Hi! I have been working on researching my mother's father's line: McKee. They originally came to Pennsylvania as a couple James McKee and his wife, Sarah Bell, with their five young sons, Joseph, John, Hugh, Thomas and James in about 1770 from County Tyrone, (No.) Ireland. My line goes through Joseph (1758-1851), William (1807-1898), Thomas Jefferson (1843-1910), Charles Colton (1867-1953). The family apparently arrived in Armstrong County about 1800. My grandfather, Charles, was born in Girard, Ohio where Thomas had settled after the Civil War. The family seems to have drifted around western Pennsylvania, but were settled in Pittsburgh in 1910 when Thomas died and Charles took his family with him to California. I live in California, am a retired English teacher, have been married 40 years, and have two grand children. My hobbies are gardening, genealogy, calligraphy, travel, and reading. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who is researching the same family, who might have photos--I have a very few--or copies of documents. I think I am most eager to be able to get obituaries and other newspaper articles that would help me to know these people better. At one time they were prominent in the development of Armstrong Co. Joseph gave the land for a Church of the Brethren church and cemetery and is buried there. His son, William gave land to the Methodist Church for a church and cemetery and is buried there. They owned extensive acreage and saw mills early in the 19th Century. If anyone can help me with information, I would be appreciate it very much. I will share what I have, but much is based on secondary sources or family memories and notes. Sincerely, Annie
To Ann Appleton I am interested in the information you have on James McKee and Sarah Bell. I have information about that family, because I have been researching the other Joseph McKee who was in Armstrong Co. at the same time. It appears and I have pretty well proven that the Joseph McKee in the Armstrong Co. History is your Joseph, and is not a son of Andrew McKee as indicated in the County History. Have you seen a copy of that county History? An abstract of part of Joseph's will is shown in which his children are named. Your information shows Joseph with a son named William, which I do not see shown on that will. However, you may have more information. The Will shows his wife as Jane (Young, but her surname is not shown), with children, Thomas, Sarah (Davis),Ann (Rasher) Joseph McKee, Margaret (Kelly), and Martha (Hart). My Joseph who was a son of Andrew McKee left Armstrong Co. after 1810, and appeared in Brown Co., OH in the 1820 census. He lived next door to his sister Nancy who married James Hannah, and Joseph was the administrator of James Hannah's extate when he died. Other proof of his relationship to Andrew who married Mary Bamford is that Joseph named a son Andrew Bamford McKee. Joseph had a daughter Elizabeth Eaton McKee (my ancestor). She married Thomas Hunter in Brown Co., OH, and in 1857, he left the county where he was a County Commissioner. He next appears in Hancock Co., IL.in 1860 census. Elizabeth Eaton's Uncle (brother of Joseph named James McKee) also appears there in the 1860 census. So, Elizabeth's father Joseph had died, and she and her husband went with her Uncle James to Illinois. I was able to connect this, because Thomas Hunter's daughter Ann who was my grandmother was born in Macon Co., IL, where I was also able to trace them after they left Hancock Co., IL. I hope this makes sense to you. I have been able to find a relationship of Joseph who married Jane Young to Andrew and his family. We believe but have not yet proven that William b. 1696 was the father of Andrew. If that is so, then James Mackey was an Uncle of William. Their common ancestor was John McKie and Esther Hawthorn. I would love to exchange information with you to see if our information agrees. Thank you.
