Hello, I had a HUGE breakthrough on the Nye family of Beaver County today. Most of the Nyes in Beaver County descend from Andrew Nye. Andrew was the son of an Andreas Neu who lived around the Forks of the Delaware about 1750. We may now know the German town that Andreas Neu emigrated from. I found the information in "The Dansbury Diaries, Moravian Travel Diaries, 1748-1755," translated by William N. Schwarze and Ralf Ridgway hillman. Picton Press, Camden, Maine, 1994. The diary of Sven Roseen - which covers his missionary travels around what is now Monroe County, Pa., from 1748 and 1749 - mentions several encounters with Andreas Neu, who was married to Sara Rose and lived at the Delware Water Gap. Luar Kuykendall (our Selli/Sara Rose Neus future husband) is also mentioned. In these accounts, Roseen mentions that Andreas came from the area around Speyer, Mannheim and Worms. Later, he mentions that he came from the town of "Leustadt," which was "three English miles" from the town of "Fraensheim." After checking my German atlas, I couldnt find a Fraensheim or a Leustadt anywhere, let alone in the area that Roseen mentioned. However, I did find a Freinsheim that was about three miles from Leistadt, both were in the area indicated by Roseen. These are probably the towns we should be interested in. The spellings are phonetically similar (at least they are in German, if not in English) and the geography matches up very well. Leistadt is a suburb of Bad Duerkheim, which is on the German Wine Road just west of the Rhein River. Bad Duerkheim is famous for a "drink-yourself-sick-fest." They serve mediocre wine in liter-size mugs. I plan to find a LDS family history center near here and try to request the German church records. (I havent been to a family history center since I moved to this area so Ill need to locate one first.) I wish I had access to this book before I left Germany last summer. The diary entries offer a lot of information thats new to me. -- Andreas Neu had lived in Leustadt, Germany. The town was three English miles from Fraenstadt and both were near Speyer, Worms and Mannheim. -- Andreas and Sara had a daughter named Sara, who was born June 14, 1748. She was the couples first child. -- Sara Roos/Rose and Andreas had both been previously married. (This could have been assumed to be the case for Andreas if we accepted that our Andreas was the same man who immigrated through Philadelphia in 1733. I accept this but would still like to see some concrete proof, which might turn up in German records.) -- Saras father was High German and her mother was Scottish. -- Andreas had daughters named Catharina and Elizabeth from his previous marriage. This is based on the fact that Roseen lists their last name as Neu. -- Andreas lived "on the south side of the Blue Mountains, along the Delaware," in what is now Monroe County, Pa. -- Andreas had an occupation that required trips to Bethlehem to get leather. Bethlehem was the center of Moravian activity and he met other Moravians there. There is one item that is remarkable because of its absence: a son named Samuel. Family tradition says that the Samuel Nye who appears in early records from western Pennsylvania was the half-brother of Andrew Nye. Since daughters from Andreas previous marriage were mentioned, one would think that Samuel also should have been mentioned. Perhaps he was with his brother Michael, who lived near Easton. If anyone would like a transcript of the passages that deal with Andreas, or other information about the Nyes, just drop me a note.
