    1. [PABEAVER-L] CRAIL / Center Church Cemetery mysteries.
    2. G. R. Tafini
    3. Ruth GAGLIARDI brought up some interesting questions about the grave of her ancestor Kezia wife of Jonathon C. COLEMAN who was listed in several cemetery lists. There are several clues to this mystery in: Beaver County Cemeteries Vol. IV Closson Press; 1986. Page 18 CRAIL CEMETERY - Raccoon Township, Beaver Co., PA "Copied from Monuments in Crail Farm & Center Church Cemetery - July 1936 by Langnecker, Martin, Sarsfield & Saul" ------- "This is No. 27 on the 1936 WPA list." The list includes 14 inscriptions of burials from 1848-1863 with surnames: BARNS COLEMAN, Jonathon Aug. 9, 1863 Age 99 CRAIL POTTS PURDY RAMBO, Michael 1863 age 31 or 72? RAND page 58 Has an article from the Tri-State Genealogical Society Newsletter Vol. II No. 6, June 1981 written by my Mother, Dorothy (ROBINSON) TAFINI. It includes the inscriptions of 12 stones form burials 1851-1873 that we read at a small cemetery on Moffet Mill Road in Raccoon Twp., Beaver Co., PA in 1968. I believe that this is the same cemetery that was recorded as the CRAIL cemetery in 1936 by the WPA. There were 2 gravestones that appear on both lists: Jonathon C. COLEMAN Died Jan. 9th 1863 in his 99 yr. Footstone J. C. C. Michael RAMBO Died Aug. 31, 1862 72 yr. 9 mo. 8 d. Footstone M. R. I suspect that some of the older stones that were read in 1936 had disintegrated or fell over. We must have uncovered some stones that had fallen and had not been read in 1936. On a return trip to the cemetery in April 1981 these six gravestones that were recorded in 1968 could not be located: Kezia wife of J. C. COLEMAN Died Jan. 9th 1852 in her 66 yr. Elmira J. daughter of J & P RAMBO Died Mar. 25, 1866 aged 1 yr. 8 m. 25 da. Footstone E.J.R. Mary Ann wife of Wm. RAMBO died May 3, 1851 8[7?] yr. Mary M. wife of P. M. RAMBO Died Oct. 31, 1851 In the 19th yr. of her age Michael RAMBO [mentioned above] Samuel REED Died Sept. 9, 1873 aged 80 yrs 3 mos. 13 ds. The cemetery property owner told us that there had been some vandalism there in recent years. ---------- page 4 BAKER (FIGLEY) Cemtery, Center Twp., Beaver Co., PA Recorded by Denver L. WALTON Oct. 30, 1971. "Severely vandalized over the years. Only six stones left upon my visit, Oct. 30, 1971 -- none in proper position. George BAKER, pioneer settler of Beaver Count, is buried here. This is no. 35 on the 1936 WPA list. (called Figley farm Cem.)" His list includes Margaret BAKER, Elizabeth SHORT and 4 of the missing stones from the CRAIL / Center Church Cemetery: COLEMAN, Kezia w/o J. C. d. 1- 9-1852 66 yr RAMBO, Mary M. w/o P. M. d. 10-31-1851 In 19th yr of marriage RAMBO, Michael d. 8-31-1862 72 yr 9m 8d REED, Samuel d. 9- 9-1863 80 yr 3m 13d ------- page 22 FIGLEY Cemetery - Beaver Co., PA "Copied from monuments in July 1936 - by Langnecker, Martin, Sarsfield & Saul." 4 BAKERs who were buried from 1802-1872 ------- It would seem that the CRAIL / Center Church Cemetery in Raccoon Twp. was vandalized after 1968 and 4 of the missing gravestones found their way to the BAKER / FIGLEY Cemetery in Center Twp. by 1971. 1. [PABEAVER-L] CRAIL / Center Church Cemetery trip in 1968.
    2. G. R. Tafini
    3. In 1968 my parents Herman and Dorothy (ROBINSON) TAFINI, grandmother Bertha (RAMBO) ROBINSON and I set out from Grandma's home at Glenmoor in St. Clair Twp., Columbiana Co., OH for a day of cemetery hunting in Beaver Co., PA. We stopped first to pick up great aunt Laura (RAMBO) HICKMAN who was wearing her sun bonnet. Aunt Laura remembered putting flowers on the grave of her grandmother near Raccoon Creek in Beaver County, PA about 1900 with her father Samuel Allison RAMBO. In 1857, when Samuel was an infant, his mother was killed by a "cross dog". Aunt Laura did not remember her grandmother's name or the exact location of the cemetery. We stopped at Shippingport and talked with my granmother's cousin Cathryn (RAMBO) CALHOON. Her husband Carl CALHOON agreed to lead us to an unnamed cemetery on Moffet Mill Road. The cemetery has been identified as the CRAIL Cemetery and Center Church Cemetery. Most of the gravestones in the cemetery were laying flat, some covered with a few inches of dirt and leaves. A few stones were leaning against trees. We probed around and uncovered several markers. There were a number of flat river rocks that were used as markers with no readable markings. We recorded the inscriptions of 12 readable stones at that time including: COLEMAN KNOWLES MARR RAMBO REED Aunt Laura remembered just where her grandmother's grave was. It was laying flat and covered over. Abigail S. Wife of Daniel RAMBO Died Jan. 12, 1857 in her 26 yr Abigail was born 19 Aug. 1832 in Beaver County, PA the daughter of William SMITH and Margaret McDONALD. In April 1852 she married Daniel RAMBO son of Michael and Elizabeth RAMBO. We also found the gravestone of my gr-gr-gr grandfather Michael RAMBO and his mother Mary Ann wife of William RAMBO. 1. [PABEAVER-L] CRAIL / Center Church Cemetery directions.
    2. G. R. Tafini
    3. Ruth GAGLIARDI is planning a trip to Beaver Co. and would like to locate the graves of her ancestors Jonathon C. COLEMAN and his wife Kezia. I saw their graves at a small cemetery in Raccoon Twp. in 1968 while searching for my RAMBO relatives. On a return trip there in 1981 we could not locate several of the gravestones including Kezia COLEMAN's. The Crail Farm and Center Church Cemetery on Moffet Mill Rd. is in Racoon Twp about 4 1/2 miles east of the Shippingport Bridge which crosses the Ohio River. The cemetery is just west of Raccoon Creek midway between where Fishpot Run and Gums Run enter Racoon Creek. My maps are a bit old so if anyone can add to or correct these directions please let us know. Directions from Rt. 18. Rt. 18 runs generally in a SW direction through Southern Beaver Co. from Monaca to Frankfort Springs. It crosses Holt Rd. at a point about 2 miles directly East of the Shippingport Bridge. Turn East on Holt Rd. Heading East you will pass through the small community of Holt at Patterson Rd. Continue another 3/4 mile East on Holt Rd. and turn Right on Moffet Mill Rd. [I don't know if there is a road sign for Moffet Mill Rd. At one time Holt Rd. continued on to Raccoon Creek. My maps seem to indicate that it fizzles out now]. Moffet Mill Rd. meanders its way downhill toward Raccoon Creek. Travel about 1/2 mile and start watching for the cemetery which is on the left [north] side of the Road. The cemetery is just before you reach a road that intersects on the right and runs south along Raccoon Creek. If you get to Raccoon Creek you've gone too far. The cemetery may be hard to spot. The last time I was there in 1981 it was overgrown with trees. Most of the gravestones had fallen flat. A few were leaning against trees. There may have been a church at the site at one time, but any evidence of the building is long gone. I did hear of a Boy Scout project to clean up the cemetery. Hopefully it is in better shape now. I suggest that you stop at the farm house just west of the cemetery on the North side of the road. The man that lived there in 1981 said that the cemetery was on his property and was not happy that we entered without his permission. I believe that his name was Mr. HOLLISTER. He said that there had been motorcycle gangs and wild parties in that remote area in recent years and that the cemetery had been vandalized. We soothed him by promissing to send him a write up of the inscriptions that we found at the cemetery. In 1968 and 1981 Jonathon C. COLEMAN's gravestone was leaning against a tree in the North West corner of the cemetery. It read: Jonathon C. COLEMAN died Aug. 9, 1863 in his 99 yr. There was a nearby footstone still in the ground with initials J C C In 1968 we also saw his wife's gravestone. We couldn't locate it in 1981. It read: Kezia wife of J. C. COLEMAN Died Jan. 9th 1852 in her 66 yr. I will comment more about the missing gravestones in another message. Regards, Gary R. Tafini gtafini@tir.com Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA

    1. [PABEAVER-L] LOWRY, SMITH, and COCHRAN
    2. I'm trying to find out information on the LOWRY, SMITH, and COCHRAN families. I know quite a bit about the LOWRYS. William LOWRY [1760-1842] moved from Chester County, PA to Big Beaver Township during the 1780s with his wife Sarah WILSON. I don't know if any of William's siblings moved with him. William and Sarah had a son named Adam LOWRY [1792-1843] who married Rachel SMITH. Adam was born and raised in the Big Beaver area and died tragically from a farming incident. I have no information on Rachel, and I'm guessing that her family was from Big Beaver. I don't know if Adam had any siblings. Adam and Rachel had a son named William B. LOWRY [1821-1904]. I don't know if there were any other children. William B. married Sarah COCHRAN, who later died, and they had a son named Joseph Frazier LOWRY. Sometime before the start of the Civil War, William B. and Joseph Frazier moved to Lawrence County, PA because that is where they enlisted in the 101st PA Vol. Inf. The family later moved away several years after the end of the Civil War. I don't have any information on the COCHRAN family, nor information of any other siblings for Joseph Frazier. When Joseph Frazier LOWRY died, his wife Jennie McFARLAND had the body shipped back to Beaver County for burial. Does anyone have any information on the SMITH and COCHRAN lines in Beaver County? 2. Patti Caldwell Fasy
    3. Hi y'all, I thought that I'd try something new, a Sunday mini-newsletter from me so please give me some feedback and if you have any information that you'd like to add to it, please contact at <impattic@mediaone.net>. First, while I have your undivided attention <g> a few posting rules (?). When posting a query to the list always make the Subject line pertinent to your post. ie: Subject: CALDWELL, Patti Armstrong Co. You'll find that if you get in the habit of doing this, you'll get many more replies to your queries. Lots of folks use email filters & won't see your message if the Subject line isn't utilized properly. And when your answering a post, change the subject line to reflect the answer (especially when answering a digest list post). Otherwise the Subject line will read: "CALDWELL-D Digest V98 #49" or some such and we won't have a clue of what your replying to. This list has the Reply function set up so that all replies go back to the list. If you also want your reply to go to the person your replying to, you can highlight their email address & then select reply to all & their address should show up in the To: line. (That's how Eudora does it). If you use a different email program just cut & paste their email address. This would apply also if you want to send a private message to someone. Just replace the reply address with the one that you want to send to. Enough lecturing for now... I thought that I'd share some URL's that I've found most useful in my research. Obtaining NATF 80 Forms <http://www.outfitters.com/illinois/history/civil/natf.html> Public Records on the Web (there is a charge if you send for the records) <http://www.knowx.com/> American Revolutionary War Links <http://www.libertynet.org/iha/march/links.htm#gen> On SUNDAY only, let's post URL's that we've found useful! In your subject line, type "USEFUL LINKS" so that those of us that use filters can set them up. One more idea, then I'll shut up. What do y'all think of designating a day to posting "our most wanted surnames"? If enough of you want this, I'll set up one day a month or so to do this. Please reply to me privately. Have a great week & happy hunting! |||||| (o o) oOOo-(_)-oOOo ___|___|___|___|___| ___|___|___|___|___| Just popping over to say... Hello! Patti Caldwell Fasy <impattic@mediaone.net>

My problem is that I have references to,what appears to be, three different cemeteries for the same people. According to the copied pages, there is a BAKER (FIGLEY) CEMETERY in Center Twp, where my g-g-grandmother Kezia COLEMAN, is buried. A study done by the Tri-State Genealogical Society in 1981 shows her and her husband, Jonathan COLEMAN, buried on Moffet Hill Road near Raccoon Creek. I also have reference to a CRAIL CEMETERY on the Crail Farm & Center Church cemetery, where my g-g-grandfathers name is listed. ??
