    1. [PABEAVER-L] Dever in Beaver
    2. Whitmore, Ron
    3. Greetings, I am looking for information on the WHITMORE/DEVER/REED families from Beaver Co. PA. My G Grandfather, G. E. Whitmore Sr. (B. 1869 London), married a woman believed to be a Laura Emma DEVER from Homewood, PA. She was reportedly born in 1872, Married in 1892, died 1937. Their children were: Walter Dever Whitmore, b. 1894, Steubenville, OH Charles Franklin Whitmore, b. 1896, Steubenville, OH George Edward Whitmore, Jr., b. 1898, Dennison, OH Richard Roy Whitmore, b. 1907, Steubenville, OH Ralph Emerson Whitmore, b. 1910, Liverpool, TX I need Laura's correct name and her parents names. Her mother's maiden name may have been REED. There is an obscure reference to that name on a photograph I have. The photo is of a family re-union which took place in 1910 in Rock Ridge Park, Chester, WV. And is titled "DEVER/REED REUNION. Another possibility: Laura's maiden name may have been REED and her father's given name may have been DEVER. If any of this makes any sense to anyone, please contact me, Thank you.

Rooters, I just found out that the traffic director at the corner of Lenkner Street and Cyberspace Avenue has been into the cooking sherry and has not been delivering the mail correctly and promptly even from PAALLEGH unless Clare fired me. Honest Clare, I didn't make any kid jokes. If anyone sent me mail that I requested or that required an answer, please resend. I just checked with Stargate Tech and the problem is not in my mailbox. Watch out for that cooking sherry. Mac

    1. [PABEAVER-L] W. Sutherland CAMPBELL 1900 - 1971
    2. On my last trip to the Citizens Library, I found a book of Frankfort Springs Presbyterian Church tombstone inscriptions compiled by a Mrs. Emma Bryte Pollock in 1964. My gg-grandfather Samuel CAMPBELL (1831 - 1887) is listed as well as other members of his family. One of the sources for the information on Samuel was W. Sutherland Campbell. On that same trip, as I was walking through Mill Creek Hill Cemetery in Green Township looking for my Campbells, I came across a stone for a W. Sutherland Campbell 1900 - 1971. I've never run across his name before and can't connect it to my Campbell family at the present time, but I get the feeling he's trying to tell me something. Does anyone know anything about W. Sutherland Campbell? Any info will be appreciated. Diane

    2. dlarson
    3. If one of my ancestors came to the US prior to the Revolutionary War, would he have gone right to Pennsylvania area -- specifically Western PA? Seems to me that it wasn't settled yet except by Indians and the English/French armies. Am I correct in thinking along these lines? Or, did we really have Scottish or Irish people settling the area before 1776? Deanna dlarson@swift-net.com

    1. Re: [PABEAVER-L] Settling in PA
    2. There definitely were Scot-Irish in western PA way before the Rev. War. I have Scots ancestors in Wash Co and Fayette Co. There were many Scots frontiersmen in and around Washington [the town] These people were clannish and liked being on the frontier as far away from government as possible Regards Gene

Saturday, April 10, 1999, 10 a.m., Carnegie Lecture Hall. This informative day of how to best utilize the information from cemeteries, gravestones and other records resulting from death will be the last regular meeting of the fiscal year of the Western PA Genealogical Society. 10 a.m. Welcome and announcements 10:15 a.m. Documenting Cemeteries. Jeff and Diane Nesmeyer are members of the Prince William County Genealogical Society (Virginia) Cemetery Committee. Documenting cemeteries is a two-year old project for PWCGS. Many of the hundreds of cemeteries in Prince William County are small, family cemeteries that have all but disappeared in the encroaching forests when the land was abandoned, or were bulldozed to make way for the on-going development of this Washington Suburb. The Nesmeyers have assisted the co-chairs in locating many of these 'lost' cemeteries and documenting what has been found. The committee used the recommended forms for documentation from the Association of Gravestone Studies, a non-profit organization headquartered in Massachusetts. As the local project has progressed additional documentation techniques and forms have been developed for the types of cemeteries found in Prince William County. Diane and Jeff would like to share the forms, techniques, trial and errors, and experience in documenting cemeteries. The processes that they use can be adapted to many types of cemeteries found in rural and urban settings. They will also incorporate the use of videotaping, photography and digital imaging into their talk. 11:15 a.m. The Cemetery and Its Archives: A Genealogical Treasure. Marilyn Evert has worked at Homewood Cemetery for 10 years and is the assistant treasurer there. She began studies as a graduate student in Anthropology with examinations of material culture. From these studies she wrote the book "Discovering Pittsburgh Sculpture." She is a member of the Association of Gravestone Studies and a contributor to "The Homewood Chronicle," the biannual publication of the education arm of The Homewood Cemetery Historical Fund, a Charitable Trust. noon - Lunch break; brown bag lunch room with vending machines available 1 p.m. So You Belong to the Dead People's Society?: Genealogical Sources that Arise From an Ancestor's Demise. Many genealogists, beginner and experienced alike, do not take that extra step and go beyond the basic death record, tombstone, and will. This lecture concentrates on everything from a simple death certificate to mortality schedules, funeral home records, coroners inquests, land partitions, quit claim deeds, the exact contents of an estate packet, obituary sources, hair (not heir) books, inventory and vendue list analyzation, social security records, insurance forms, and more. Samples of each document type is shown and explained. Tom Neel is the office manager of the Ohio Genealogical Society in Mansfield, OH, where he has been a member since 1976. He has authored several books including the "Ohio County Courthouse Guide," and "The Ancestors and Descendants of Daniel White and Sarah Ford." 2 p.m. Messages From the Grave. Tombstones are the last monuments to our lives on this earth. They can speak of the lifestyle of the deceased or the attitude of death of the loved ones left behind. There are signs that show where abandoned cemeteries lie and ways to read "illegible" stones that may be the last time a person may hear the tombstone "speak." This slide lecture illustrates these techniques. Learn how the dead can still speak to us & how we can all preserve their memories.
