The following is a partial extraction from the biographical sketch about Samuel Curtis on page 637 of Warner's 1888 History of Beaver County. My main interest is in the McCurdy line. Any help with that line would be greatly appreciated. Samuel Curtis, P.O. Beaver, member of the firm of Curtis and Bliss, editors and publishers of the Rochester Daily Argus and Radical. He was born 21 Dec. 1834 Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY to John and Elsie (Jones) Curtis. Samuel Curtis married 1 March 1865 Isidore, daughter of Capt. Richard and Elizabeth (McCurdy) Calhoun [Calhoon]. Five children born to Samuel and Isidore (Calhoun) Curtis, the three now (1888) living: John Richard, Dora E., and Elizabeth M. Phil Holm
The following is a biographical sketch. It has been proofread (I suppose there still is a possibility of error). My interest is in the McCurdy line. Particular interest is in William McCurdy and another daughter Mary Ann married to Daniel Thurston also of Beaver County, PA. Any help or information would be appreciated. His paternal grandfather was Nathaniel Kerr, of Scotch-Irish descent, a soldier of the war of 1812 and a pioneer farmer of this county; he reared a family of three children: Thomas G., Mary A. (Mrs. Thomas Crooks), and Nathaniel P. Of these Thomas G., a blacksmith by trade, lived and died in this county. He had three children who grew to maturity: William W., Rev. Nathaniel P. and Mary (Mrs. George McCaskey). The maternal grandfather of our subject was William McCurdy, a pioneer of Brighton township, this county. William W. was reared and educated in Freedom, where he learned the trade of ship carpenter, which he followed from 1849 until 1877. Since then he has been a bookkeeper. He located in 1886 in Beaver Falls, where he has since resided. In 1856 he married Nancy J., daughter of Thomas and Abigail Devenney, of New Brighton, this county, and by her has four children: Thomas C., Olive S., Mary M. and Myra E. Hello, I had a HUGE breakthrough on the Nye family of Beaver County today. Most of the Nyes in Beaver County descend from Andrew Nye. Andrew was the son of an Andreas Neu who lived around the Forks of the Delaware about 1750. We may now know the German town that Andreas Neu emigrated from. I found the information in "The Dansbury Diaries, Moravian Travel Diaries, 1748-1755," translated by William N. Schwarze and Ralf Ridgway hillman. Picton Press, Camden, Maine, 1994. The diary of Sven Roseen - which covers his missionary travels around what is now Monroe County, Pa., from 1748 and 1749 - mentions several encounters with Andreas Neu, who was married to Sara Rose and lived at the Delware Water Gap. Luar Kuykendall (our Selli/Sara Rose Neus future husband) is also mentioned. In these accounts, Roseen mentions that Andreas came from the area around Speyer, Mannheim and Worms. Later, he mentions that he came from the town of "Leustadt," which was "three English miles" from the town of "Fraensheim." After checking my German atlas, I couldnt find a Fraensheim or a Leustadt anywhere, let alone in the area that Roseen mentioned. However, I did find a Freinsheim that was about three miles from Leistadt, both were in the area indicated by Roseen. These are probably the towns we should be interested in. The spellings are phonetically similar (at least they are in German, if not in English) and the geography matches up very well. Leistadt is a suburb of Bad Duerkheim, which is on the German Wine Road just west of the Rhein River. Bad Duerkheim is famous for a "drink-yourself-sick-fest." They serve mediocre wine in liter-size mugs. I plan to find a LDS family history center near here and try to request the German church records. (I havent been to a family history center since I moved to this area so Ill need to locate one first.) I wish I had access to this book before I left Germany last summer. The diary entries offer a lot of information thats new to me. -- Andreas Neu had lived in Leustadt, Germany. The town was three English miles from Fraenstadt and both were near Speyer, Worms and Mannheim. -- Andreas and Sara had a daughter named Sara, who was born June 14, 1748. She was the couples first child. -- Sara Roos/Rose and Andreas had both been previously married. (This could have been assumed to be the case for Andreas if we accepted that our Andreas was the same man who immigrated through Philadelphia in 1733. I accept this but would still like to see some concrete proof, which might turn up in German records.) -- Saras father was High German and her mother was Scottish. -- Andreas had daughters named Catharina and Elizabeth from his previous marriage. This is based on the fact that Roseen lists their last name as Neu. -- Andreas lived "on the south side of the Blue Mountains, along the Delaware," in what is now Monroe County, Pa. -- Andreas had an occupation that required trips to Bethlehem to get leather. Bethlehem was the center of Moravian activity and he met other Moravians there. There is one item that is remarkable because of its absence: a son named Samuel. Family tradition says that the Samuel Nye who appears in early records from western Pennsylvania was the half-brother of Andrew Nye. Since daughters from Andreas previous marriage were mentioned, one would think that Samuel also should have been mentioned. Perhaps he was with his brother Michael, who lived near Easton. If anyone would like a transcript of the passages that deal with Andreas, or other information about the Nyes, just drop me a note. Hi again, I've sent a note to the Beaver County Genealogy Society to enquire where this book might be purchased, if it is still available. I have also enquired about copyright issues. If it is permissible, I would be happy to post snippets to the list. The book has no index, but is broken down by year and each year alphabetized by surname. Perhaps a year at a time could be posted. Keep your fingers crossed! Janet
To all of you who have requested look-ups, I will send the information to your email be it negative or a find. I bought this book off of a used book table at our local genealogical society. It says nothing about who printed it, or where it might be available. The only thing across the top of the pages is: NATURALIZATION APPLICATIONS PROTHONOTARY DEPARTMENT, MICHAEL JACKSON, DIRECTOR I will see if I can find out where another copy might be obtained. If I am lucky in that information, I will post it to the list. Best Wishes, Janet Waite ICQ #2133926 http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~janroots/index.htm http://www.rootsweb.com Proud Rootsweb Donor

Dear Sondra, I don't mean to be a pest, but was going through some earlier e-mails and ran across yours. I may have forgotten or missed a subsequent response, or maybe I'm just impatient, but I wondered if you had a chance to check for my Lettitia Heckathorne. Regards, Hal Lieder
Janet, Don't do a special search, but if you come across any with the COTTAM surname, I'd appreciate hearing. I don't know when they came or even if they came to Beaver Co. first. Because I got the list mail at the office, I cannot repost the queries on Naturalization. I found nothing on DORRAM/DURAM, BETKE, NASKA/NESSKE/NESKE, HORSRMANN. I did find several KESLER/KESSLERS and will respond to that one is a separate post. The only information given is the name, country of origin, date of application and the term.
