Among the photos that I mentioned in my last post are these that I recognizes as being from the Mercer, Beaver, Lawrence County area. I will gladly make copies if you connect with these persons. They are connected to my Morrow, McConahy, Book families. Nellie Means- looks to be about a year or so old Frederick McConnell under one year of age Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnston and daughter Nellie Ralph Shiver/Stiver/Sliver- (hard to read.) appears to be about 9 months or so old This are related to me: Sierra Nevada (Morrow) Book Margaret (McConahy) Morrow George Van Eman Morrow James Preston Book I have several class photos which I believe to be of the Lowellville Ohio school in the 1940's-50's. and several others which I believe would be the Moravia area school district ca. 1890-1900. No names. I can identify my father/uncles in Lowellville.
Fellow Researchers: I have just checked out the book "OLEY VALLEY HERITAGE, THE COLONIAL YEARS 1700-1775" by Philip E. Pendleton. Only to find out that it is of no use to me. The listing that I had was with out the dates and mine were all there later. If anyone would like me to look up for a surname just let me know. Nora
Hi all. I apologize ahead of time to those who will get more than one copy of this but thought it was important enough for all. I just attended the funeral of my 78 year old aunt. She was the self-appointed guardian of all family info and she guarded it well. I've been doing research for almost 20 years and she absolutely refused to let me have access to my grandmother's photos, etc. Yesterday, my father, who inherited from his sister, gave me access to this material. I found my grandfather's death certificate and the sermon read at his funeral, my grandmother's birth certificate, wedding certificate, death certificate, obituaries and family letters, church membership records, a history written in 1932 that confirms the royal line of one of my families and tells me that my Rodgers ancestor was the "tallest man in England in his day and had a huge head", school reports for my aunts and uncles (now deceased), I could go on and on. But what's important is this: I now have photos- hundreds of them from my gggrandmother, Margaret McConahy and gggrandfather, George Van Eman Morrow, down to my own son. So what's wrong? Many of then aren't labeled- some of them were hanging in a damp basement, some are falling apart, some glued to the album, etc . I have a photo of three teenagers that is just marked "Morrow". Now I think it is my grgrandmother and her siblings but ? Sadly the older family members are mostly gone and I don't know if they will ever be identified. So, I am begging all of you- share the photos, etc. now, sit down with the family members and mark them - get your own info in order so that 100 years from now, our descendants aren't lamenting the loss of family info. You can bet that within the next few weeks, all of my photos will be labeled. and copies of these photos made and shared with my cousins. Thanks for listening and I hope this saves at least one photo. Donna

I need assistance with a lookup on the 1910 census. I tried to find my great grandparents listed on the 1920 census but could not find any Charles and Mary Emma Majors in Beaver Co. who had a son named Paul Kenneth Majors, born Aug. 4,1905 ( My grandfather). Place of birth for all, we think , was Rochester, PA. Charles and Mary Emma had a few children, Lovata( not sure of the spelling) , Charles, Howard, Wilford, Hazel Majors-Chewning and Paul. Thanks for any assistance, Dana
Hi there Barbara, I had some McDonald ancestry from Beaver County (Mary McDonald, born abt 1833) but I don't know anything about her ancestry yet. It is possible two of those McDonalds in your photograph could be related. Would you mind making a copy for me? I will gladly reimburse you. thank you. If anyone has heard of a family name similar to Schiley (Shiley, Skyley, etc.) in/of Beaver County, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Jack said his mother was French. Those of you who know the Beaver County area, does that make sense? Also, he said he grew up on a large farm outside of Beaver Falls (in case that might bring anything to mind for anyone on the list). Gina

I'm looking for relatives of my husband's grandfather, who was from Beaver County, Pennsylvania. His name was John (Jack) King, 1892-1970. He might've changed his surname, his previous surname possibly being Schiley (or something that sounds like that). He said his parents' names were Frank and Catherine. He had a younger sister. He married my husband's grandmother, Mercedes Turner, in 1927 in Amarillo, Texas. They'd met in Denver, Colorado. He was divorced by 1927 & had had two children from a previous marriage, their names possibly being Frank & Catherine. His son is said to have died on the Bataan Death March during WWII. John King was in the Navy. He sailed in Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet and was a carpenter. I know this is not much, but if this sounds familiar to anyone, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I've combed the Beaver County census records but haven't found many Kings. He was said to have an accent, possibly Dutch. Thanks, Gina gmikel@jump.net

There are about 80 people in the picture and I can identify the following: Ila Cronin, Wilma and Howard Molsberry, Sue Piersol Marshall and her husband Robert James Marshall, MD, and Sue and Roberta Molsberry. This picture was taken in The East Liverpool, Ohio or Beaver Co, PA area. There is an elderly man next to Dr Marshall who has a bow tie and white beard. And on the other side of Mrs Marshall are two elderly ladies. My mother , Betsy Molsberry, is not in this picture, so it may have been taken during the summers when she was in college, 1933-35. Dr Marshall died before summer of 1936. Thanks. Barbara Prior Jameson Marksnana@juno.com Monument CO

> This all brings up a question I've asked before. One of my ancestors >- Sampson Peirsol - said he served "as a private soldier a volunteer in >March in the year 1781 under Captain Joseph Sipeney in a company of >Indian Spies" when he applied for a Revolutionary War pension. What was >an "Indian Spy" and what did one do? hi Brian, these guys were the Rangers. here's a bit from _Settler's Forts of Western PA_ by John A. DeMay ISBN 0-9660243-0-3, an excellent book that i think everyone interested in this area/time period should have: "Someone had to go looking for Indians prowling around the neighborhood. It didn't do to have a fort to run to but nobody to tell you when to run. This need brought about the creation of specialized Ranger untis who were on the government payroll and served for an extended period of time. They were formed into small units of highly skilled, audacious men and sent out to patrol extensively along the rivers and throughout the countryside, looking for signs of Indian war parties. They were also expected to go on spying missions to the Indian villages as far as 200 miles away. All of these men were born and reared on this frontier, grew up intimately acquainted with the rivers and forests, and knew every skill for survival in this harsh environment. They were expert shots with a rifle, could throw a tomahawk accurately, were physically strong and possessed extraordinary stamina. Finally, each man had a well-established reputation for courage and audacity. They were quite a crew." and here's a bit from _Pioneer Life_ by Wright and Corbett, ISBN 0-8229-6044-3: "The ranger was a kind of scout, a man who knew the tactics of Indian warfare. He was an army in one individual. He carried his artillery on his shoulder. In ordinary times-in times of quiet sowing or harvest, that is-he might be a farmer cultivating his own small clearing. But in times of sudden raid or when messages were to be sent to a distant settlement or fort, he was a voluntary soldier, serving in a company or individually, and to him fell the defense of the frontier." hope this helps. bye, JoAnn.
The British used men who had been captured by the indians and returned to Col Bouquet as spies and go betweens with the Indian communities. This happened with my ancestors the HICKS ( GRESHOM, LEVI, MOSES) who had been taken as boys from the Canoe Valley and lived with the Indians for 10 years. After they returned they continued to wear Indian clothing etc and were used by both the Army and the Church, never really totally trusted! Lyman Draper did a lot of interviews with Revolutionary Soldiers and their children, perhaps the information you are looking for is there. Available at most FHC. Unfortunately he never put it into Manuscript form and so there are just a series of Papers. The Brady and Weitzel series are very good (certainly they are heros of mine), during the period after the Revolution ( the Shawnee uprisings) But I do not remember reading a lot about organized Ranger Units in Western Pa during the Revolution, or afterwards when it was so dangerous on the Frontier, will try and interlibrary loan your suggestions. Thanks Was Samuel Piersol related to the Piersol family from Chester and Berks Counties who had a history of dealing with the Indians as Traders?..I have Piersols from there..happy to exchange. Ris
