Carol, I had a relative named Naomi Godsleben, widow of Wm. Godsleben, who lived in Smith's Ferry in 1900. Ted
The ferry has been there for many, many years. But that is an interesting question. Will hit the books! Think it was originally named Dawson's ferry. My grandfather ran the ferry between Georgetown and Smith's Ferry for many years. Yes, I am interested in any of the families of Smith's Ferry and Georgetown, also Glasgow. Carol/Pa
Hi folks, I am sending this out in hopes of possibly finding someone else who is researching the name SMITH, but knows that it was not the original name. In my case, I have a Charles SMITH who was born in Sweden. From what I've been told, the name was originally Christiansson (or any variation thereof). I was also told that his entire family immigrated and assumed the SMITH name, but I have absolutely no information on any siblings or parents. Since I do know that Charles immigrated in 1869 at about the age of 15, (his Declaration of Intention to naturalize was dated 1876, and lists his age at that time as 21), I really can't say for sure if his entire family immigrated then or not. Anyway, what I do know of this fellow is that in Feb. 1875, he married Agness Jane DIXON in Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny Co., listing his residence as McKeesport, and hers as Lovedale. In Oct. 1876, he filed his DI in Clay Co. IN. By Oct. 1881, when his daughter, my ggrandmother was born, they were in PA, but the exact location is in dispute. One document states McKeesport, while others state DuBois. Yet another document indicates that he may have been in Clay Co. IN as early as April 1874, which is listed as the date of birth of a child born to Charles and Agness on the child's baptism certificate, which was dated Feb. 1878. The actual year of birth is in question, though, because it looks as though the person filling in the blanks on the certificate originally wrote 1878 as the year of birth, but then wrote over it to correct it. As closely as I can tell, 1874 is the corrected date. The only thing I know for sure is it couldn't have been 1878, since the birth occurred in April, but the baptism was performed in February. The child named on this baptism certificate was George SMITH. From what I had been told, this couple had 3 children; my ggrandmother, Mary Ann (Daisy), b. Oct. 1881, Henry and Violet. I'm not sure where George fits in. Perhaps he died as a young child, or he could be the one everyone knew as Henry, either going by his middle name or a nickname. Agness apparently died in Clearfield Co. in 1899. Charles was killed in a mining accident within the next year or two. His son, Henry was also involved in this accident, and was left permanently disfigured. I'm not sure where this accident occurred, but Charles was reportedly living in Yatesboro, Armstrong Co. at the time. I am also looking into the possibility that either Charles or his wife Agness had a sister named Tillie, who married "Jess" WINDERS. Do these circumstances ring any bells with anyone? Please? :) Irene Crawford JTJTJ5@aol.com
Why is it called Smith's Ferry? Is someone interested in the Smith Family? How old is the ferry?
Hi, Smith's Ferry is just East of the OH/PA border. Take the 1st right after you cross the border going into PA from OH and go under the railroad bridge. You will immediately be in Smith's Ferry although there isn't much left there now. The streets are still there and a few homes. It is right on the North side of the Ohio river and has flooded many times from the info I got when looking for where my GrGrandfather Harvey Wallace lived. Bob Wallace

Hi Elva Smith's Ferry is an area I am researching too. I did not find a Truman Smith in a quick scan. What years are you looking at? Are there other surnames. Smith's Ferry is all but gone now due to the locks and dams on the Ohio River. This town was situated low on the river bank. My grandfather ran the ferry boat between Georgetown and Smith's Ferry for many, many years until the bridge was built upriver at Shippingport. Carol/Pa
Joann I looked in "Pennsylvania Line" and couldn't find it. This book lists all this information and is a great reference aid. It even has towns that aren't there anymore. Are you sure of the spelling? Carol/Pa
Is the Beaver Valley Transit Co. still alive? If not where would one go to get info on a former employee's records? Thank you Sharon Tx

Sharon, Try the query section of the Beaver County web page. Someone should know the answer for you or steer you in the right direction. my g-grandfather worked for a Beaver Falls Street Railway as the superintendent. This was from 1885 to 1887. All of this material is in the History of Beaver Co.,published in 1888 by Warner & Co. in Philadelphia. Good Luck, Jean
Where is Smith's Ferry? I recently asked that same question and received the answer from kind subscriber's to this list. It is located on the Ohio River on route PA-68 in Beaver County. Ted
I found a reference to an Obney Run, which was listed as a watercourse in Beaver Co. in The American Gazetteer, Abridged. Boston: Thomas and Andrews, 1798. Any ideas where it might be? thanks for any help, JoAnn.
You must mean Ohio Township, 'cause "west of the Ohio line" wouldn't even be in Pennsylvania anymore, would it? Marcia ---------- From: Craig S. Hi Anthony Coyan, I spent a lot of trouble finding who to contact about a member of the Masonic Order. They were polite in responding, but said they do not keep any Genealogical info on members and did not respond with the requested address for my GrGrandfather. Good luck. Bob
Hello, I'm new to the Beaver County list. I'm looking for information on the families of Nye, Piersol, Graff, Gerwig, Hartzel, Stilly and Lesnett. Michael Nye, b. 1785, m. M. Ann Piersol. Sampson S. Nye, b. 1810, m. Ruth Piersol. Michael Nye, b. 1836, m. Harriet Hartel. Victor P. Nye, b. 1886, m. Mary Graff. PIERSOL Sampson Piersol, b. 1764, m. I'm also very willing to share the information I have. Brian Bowers ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
