 years.) I think it's possible that "Madeleine" was the mother's French name and her German name was Magdalene. Another record mentions the birth of Salome Gerwig in 1831 to George Jacques Gerwig and Madeleine Muellemann. The signature, while still "German," is different from that in the item above so these are two different men. I hope this helps.Brian ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
