    3. Jack, PA mandated that marriage records be kept, starting in 1885. Each county courthouse still holds these records through the present day. Births and deaths were kept at the county level from 1893 through 1905, then the State Office of Vital Records has the births and deaths from 1906 to the present. www.vitalrec.com There was a short time period from 1852-54 that the state mandated the keeping of these records. The originals all seem to be in Harrisburg now, but the LDS has them on microfilm also. You can find Mercer County's and Butler County's, 1852-54 births, deaths, and marriages that were recorded, as well as Lawrence County 1852-54 deaths, online at www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2. Haven't gotten back out there to get any others yet. Not all people registered these things, there apparently was a lot of opposition to it. We've noticed in Butler County in particular, that only a couple of Drs. came to the courthouse and recorded them. Pat "Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://www.raogk.org/"
