    1. [PAARMSTR-L] Re: ELDER in PA
    2. First, please excuse the delay in answering the query and comments re Amanda Emma ELDER and her family. My computer has been in for repairs and update. Second, re the info which appears in the book "James ELDER, Sr...................., etc" I was the author of this genealogy; Lavon Mundinger, Ann Brooks and Shelba Davis were assistants and editors of this work. Each of us has spent approximately 40 years in genealogical research, and are well aware of the importance of documentation. The book itself was 5 years in the compiling. Third, In the front of the book under "Symbology" appeared the following statement: Superscripted numbers after an entry indicates the number of the source of information appearing in the back of the book. Please remember that a source is NOT always documentation. Much material on our families came from individual descendants and their personal family records. We believe them to be accurate, or will state in the source what degree of accuracy we deem them to be. However, many of the sources do reference documents which can be traced or copies made." Anyone who has been in genealogical research for any length of time and compiled records runs into this same problem. The intent is to place as much information as possible in the hands of other researches. It is impossible to document everything going into the compilation. The four of us did much research, contributed our findings, and because of the need for some sort of record on this family, asked for and received material from many descendants. Even wrong information sometimes leads us to the truth; any written genealogy should always be looked upon as a research tool, not a shortcut to our family history. We do now--as we did then--welcome any additions or corrections to this. Our original intent was to compile and send out a supplement with additions and corrections the following year. However, due to health problems beyond my control, I have been unable to do so. I still hope to do so, but am not placing any time limit. The information from Charles Starr was first sent to Ann Brooks, a renowned researcher in the ELDER family, even though she is not a descendant of our James ELDER, Sr. As I recall at that time Mr Starr indicated that the information he had gathered was not complete, and he had not yet documented it. There was not intent to pass this on as truth. I do appreciate the information sent to this newsletter regarding Amanda Emma, and will as soon as I can do more research on this myself.
