Listers, In cleaning out my mom's attic I found a box of saved papers for my brother. Neither of us live in PA anymore although we both graduated from Redbank Valley High School. There was one item that is a puzzle as to why my brother had it. However, it would be a great little surprise for the owner. It is a Vocational Agriculture Project Record Book compiled by Bill Smith, RD#4, New Bethlehem, Clarion County, PA, Redbank Valley High School, age 15, sophomore, started in Jan., 1955. His father (Carl W. Smith) had to give written permission for Bill to use a portion of the farm acreage (4 acres) to plant oats as a high school project. The booklet is filled in well with all his notes and comments about his oats crop, lists of livestock, how total acreage (70) was planted, and machinery and buildings listed. Bill lists there are two houses which may help someone to identify the farm. I am guessing by the RD#4 address the farm was perhaps located in the Beautiful Lookout, Mudlic, McWilliams area which are all in Armstrong County. I would prefer to locate Bill or a member of his immediate family, but if that isn't successful, I will send the booklet to the first responder who has a secondary tie to this family. Hope to get this neat little keepsake back where it belongs. Joyce
In the 1850 Census for Armstrong County, my greatgrandfather was listed as a "Cole" Miner. Bill
Tom: Very likely it is "Ore Miner" many of my Anthony line were listed under that profession. I am transcribing Pennsylvania 1860 Clarion County and on page 4 of Farmington Township in the occupation line there are several large W's. I've done several previous townships for the same enumerator and have never seen this indicated. Does anyone know what the W means? Thanks for any help. Kim
Hi Tom, I took a look. That census taker's writing is a bugger. I saw several entries for Coal Miner. There are listings that do look like they start with On but the second word looks like miner to me, as with the coal miner entries. I'm thinking the On Monies, is something miner. Perhaps Ore? Not sure, but miner is my guess for occupation. Michal "Reason is our soul's left hand, Faith her right, by these we reach divinity." John Donne
I'm looking at the 1870 census for Madison Township, and I'm trying to make out the trade or status of my subject, Thomas Polliard. Tom
Thank you! My family names, except for one possibility, aren't listed but maybe when the include Gilpin Township I'll have better luck. I'll keep checking. If anyone has the 1820 Armstrong Co. PA Census, I am trying to find the ages of people living with the 2 following families. John Bruner was living in Toby Township Jacob Bruner was living in Redbank Township I know in the 1830 census John is found in Perry Twp., Armstrong Co. PA but I can't find Jacob. & I can't find either one in the 1810 census even though I know John had a son born before 1810 in Armstrong Co. PA. Thanks for any help, Gloria Weiss
Thanks Tom. It sounds like I had better get there on my next trip to PA. This is the Mount Herman Cemetery sometimes called the Black Church Cemetery (the old church wood siding had turned black - the church has been gone for years). My wife's great-grandfather is buried there, Joseph Sharp LLOYD (he isn't in the cemetery listing - he has no headstone) and we have been their a few times. They strip mined around the cemetery and changed the ground water table and some of the cemetery is very wet. It is about 4 miles from Manorville on Garretts Run Road. Does anybody know where this cemetery is located? JOHN ADAM HEILMAN and wife ELIZA are buried there according to PA_ROOTS cemetery database. They state it is in Kittanning twp. It is listed as BLACK/HERMAN cemetery on Armstrong page, in Manor twp. Which makes more sense because this is where I find census info. I checked Treasures of the Past but it isn't listed. Thanks Georgia Hileman Halloran
