Hi, This relates to my Gerwig ancestors and members of that family who lived in northern Beaver County and Zelienople in Butler County. I typed this in for someone on the Allegheny County list and figured I'd share it. Following is information that was sent to me by the Zelienople Historical Society. More on that in the next item.) - Beaver County Orphans Court Record Reel 4 On March 9, 1846, Magdalene Hawn, the widow of Jacob Garvick, late of North Sewickly Township, asked that Michael Hawn be appointed guardian of her four children who were under the age of 14. They were Sarah, Caroline, Henry and Dorothy. (Are Caroline and Dorothy the same ones mentioned in the 1850 Census? Perhaps. I haven't researched that yet.) Garwig shown as living in Franklin Township. The following comes from "A Genealogical and Biographical History of Allegheny County, Pa." by Dr. Thomas Cushing (1889). I'm not certain about Cushing's scholarship but I generally distrust the county histories that were published at that time. The biographical sketches often consist hearsay and foggy recollections from the subjects themselves. (But what the heck - it might hold a few hints.) NICHOLAS J.H. GERWIG, merchant, Wilkinsburg, was born in Ross township, this county, November 14, 1846. His parents, Henry and Mary (Voegtly) Gerwig, now reside in the city of Allegheny; the former was born in Alsace, Germany, in 1822, and the latter in Allegheny in 1826. Henry Gerwig came to this country in 1836, and established a rope-factory in Pittsburgh, which is now succeeded by Bently & Gerwig, of New Brighton, Beaver county, in which he is still interested. Nicholas J.H. Gerwig was reared in the city, attended the German Evangelical school three years and the public school four years. After a course at Penn Institute, he, in 1861, set about learning the trade of rope-making, at which he labored five years. He was then employed in his father's warehouse as bookkeeper and salesman, and Jan. 1, 1871, became a partner in the business. The firm is now H. Gerwig & Sons, dealing extensively in ropes and cordage; our subject is also interested in the New Brighton factory. He owns sixteen houses in Wilkinsburg, four in Pittsburgh and four in Mansfield. He attends the Presbyterian Church, and in politics is a republican. Jan. 8, 1874, he married Anna Mary, daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Hall) Beckert, natives of Alsace, now residing in Reserve townwship, where Mrs. Gerwig was born. Mr. and Mrs. Beckert were married Nov. 7, 1836. Mr. and Mrs. Gerwig's living children are Frederick H.N., Clara Mary, Alma, Theodore Charles and Lucy Anna; three died in infancy. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Is there a census for PA or Beaver County for the years 1865-90? I'm looking for McDonald's, Whisler's and Jackson's. Thanks. Terri
Hi all, I wrote to the Beaver County Research Center about getting an "electronic" copy of some of my family history but they haven't sent me any info on this. Does anyone know about this? I know it's available because another "cousin" said he'd gotten a copy. It's a family history written by Faye Oline on the SCOTT girls. How much does something like this cost. And how do I go about getting it? Thanks, Lynn unicrnhorn@aol.com

This is being posted to both Beaver and Butler County mail lists because it involves both. I am looking for information on the early life of my ggg-grandfather, JOHN CONRAD STAMM (1756-1838) and his two sons; DANIEL (1783-1843), and JOHN CONRAD, JR. (1785-1863). They settled on a farm near Camp Run in Franklin Twp., Beaver Co. in 1807 and remained in the area for the rest of their lives. The story of their lives before 1807 is a mystery...at least it was never passed down through my branch of the family. They were German, of course, but where were they born, who was the mother of the boys and what happened to her, and were there other family members? Those are just a few of the many questions that I have. I'm hoping that this request will put me in touch with someone, perhaps another descendant, who can give me some information or advice. This involves Butler Co., too, because many of John Conrad Stamm's grandchildren settled there. Thanks in advance for any assistance, Gordon A. MacInnis <gmac@vt.edu>
Does anyone have easy access to the 1860 census (or should I order one from LDS?) I'm looking for the family of LEANDER WHISLER, series M593, roll, 1303, page 295 in the Rochester twp of Beaver county, PA. Thank you. Terri Gordon, Redmond, WA
Hello Gordon, Here's all I have on the Stamms right now. I forwarded your message to another Stamm descendant. Although it might not be the reason in all cases, the "migration" might have been finding a beautiful place to live after a Sunday stroll. Do any of you folks researching McAllister have anything on a Leigh McALLISTER and his wife, Agnes? There is supposed to be some connection between them and my IRWIN line, but I haven't gotten far enough yet to figure it out. Their adopted son William Raymond "Ray" was my grandmother, Gertrude IRWIN's second husband. I have been told that, through the adoption, Ray and my grandmother were first cousins, but this has yet to be documented on my end. They had no children, but I have copies of his adoption papers and such, as well as further information on his life after he and my grandmother married. This marriage would have taken place sometime in the 50s I believe, because I recall celebrating their 25th anniversary in the mid-to-late 70s. Does anyone know anything about these folks? Sorry, but I don't have pertinent dates at hand right now, except that Ray was born abt. 1905. (Sorry for those of you who subscribe to several lists for the duplication of this message.) Hi All, Sorry this has taken so long - below are the results that I've found so far for the queries about information from the Naturalization Applications Index 1844-1900: WHISLER/WHISTLER - I found a variant WEIZLER, William Nation Germany Date 9 Sept. 1872 June Term August VOLK Nation Germany 15 July 1870 November Term George WILKINSON Nation England 9 October 1866 November Term John P. I received a note today from the Beaver County Genealogy Society. The book on Naturalization Applications is not available for sale. The good news is that these records are public records, and there is no reason they can not be posted for public use. I will start working with them as soon as I can and get them posted somewhere. The society suggested that I submit them to the Beaver County PAGenWeb Archives, as more people would have access to them. Does anyone know the connection to all of the movement between Beaver Valley and the Coumbiana and Mahoning Counties in Ohio? There is a lot in my family (Showalters and Armstrong). I would think that movement or migration would have been up and down the Ohio River. I am sure that the railroads may have had a part in it at one point in our history. Just wondering..Cathy

The name *should* be Smith Curtis *not* Samuel Curtis. I'm sorry for any problem caused by the mistake. Phil Holm The corrected partial extraction: The following is a partial extraction from the biographical sketch about Smith Curtis on page 637 of Warner's 1888 History of Beaver County. My main interest is in the McCurdy line. Any help with that line would be greatly appreciated. Smith Curtis, P.O. Beaver, member of the firm of Curtis and Bliss, editors and publishers of the Rochester Daily Argus and Radical. He was born 21 Dec. 1834 Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY to John and Elsie (Jones) Curtis. Smith Curtis married 1 March 1865 Isidore, daughter of Capt. Richard and Elizabeth (McCurdy) Calhoun [Calhoon]. Five children born to Smith and Isidore (Calhoun) Curtis, the three now (1888) living: John Richard, Dora E., and Elizabeth M.
