    3. Midge, Sorry, None of the units that we are looking into can be traced to Fort Donelson. Most of the units that we have been looking at are Cavalry, which did not play a part in the battle of Fort Donelson. Have you tried the Bates Books at the library? They have a listing of the units with names of all soldiers. You could also write to the Archives in Washington, DC for his military record. That would list his unit, if they could find him by just name. Are you sure that he was in a PA unit? I have looked through a few books and the only listing of troops that I can find so far are Iowa and Illinois. Grant was the commander of the battle and there were three divisions of soldiers. Major Gen. Charles F Smith, Major Gen. Lew Wallace and Major Gen. John A McClernand were the commanders of these divisions. A note from another book states the three largest union training camps were located in Washington, Cairo and St. Louis. Camp Defiance in Cairo reports that the men were in splendid physical condition and well drilled. It was from this camp that Grant took the troops that distinguished themelves at Fort Donelson. Sorry I couldn't help you more. Joyce joyce@cobweb.net
