I am planning a trip to the above courthouses and would like to know the addresses for them. I didn't find a rootsweb list for New Castle, that's why I am writing this list for both courthouses. Are the old records, about 1850, kept there? Is there a special section to visit at the Courthouse? I think that there are no birth records for such an early date, but perhaps property records are there. I found an address for the Beaver County Genealogical Library in Beaver Falls. Is it open daily? Is there an e-mail address for it? Thanks for help with any of the above. Darlene ==== PABEAVER Mailing List ==== Take a Look at Your Ancestors! Darlene, The Lawrence Co. Courthouse is at 433 Court St. in Newcastle. [Phone: 724-658-2541] It sits on a hill and you can see it for miles. The Death and Birth records are in the clerks office and run from 1893-1905. All the old journals are squirreled away slap dash fashion in an back section. One of the gals may help you find the record book you need and it's pretty much find something to support the book and stand there and search away. As of about 2 years ago the books were in awful shape and coming apart, so don't get your hopes up too high. The only records older than that are the divorce and court records which run from 1855. There may be land records that are older, but since Lawrence wasn't founded until 1849, there aren't likely 1850 records still housed there. Just speculation on my part, but since the Southern tier of townships were previously part of Beaver Co., I wouldn't be surprised if they are still housed a the Wampum mine along with all the old original Beaver documents. If so, you're out of luck for these townships. The suggestion that you try the New Castle Library is a good one, but check the hours. They've cut back a bit...I made the 150 mile drive a while ago arriving mid morning and they opened about 3. What a bummer. They have an especially good obit file and the reading room has a good collection of local genealogy books. Good Luck. Ed Brobeck edbrobeck@adelphia.net
