There was just a NOWRY in the Beaver County Times that passed away. I believe he worked for the Post Office and lived in Economy. Patty My mind not only wanders; sometimes it leaves completely! Do you know how the word influenza came into use? In the early turn of the 1900's the "flu" was very prevalent, and the medical profession did not know how to treat it effectively, so they said you were under the influence of this illness, hence the flu or influenza. Just thought I would add this little tidbit. Hi Alice, Thank you, I've looked through Gleanings back to spring 2000, (except summer 2000) and didn't find mention of the influenza. I am searching for Juliette NOWRY, nee NICHOLSON. She was wife of George NOWRY. I have her in the 1910 census, but she is gone by the 1920 census. Having talked with Juliette's sister's gr-granddaughter, I know that Juliette's sister, Sarah McGoric, and her niece and nephew, died of the Influenza in 1918. The possibility is that she went across the border to her sister's when they got sick, and she wont show up in Beaver Co. deaths. Thanks, Kathy

Kathy, 1918 was the worst year when thousands died of influenzia worldwide. . I have some Beaver records ending 1880 of cholera caused by the water, and typhoid epidemics as well. I have some names of victims of those illnesses prior to 1880. If that era is of interest send the names. Hi - I was wondering if anyone knew if there is are particular years, other than "the late teens" years, that the influenza hit the Beaver area. Or if there is any death index of those that succumbed to it. I know that the person I am searching died around this time, (or was abducted by space aliens...) and that some of her relatives did die from Influenza. I can't find anything about her. Anyone know? Kathy [email protected]
I can't put my finger on a site I had about the epidemics and natural disasters throughout history, but a wonderful and quick read all might enjoy for a general overview of history is "In the Wake of the Plague" by Norman F. Cantor. This was a fascinating book--the consquences of the plague were unbelievably far reaching, influencing art and culture in ways you would not think of. It was so good, I want to read it again. Does anyone have any cemetery records that record deaths and burials for : Lizzie May, born circa 1874, (sometimes called Lydia) Damon or Daman died after 1915 and/or her husband Herbert E., born circa 1864, Damon or Daman died after 1915 They are listed in the 1915 obit for her mother, Jane Kelly McCreary of New Castle, PA, as living in Rochester, PA. Also looking for general information on William and Esther Curtis and daughters, Norma (Zavak) and Carol (McCusker) of Rochester, PA circa 1968. This info was taken from an obit for Elsie Marie McCreary Waters Downs of Kalamazoo, MI. Elsie was a sister to my great grandfather, Joe McCreary of Hillsvile, PA. I have much family history to share. Shari McCreary Price
