    2. Patti Caldwell Fasy
    3. Hi y'all, Hope its been a successful "Rooting" week for y'all... It's been a real "hot" week down here in Southwest Florida! Thank goodness for the old a/c. For TODAY ONLY, lets post all of our "most wanted" surnames to all the lists. It doesn't matter where they came from. Please, please use the following format for posting: only ONE surname per message. List the name plus geographical location of the person in the subject line, ie: Subject: CALDWELL, ARMSTRONG CO, PA If we send our posts this way, folks who use filtering on their email programs will be able to filter out unwanted messages. If this format isn't followed, we won't be able to do this type of posting again. Last Sundays posting of useful URL's was a great success. I know that I bookmarked quite a few web pages from this. Thanks to everyone. You folks on my lists are the most gracious bunch of people on any of the lists that I belong to.. You really make my job enjoyable so give yourselves a big pat on the back! I won't be sending a message for the next few Sundays as I'll be in Nashville for 15 days of country music. Next Sunday, I'll be attending the City of Hope Celebrity Softball Game; on Monday the TNN County Awards Show; Brook & Dunn Fan Club Party on Wed; & Clint Black, Faith Hill & Tim McGraw's fan club parties. Besides all this, a full week of concerts at Fan Fair. Whew, what makes you think that I love country?<g>. The lookups that I've been doing will have to be suspended til I get back. Can you believe that my husband refuses to pack all my reference books, along with the 2 cats, and my 6 suitcases :). Men just don't understand! I'll resume all lookups when I return. I will have my laptop with me so if any questions or problems arise, I'll get back with you within 24 hours. Have a great week & make lots of connections... I know that I will! |||||| (o o) oOOo-(_)-oOOo ___|___|___|___|___| ___|___|___|___|___| Just popping over to say... Hello! Patti Caldwell Fasy <impattic@mediaone.net>

    1. Re: [PABEAVER-L] Beaver Co. research
    2. i would go to 2 places: --the Beaver County courthouse. go back to the Register of Wills office. they have a book that lists all the early wills of the county. this will give you the will book number and page number, if your ancestor left a will. all the early will books are on microfilm, the ladies there will get the roll you need out of the drawer, and put it in the film viewer for you. you can make copies off the microfilm for 50 cents a page. this is also the office where the deaths, from 1893-1906, *I think*, are registered, in big old books, also the marriage registers are in this office. also stop in the Recorder of Deeds office. any land bought or sold in the county, from 1800 to yesterday, is registered in this office. look in the Grantor (seller) and Grantee (buyer) indexes, there is a book for transactions from 1800-1880. this will tell you which book volume # and page # to look for. There is often a surprising amount of family information contained in a deed. all the deed books are available in the actual book form, as well as on microfilm rolls, whichever you prefer to look at. --then go to the Beaver County Center for Historical Research. this is located in Beaver Falls, upstairs in the Carnegie library. they have *everything* (and i am not exaggerating too much). they have warrantee maps, county histories, farm directories, newspapers on microfilm, cemetery listings, censuses, landowner maps, tax lists, a surname file to find others working on your surname, old school yearbooks, obituary files. and, most important, the people who work here know where everything is. in fact, they seem to know everything about Beaver County, period. so just ask! good luck, JoAnn.

    1. [PABEAVER-L] Tax Lists, a bit of 1837 Hopewell Twp.
    2. if anyone remembers a few months ago, i was hunting for the tax lists for the early years of the county. well, i found them. wouldn't you know it, they are at the Beaver Center for Historical research (those people have everything ;) don't they?). what they have is not the original lists, but very very good copies, of every township, for the years 1800-1840. these are fun to look at if you are a nebby person, as most of us genealogists are, and you wonder just what your ancestor owned, and what his neighbors owned. if anyone knows what they mean by "OCCUPATION", please tell me, i can't decide if they mean what the perosn does for a living (if that's it, why not just say 'farmer' or 'miller' or whatever it is) or if they mean a dwelling place, like their house. Here is an excerpt, taken from the Hopewell Township List of 1937: [note: there's a monetary value next to each item listed, i just didn't feel like typing it] --McCague, John 6 a land, 1 horse, 1 cow, occupation --Morris, Uriah 193 a land, 2 horses, 2 cows, occupation --Miller, Hugh 400 a land, 3 horses, 3 cows, occuaption --Miller, Samuel occupation --McMillan, Charles 102 a land, 2 horses, saw mill, 2 cows, occupation --McElheny, William 200 a land, 40 do, 100 do, 3 horses, 3 cows, occuaption, new building --Oliver, William 1 house and lot, 1 cow, ?trade --Obney, William 108 a land, 2 horses, 1 cow --Oliver, Robert 2 a land, 1 cow, occupation --Prentice, James 50 a land, 1 horse, 1 cow --Prentice, William 1 horse, 1 cow, occupation --Prentice, Alexander 84 a land, 2 horses, 1 cow, occupation
