    1. REMALEY School ca. 1860-1900
    2. Ron McCausland
    3. My g-gf Absalom B. Remaley, b.1837, was known to be a teacher and in his obit, d.1929, it says that he served in the profession for nearly 50 years. In a newspaper article regarding his daughter's marriage he is refered to as Prof. A.B. Remaley. Does anyone know if he ran a private school or how I might find information on public school teachers in the late 1800's? He lived in the area of Cochran's Mills - Girty, Burrell Twp., Armstrong Co. Thanks. Ron McCausland.......mailto:mcc533@scsn.net

    1. Erie County Obituaries
    2. JTJTJ5
    3. Hi fellow rooters, The following is a listing of this week's obituaries from the Erie, PA newspaper. I am posting them to several lists in the event that one of these folks might be a name someone is looking for. If someone does find a name in which they are interested, e-mail me *privately* (my e-mail address follows my signature), and I can send further details. These obituaries are usually pretty detailed, including parents' names, and former places of residence in some cases. I will list them below including the person's name, date/location of birth, and date/location of death. In the case of a woman, the name will be LAST, (MAIDEN), first, middle. I am going to include the date of the newspaper in which the obit appeared in the beginning of the listing of each day's obits. Please reference this date if you write for more information. I will attempt to alphabetize these, based on when they appeared in the paper, but can't make any promises. I am not going to attempt to put these in columns, because I know that when they come through, they are not always lined up properly. Here goes: SUNDAY, DEC. 28, 1997 (date of newspaper) CRISMAN, (PRIGENT), Charlotte Louise, b. Feb 14, 1957/Warren, PA, d. Dec 25, 1997/Philadelphia, PA DONNELLY, (POLK), Jeannette R., b. 3. Martha, I was at the Survey yesterday and got the book references plus their indexes of names on Pennnsylvania OIL FIELD events. One book published by the firm who issued the 'Derrick" lists daily events in the oil industry from 1859 to 1898 and then indexes the people noted as dying in a Mortuary Index. I copied this index plus the biograpghy indexes of the other books. My family name, the Greens, comes up rarely so either they were lower level workers or just didn't "make any news" which is to say the idexes have some relation to "stature" . Most of the iron industry references in the USGS library I've seen to date are not overly informative and say pretty much what the published material already says, but then again there are always little gems to be found. On the company ledgers you mention here is related idea. We should all be on the look out for "railroad station freight journals". They are antique collectible items, but also very informative. I purchased a 1913 jounal at auction this year for a station on the Virginia "Washington & Old Dominion Railway. It is for the Whiele Station which is now Reston, Virginia. It lists almost all local residents 1913 since the railroad was the "butter and eggs" delivery service to rural residents. I would greatly enjoy a jounal from the Rimerton Station, Armstrong County on the old Allegheny Valley Railroad. If anybody knows the location of one for the period 1880 I would say I am blessed with incredible luck. Here are the oil books, I can easily look up a name in the indexes i have. The detail comes later. "Early & Later History of Petroleum with Authentic Facts in Regard to Its Development in Western, Pennyslvania, The Parkers' and Butler County Oil Field, also life sketches of Pioneer and Prominent Operatiors". By J.T. Henry 1873. "The Derrick's Hand-Book of Petroleum, A Complete Chronological and Statistical Review of Petroleum Developments from 1859 to 1898, Daily Market Quatations, Oil Exports, Field Operations and Other Subjects of Interest and Importance to the Oil Trade". By Derrick Publishing Company 1898. [I have the mortuary (500 names) index and biographical (150 names) index for this book] "Romance of American Petroleum and Gas, Vol I & II, By A.R. Crum and A.S. Dungan. Romance of American Petroleum and Gas Co". Date=? [If any relatives got "rich on oil" they are probably in this publication. It has great portrait photos and decent write-ups]. "Sketches in Crude-Oil, Some Accidents and Incidents of the Petroleum Development in All Parts of the Globe with Portraits and Illustrations". By John J. McLaurin 1898. This one is good and is in reprint. [Protraits in this book number 200] "Second Geological Survey of Pennyslvania 1876-7, Report of Progress II, Oil Well Records and Levels" (elevations above sea level). By John Fl Carll, published by the Board of Commissioners for the Second Geological Survey 1877. This is just one book of very many with others on coal, rocks, water, and ones for other years, both back and forward.

    3. In a message dated 98-01-03 11:56:56 EST, you write: << Looking for holdings of the following newspapers which appeared during oil field boom times in 1870 to 1880. If they have any information on these newspapers, they'll be more than happy to provide what you need. The address is: Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler, PA 16001, and the phone number is: (412) 387-1715. The person in charge of this department is Luanne Eisler, but anyone who is there should be able to help you. Hope this helps! 1. Alcola Church
    2. JSGA
    3. Hello all, As all of you know Martha Breene has been generously sharing information on the Mohney family of the Alcola Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Church, Redbank Twp, Clarion Co. The following was published in The Leader-Vindicator, New Bethlehem, Clarion Co on July 2, 1997: DECLINING MEMBERSHIP CLOSES DOOR OF CHURCH After 177 years, Alcola church property seeks new owners (There is a picture of the church with the following written under the photo: The picturesque brick church along Route 28 is the fourth such structure built on the property since the first log church was built there in 1820. The current building, now vacant, was constructed in 1913) Article written by Jennifer J. Algoe, L-V Staff Writer: ALCOLA - After 177 years in the Redbank Valley area, Trinity United Church of Christ held a final service and communion before closing its doors on June 21.(1997) Due to lack of members, the congregation voted to dissolve the church at a special meeting on May 29. "It's a sad thing," said Albert Ripple, a past president and long-time member of the congregation. "There weren't many dry eyes the night we decided to close." There were 24 members of the congregation at the time of the final service. "A membership of seven families can't support the building along with other things", Ripple explained, adding that it was a decision of practicality. At the special meeting, church officers were disbanded, and a special committee was formed to continue maintenance of the building and grounds until definite plans can be made concering the property's future. Ripple chairs the committee. According to Ripple, some families will transfer to Alcola's sister church, Nevin Memorial Church in Frogtown. Many of the remaining families are undecided of their plans. Church offficials are optimistic that the church can be used again for worship. There have been two inquiries, but the church is continuing its search for occupants, hoping to have a new congregation using the church building before the end of summer. The historic church was first incorporated as the Reformed Church of America in 1818 under the direction of Henry Koch, the church's founder and first minister. Koch, a circuit rider preacher from Indiana, PA, traveled into the tri-county region and founded many churches, including St. Paul's in Beaver Township near Knox, Ripple recalled. The first structure at the Alcola site was built in 1820 in the northeast corner of the church property, which today is the site of the Alcola Trinity Cemetery. After that log cabin church burned, another log structure was built in 1849; it was used until it burned in 1891. That year, the structure known as the "white church" was built in the location of the present building. In 1913, fire again struck the church; a funeral was to be held that day, and a fire was built to warm the mourners. It is believed that this fire caused the destruction of the white church. At that time, the present red brick building was constructed. As one of the oldest church organizations in the tri-county area, the congregation celebrated its 175th anniversary two years ago. As part of the celebration, many of the church's documents were displayed; those records will be sent to church archives in Lancaster. Under terms of a merger with the Evangelical and Reformed Church of America and Congregational Christian Church, the United Church of Christ was formed in 1962. In 1981, Alcola joined with five Presbyterian churches to form the Northwest Area Ministry. ***end of article*** I do not have church or cemetery records, but would certainly like to have them. If anyone has such records and would be willing to share either by email or snail mail, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. I have quite a large number of ancestors buried in the Alcola Trinity Cemetery. While I grew up in that area, I have not lived there for many years, so have not done onsite research. As far as I know the church is still unoccupied and unsold. If anyone has secured the church archives in Lancaster referred to in the preceding article will you share the address and what type of info you were able to secure? 1. David Hall - Margaret Hindman
    2. James Hindman
    3. Would like to add more to some sketchy information I have about the descendants of David Hall and his wife, Margaret Hindman, of N. Buffalo twp. What I have shows that David was born 1792, and died May 18, 1884. Margaret was born about 1793, and died March 15, 1864. After Margaret's death, David was shown in the 1870 census living with John Boyd and wife Jane. I believe Jane was David's daughter. Other children were: Mary, who is said to have married Wm. Morrison, and had four children James, who died 23 Jan 1914, had four children. But who did he marry, and what were children's names? Believe James was a Presbyterian minister, possibly for a time at Slate Lick Presby Church Margaret, who is believed to have lived 1826-1847, and prob not married. Rev. David, b. 1827, married Elizabeth Walker from Butler County, had four children. Believe he was pastor of Brady's Bend Presbyterian Church, 1858-1868. Would like to find out more about the children of David and Margaret, their dates of birth, and spouses, and where they lived. Willing to share information on Hindmans, and a limited amount I have on Boyds. James Hindman

    1. Aerial Photography
    2. BSJAGreen
    3. The aerial photos were taken of the US as early as 1924 to use in making US Geological Survey maps. But in the 1930's the Department of Agriculture took many more to map soils to aid the farmer and thus many areas where photographed usually from a couple thousand feet up to "gonna need oxygen limit". The National Archives in College Park Maryland has the film and the film indexes which reduce mosaics of the photos themselves. Find a mosaic index of an area, then find a photo number, get the film cannister, and roll to the specific photo, and then order a print copy or a negative. Usually the photo is a othographic photo, meaning the land looking straight down (or verticle) but some in the collection are oblique which tends to show other details. The Army seemed to do a lot of oblique photos of areas in the US during the WWII and I have some of areas in West Virginia that I;ve used for hiking. All the above means basically that one has to go to College Park, Md and see the photo to decide if it would be useful. Remote ordering could/can be done however I assume the cost goes up beyond the $10-15/photo price. I'll find out what detail the Archive people need to send a photo of a specific area, maybe it is just as simple as sending a circles area on a roadmap. Happy New Year All. Good Hunting! PS: You can get current photos of most areas in the US from county governments. The counties tend to fly full county area photo coverage on a periodic basis, some yearly, some every two years, others longer periods. These photos are by local aerial photo contractors and the county governments won the film and sell copies. Some of this photography is now coming available in digital form also.

    1. Re: Armstrong Furances
    2. Hello, Brian Thanks for the information about the photographs. I would be interested in getting more information about the photos if you have it. I am interested, personally, in the furnaces of Blair, Huntingdon and Bedford counties, as an ancestor of mine was an ironmaster in this area. Of course, two of the finest references on the subject of early iron manufacture in Pennsyvania are Pennyslvania Iron Manufacture in the Eighteenth Century written by Arthur C. Bining in 1938. I believe it has been reprinted. Another interesting read is Iron in All Ages by James M. Swank, published in 1884. I do not know if it has been reprinted, but am sure it is on microfilm somewhere. Happy New year to you. Old Stone Blast Furnaces of Western PA, by Sharp and Thomas also has a wonderful bibliography in the back. Best wishes for a Happy New Year to you both. 3. I have just got on to the Armstrong list and seen some of your writings on the furances of the area. I may recommend the aerial photos in the National Archives cartography section for purchase since they date from the mid 1930's and still show many details now since gone. Most of the photos were taken in the winter or early spring for mapping purposes. They cost $10-15 each for a 10" x 10" photo and are easy to order if your have the roll and frame numbers. I have a few and they are fun to use if you are going hunting on the ground. Also for history, since the furnaces were an extraction industry the US Geological Survery library in Reston Virginia and I assume the Pennsylvania Geo Survey in Harrisburg have good "old books" on the furnaces written from a "rocks" perspective but which many times contain names of people as owners or operators. I've used their fcailities to research the old Red Bank Furnace by Thomas McCullough and found many interesting itmes. All this is FYI Brian Green sangreen@tmn.com

    3. Hello Karen It would appear that are families travel in the same circle of people. You Wrote, > Shields family who came to live in the FAranklin County area of PA as > mentioned on the Lambing site . > I notice the statemant "-Due to the size of the book, I am skiping the > Shields > Yes when I wrote that I really didn't know much about making a web site, or using a scanner, I know perhaps a little more, and would be willing to post the information on the Shields family however I don't have the book, but I am working from copies I made of the book at the Pa. State Library, in Harrisburg. If you are a resident of Pa., you can get a interlibrary loan of the book on microfiche, so I was inform by the Pa. state library (sadly I no longer live in Pa.), and I did not copy the Shields part of the book, since I didn't plan to post the book on a web site when I made the copies. I don't have at least 7 pages of the book. However you are welcome to what I do have. Shield O'Shiel Shiels from the celtic patronymic O'Siadhail ( pronounced O'Sheeail) and there is a lot of information concerning the name. Here is some information concerning the family, what little I have, "Thomas Shields, the founder of this branch of the family in America, married a Miss O' Neil, in the southern part of his native county Donegal, Ireland, and emigrated to America with a number of other families of the same name, about the year 1745. This date is arrived at from the fact that his son John was born on the ocean on their way over, and he died of old age in 1825. Now, fixing his age at 80 years, which is not unreasonable, it will place the date of their emigration in the year given above. The party appear to have settled first in York county, awaiting the cessation of Indian hostilities, before proceeding further west, as many of that name took up lands in York county about, or soon after that time. Thomas, leaving the others, set out with his family, carrying his few effects on a horse , and cart; and it is said that, when he passed through Chambersburg, he was offered a large tract of the land, on which a part of the city now stands, for the horse and cart, but' he refused to accept it. Proceeding on his way northward he came to Amberson's Valley, in the northern part of Franklin county, where, in the northwestern part of the valley, he purchased about 300 acres of land and made it his permanent home. The record of the purchase is dated June 23, 1767. The date and place of his death are" (end of quote) Sorry I don't have more. Best wishes, Warren Lambing

    3. Hello Connie and Mimi and Brian Thanks for letting me know that they are two different furnaces, that is one aspect of these genealogy base email discussion groups I like, you correspond with people from or familiar with the area. Brian I will make a note if the pictures, I find it useful to be familiar with a counties history, when working on family in that county. I grew-up in Bucks county, and now find the familiarity I have with the county useful, while trying to look at family information, and I do appreciate the help from the list on some of the history of Armstrong county. Connie you wrote, > By the way, I think I recognize your name from the Lambing family. > Kathy Marcinek is a good friend of mine. I think you two might have > corresponded. > Yes Kathy is amazing, I am very grateful for all her help, she certainly is a top notch genealogist, and if you have had a chance to stop into my web site, you will she her name mention in many places, for work she has donated to me, and other family members who have posted some family history on my site. Please say hello to Kathy for me. Best wishes, Warren Lambing
