    1. [PABEAVER-L] John Bell-140th PA
    2. Pamela Payne Randolph
    3. Phil, In checking around: I found this: John S. Bell 140th PA Regiment Company "F" Enlisted 8/21/62 as Private Was killed 7/2/63 at Gettysburg, PA This is only a possible lead for you!! What makes a a very probable hit is that Colonel Richard Roberts was in this unit. Colonel Richard P. Roberts of the 140th. PA Killed at Gettysburg July 2nd. 1863 These are the words composed by Samuel P. Bate in the History of Greene County, Pennsylvania the 1888 edition. pp.404 ChapterXXIX. (slightly edited for clarity. M.R.V.) Company A, of the One Hundredth and Fortieth Regiment, was recruited in Greene county and was originally officered by: Captain John F. McCullough, First Lieutenant J. Jackson Purman and Second Lieutenant David Taylor . The regiment was organized at Camp Curtin on the 8th of September 1862, with Colonel Richard P. Roberts of Beaver County, Lieutenant-Colonel John Frazer of Washington County and Major Thomas B. Rodgers of Mercer County. The command of his brigade then fell upon Colonel Roberts of the 140th. Gallantly did these two small brigades push forward over this devoted ground on the face of a severe fire. The enemy was swept back from the cover of the woods, and the rocky ridge beyond the Wheat Field, a position of great natural strength, was carried. But this advantage, gained at a fearful cost, was of no avail. The angle in Sickle's line at the Peach Orchard, the weak point in his formation, had been hopelessly broken, and through this opening the enemy swarmed and turned the right of Caldwell's position, compelling him to withdraw. He rested at night on the low ground on the left center of the line, where he remained during the heavy cannonade of the succeeding day, and until the close of the battle. The loss in Company A in the battle was severe. Sergeant Brown and Corporal Eddy were killed, Private Loar was mortally wounded, Lieutenant Purman was wounded with the loss of a leg, Captain McCullough, Sergeant Zimmers and Private Eddy were severely wounded, Colonel Roberts, Captain Acheson and Lieutenant Wilson of the regiment were killed. You might want to chek out his site also: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/4168/history.html http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/4168/ Glad to help!! Pamela Randolph

    1. [PABEAVER-L] Civil War unit rosters
    2. phil holm
    3. Hi, I am looking for rosters of units (regiment perhaps) from Beaver County. In particular the roster that would include Col. Robert's unit at the Gettysburg. It is my belief that these brothers were in Col. Robert's regiment. They fought at Gettysburg, one brother John Sutherland Bell was killed and the other George Allison Bell was captured, interned at a POW camp until the end of the war and died in Feb 1866. Both served in Pennsylvania Infantry regiments (and both are on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg). Does anyone have access to those rosters and be willing to look for that information for me? OR Would someone direct me to where I could find this information? Thank you. Phil Holm

    1. [PABEAVER-L] Lowry/McFarland/Cochoran/Hollingbery
    2. I have the following Lowrys buried in Beaver Cemetery, and I am looking for more information about them. Joseph F. Lowry 1849-1919 GAR marker #1510 [also known as J. Frazier Lowry] Jennie L. (or C.) 1866-1947 [wife of Joseph Frazier, maiden name was McFarland] Frank 1887-1889 [son] Carl 1891-1891 [son] Elsie B. Hollingbery 1889-1947 [daughter] Joseph was the son of William B. Lowry and Sarah Cochoran. He served with the 101st PA Vol Inf during the Civil War, and remained in PA after his father moved to Youngstown, OH with his step-mother, Cassandra Hennon Bowers. Eventually, Joseph Frazier also moved to Youngstown, OH. He died there in 1919 and his body was shipped back to Beaver Cemetery. Is anyone familiar with the families of LOWRY, McFARLAND, COCHORAN, and HOLLINGBERY in the Beaver County area? Susan Mann

    2. My gg-grandfather was Benjamin H. GODDARD (born 1830 IN PA - died circa 1908 in Washington Co., OH). His parents were possibly Joseph GODDARD (b. 13 Nov 1795 in PA - d. 5 May 1885 in Washington Co., OH) and Susannah HACKATHORN (b. 1800 in PA - d. 14 Mar 1883 in Washington Co., OH). There is the possibility that Benjamin and his parents were all born in Beaver Co., PA and that they moved to Washington Co., OH in the 1830s or 1840s. Another Hackathorn/Heckathorn researcher who contacted me was descended from George Adam Heckathorn, Jr. and Anna Martha Beegle from Beaver Co., PA. He thought that my Susannah could have been the daughter of George and Anna. That is all of the Hackathorn/Heckathorn info that I have. Sondra
