Fellow Researchers Sorry about this but when I was answering a query about Oley Valley research a woman asked me if Philadelphia had a newsletter I accidentally deleted her address. Below you will find the URL to subscribe to the above mentioned newsletter. Thanks Nora PHILLY-ROOTS-L@roots.com
In the late 1860's Samuel Wallace Gould married Annie Morris and before his death in the 1870's he had 4 daughters. Hannah married a Reynolds, Sarah Emma married Adam Kaufman, Ollie married Ernest Stanyard and Mary Jane married William Stanyard. It is the 2 daughters that married the Stanyards for which I would like information. They resided in Beaver Co. Thank You Marilyn

Hi Bev, Hope you like the site. Cliff
Bev, The site has been extremely active the past few weeks. (It also takes about 1.5 minutes to download.) The site can also be accessed via the following: [ http://army.barracks.buffalonet.org/home.html ] or simply by going to [ http://www.buffalonet.org ] and check the list for Buffalo's 19th Century Army Barracks. As another resort, you can do a search for it using Excite Search Engine... among others. Please don't give up! You will like the web site. Thanks for writing. Best regards, Cliff
To All Whom It May Concern: This message is to inform all genealogists, researchers, historians, teachers and students, about a very important web site that has a searchable database of over 1, 650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers were from Pennsylvannia, and went on to fight in the Mexican War and the Civil War. The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, under his command and/or his responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by quantity. HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has made available, free of charge, the names of all officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see Barracks Notes) who lived at this federal military post located on the Niagara Frontier. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data for Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," as well as a wealth of information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com
Cliff, a misspelling of mine. Sorry. ):. It works fine
Cliff, The URL for this would not go through (http://www.buffalnet.org/army). Is there some problem with the site. It sounded very interesting. Bev

Hi Alice, You've convinced me to join, also. My check will be in the mail in the morning. Thank you for the information. Always looking for the Thomas Leonard family of Beaver Co. (1803-1870). Donna
Kelly Thanks. I don't know where we would be coming from. My husband has relatives in Calcutta, OH so it might be that direction, but then we used to live in Darlington and sometimes come down 551. The Finkbeiners may have been from Allegheny County, so I will check there. One daughter lived in Beaver County and her father could have come to live with her. Her name was Lillian and she married an Alexander Court. Joanne
I was just sent a copy of a page that says my great-grandfather Tobias Finkbeiner born July 15, 1849, died January 16, 1925 and was buried in New Salem Cemetery, Sunday 18, 1925. Minister Rev. Harold Hammond, Beaver, PA. Is there still a New Salem Church? Where is the cemetery? (I live in Mercer Co. so it would make a nice Sunday drive.) Another clipping was enclosed that had the written date- Age 62---May 31, 1912. It reads: "We report with sorrow the death of Mrs.. Tobias Finkbeiner, one of the older members of Calvary. Mrs.. Finkbeiner had been failing for sometime, but it was not thought that the end was near. On the afternoon of May 31 she passed away. The funeral services were held on the third of June and her body was laid at rest in Woodlawn cemetery by loving hands the same afternoon. We assure the members of her family of our sympathy in their bereavement." This is Tobias' wife. Are Calvary and Woodlawn in Beaver County or are they in Allegheny County? Joanne

Hello list members, Let me tell you a little bit about the Beaver County Genealogical Society and how it can help you with your research. First, we have a dedicated staff of volunteers who meet every Monday and answer the queries that come in the mail. This is done in a professional and well thought out manner and the volunteers are all amateur genealogists with a great deal of knowledge regarding Beaver County. If you join the society for $10.00 a year, (a bargain! ) you get the quarterly journal called Gleanings. Gleanings is not a newsletter advertising our next pot luck or antique sale! Gleanings consists of lists: deaths for a certain year, tax lists, orphans, marriages, histories of churches, cemetery records, etc. Twenty-eight pages each quarter. In addition, you can place a query in Gleanings once each quarter and reach over 200 people (most NOT on the internet) researching ancestors in Beaver County. If you join, another added benefit is that we do not charge the $5.00 fee for research (copies still run 20 cents each). Then there are the surname files. At least 10 file cabinets (4 drawers each) stuffed to the max with files containing correspondence that has come from other genealogist for over twenty five years. All are filed by surname being researched. If you send us your family group sheets, we put them in the surname file. Who knows, tomorrow a distant cousin might do the same thing! Newspaper clippings are also dropped in the surname files. There could be a wealth of information waiting for you--you just need to ask. We can't promise the answers to all your questions on your ancestors but we'll sure give it a try with all the resources that we have. As much as we would like it, not everything is available on the internet and we need to search other places for our roots. Yes, I'm a volunteer for BCGS and proud of it. It's a great resource that is often overlooked. Alice Kern
