The following newspaper article appeared in the St. Louis, MO, area on Dec. 26, 1908: "MOTHER TRIES TO STOP MATCH, FAILS, OF COURSE - Artist, 19, and Girl, 17, Elope to Belleville and Are Married. "Mrs. Cordelia Pender's design to spoil the marriage plans of her daughter, 17 years old, and Edward W. Ullrich, 19 years old, by taking Bessie back to her home in Beaver Falls, Pa., miscarried Friday when the young people eloped to Belleville and were married by Magistrate Evans. "Two years ago Ullrich, who is an artist, went to Beaver Falls to visit relatives. He saw a girl on the street and was so attracted by her that he drew a sketch of her from memory. He showed the drawing to a friend and said he would like to meet the original. The friend recognized the picture as that of Miss Pender and arranged a meeting between her and Ullrich. "A year ago Miss Pender went to East St. Louis to visit her sister, Mrs. William Plever. She and Ullrich had become secretly engaged and he persuaded her to stay in East St. Louis. "When Mrs. Pender arrived from Pennsylvania recently to spend Christmas with her daughters she learned of Bessie's plans. Wishing to delay the marriage on account of the girl's youth, Mrs. Pender notified her she would have to return to Beaver Falls on the day after Christmas. Bessie telephoned to her fiance, and the couple arranged to be married Christmas Day. "Ullrich is a son of William Ullrich, a contractor, of 2514 Montgomery Street. The bride and bridegroom were given a wedding supper at the home of the latter's parents. Mrs. Pender was present and forgave her daughter. "The young couple are living in a flat at 1915 De Soto Avenue, which Ullrich fitted up a few days ago." Parents of the groom, Edward W. (Edmund) ULLRICH, were William August ULLRICH (b.1861 IN, d. abt. 1918 MO) and Clara WILLARD (b. 1865 OH). Edmund was b. 1889 in OH. Parents of the bride, Bessie Luellen PENDER, were Samuel PENDER (b. PA) and Cordelia Victoria ECKMAN (b. OH). Bessie was b. 1891 in Beaver Falls and d. 1983 in New Orleans, LA. Other children of Wm. A. & Clara ULLRICH were: Myra Mae(b. 1886 Louisville, KY, d. 1968 Kerr Co., TX); Wilber William (b. 1893 Madison, IN, d. 1963 TX); Ralph (b. 1898 IN, d. betw. 1900-1910). I am searching for any family links in Beaver Co., particularly in the ULLRICH/WILLARD side. Myra Mae ULLRICH was my grandmother. Thanks in advance for any information on these families!
