    3. This is my first time posting to this site, however I have been researching my families in Beaver County for about 8 years. My Grandmother Laura HUNTER TRIMBLE Murphy was born there on 04 July 1889 in New Brighton to John Jackson HUNTER and Susannah BROWN. She had an early marriage to Robert TRIMBLE and had a son of that same name. I have been seeking him with no luck. He was born in 1907. John HUNTER's parents were Samuel HUNTER and Elizabeth WINES. They were born in Beaver/Allegheny Countys, moved to some unknown place in Indiana from about 1840 to 1850. They then returned to Beaver and lived out their lives there in New Brighton. I do not know either of their parents. Susannah's parents were Samuel BROWN and Sarah BAKER who were also born in Beaver county, and married there. The only thing I know of her parents is that Samuel's father was named John Brown, and Sarah's mother's maiden name was MCLEAN. Samuel and SARAH moved to some unknown place in OHIO from about 1845 to 1850. Of course, to complicated things for their Great Granddaughter, (ME), they had to be born in the states where they lived such a short time. John was born in 1850 in Indiana, and Susannah was born in 1848 in Ohio. I have had no luck finding information about that period in their lives. John died in 1926 and Susannah died in 1918. Both are buried in Grove Cemetery in New Brighton, PA. I am hopeful that somebody out there knows of these folks, and can help me out. I have found that the places that i've written to over the past 8 years within Beaver County, have been very helpful. Thank you. Nancy Baldwin from Minnesota

    1. Re: [PABEAVER-L] Naturalization and Social Security
    2. Dear Joyce, You may have to go to Pittsburgh to find the naturalization papers. I have been trying to find my gggrandfather's papers, and the Beaver County courthouse said that they didn't have the staff to search. I lucked out and an aunt had the original papers, but they were in terrible shape. We could read the date, though and I have a copy of his "papers" from Allegheny Co. They aren't very legible and I didn't get any new info from them. I haven't been able to find the letter of intent, which is what I really want. It usually has the date and port of entry on it. The Declaration of Intent was sometimes called "First Papers". Good luck. Cathy

    1. [PABEAVER-L] Naturalization and Social Security
    2. To any one out there who can help, I have a question concerning Naturalization and Social Security. Does someone have to be a citizen of the US in order to receive Social Security? My great grandfather came to the US in the 1890s from ????. On the 1920 census he states he is from Germany, the 1900 and 1910 from Austria. Since he is one of my elusive ancestors, I would like to track him down as to exactly from whence he came. I know he applied for Social Security in 1936. If you must be a citizen in order to receive SS, then he must have declared his intentions to become a citizen after 1920 but before 1936. If all of this is so, then all I have to do is search for his citizenship papers between 1920 and 1936. Thanks in advance, Joyce in MI

    2. Jean, Have you written to County Hist or Gen society? I wrote to Potter Co. Hist Soc for an address to write to for census info and ended up with a manila envelope full of info on the person I was hunting for. Worth a shot, especially in the counties with smaller popoulations. Probably wouldn't work in Allegheny Co. or the Philly area. Good luck.

    1. [PABEAVER-L] NARA
    2. On the lists I belong to, I have noticed several messages regarding NARA and the possible change in preservation of materials. In my most recent issue (September/October, 1998) of the National Geographic Traveler, I noticed an article titled "A Real Census of Family." The article discusses the availability of census and other records at NARA and gives the Washington, DC address, phone number and internet address. A little damage control, maybe.
