Hi, I would like to connect with anyone doing research on either of these two families. William Cook and his family arrived in America in 1832 and went direct to Armstrong County, PA. He was from Donegal County, Ireland. There were other Cook families who already lived in Armstrong County, but I have never been able to determine whether they were related or not. Here is the descendancy chart for William Cook. This is about all I have on his family at the present time. They lived in Cowanshannoock Township and I believe William helped form St Michael's church in that area. Some of William's children eventually moved to Modoc County, California. ========== 1-- William Cook-4 (1796-1863) sp-Isabella-5 (1796) 2-- Margaret Cook-6 (1827) sp-George Stockdale-124 (aka Stockdill) 2-- Elizabeth A. I am also looking for more information on this family. Some of William Hall's children also moved to Modoc County, California. 1-- William Hall-13 (1798-1871) sp-Mary-14 (1798-1858) 2-- Joshua Hall-15 (1826-1895) sp-Sarah (Sally) A. Hi, I am new to the list. I have been doing family history research for years but only recently began to use the internet. I have some success in Fayette Co. and am now turning to my line in Armstrong Co. I am looking for the ancestors of Thomas Matson born 1811(12) married Catherine Fiscus ( would like to know about her family as well). Is buried in Bear Creek Cem. Would appreciate any help. Also I have a copy of Index to Armstrong Co., PA Wills 1805-1900 and would be willing to do lookups for anyone who needs it ( if there is not someone else who already does this) Thank you for your help. Michele

Sorry everyone-this is for Susan but there was no direct e-mail for her Susan- I don't know if this helps or not, but there is a Phineas Runyan from Armstrong County who served in the Civil War. I can check for Regt. etc. if you think there may be a connection. Linda
Samuel Coleman b. 1801 s/o Charles Coleman and Elizabeth Early, who moved to Smickburg, with his parents and siblings about 1815 from Warriors Mark Twp in Huntingdon Co. Samuel Coleman died in 1862 Wayne Twp Armstrong Co. His wife's name was Lena Travis/Early. Many Colemans of Porter Twp Jefferson Co., Arnstong County and Indiana County are part of this family. Other names Gahagan/Travis/Pontious. Seeking others who are researching these lines. The Gahagans/Travises and Colemans all came to this area together from Huntingdon county. Have more info to share if you email me privately. Mimi Reed State College, PA
Hello everyone! I'm trying to find more about my husband's gr-grandparents, Calvin Runyan and Nancy Jane McGuire. They appear on the 1880 Armstrong Co. census...Kittanning Twp. The name was spelled Runion on the census Calvin was born in 1855 and was supposedly born in Devilstown. Has anyone heard of Devilstown? Nancy was born in 1854 and appears on the 1870 census Armstrong Co. living with the William Anthony family. All their parents were born in Pa. By 1900, they were living in Belmont Co., OH. The died there. Their children were: Robert, William Alvin, Calvin, Edward James, Allen and Elida Eithest.
Thanks for this posting Breene's. On this list there is an entry for a George & Elisabeth Beck and the bapitism of their son, George Washington Beck. Does anyone have this family in their database? This is the first George W. Beck I have seen and we have one in our though the dates are slightly off, I am wondering if this could be him? Thanks, Mary & Roger Scott rmscott@murieta.net

ATTENTION: individuals looking for locations in Pennsylvania or anywhere in the world. Here are several excellent free internet sources for finding locations. The US Government Maping Service has a site at http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html that gives many towns plus other details, including schools, churches, and cemeteries. Use your government resources. Select a county in a state and it will give you several pages of detail locations you can then identify on a high quality map you can print off. Modern townships are in the database. Just follow the instructions. Another free service is MapQuest at http://www.mapquest.com. This will give locations for any modern place in the world, including street maps of US and foreign cities. This is good for finding those little known places in Pennsylvania, as well as those small villages in Germany. (Note to Scott Stoner. Mapquest shows 4 Clintons in Pennsylvania. One on Butler Co and one in Armstrong Co The one in Armstrong Co is on the Allegheny River a few miles above Freeport. See the map forwarded.) A third outstanding location finder for Eastern Europe is ShtetlSeeker at http://www1.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm. This will locate small towns and villages anywhere in Eastern Europe, including Germany. It allows a Soundex variation, so you don't need the exact spelling. It responds with a table of possible hits, which you may then display the location via MapQuest, by just clicking on the Lat-Long given. It has the feature that you can enter a Lat-Long location of your own choice (closeby major city) and it will give you miles and direction from that point. The default direction and distance is from the country capitol. Another is only good for locations in Germany and is an email service called GeoServ. Go to http://www.qrz.com/gene/www/abt/geoserv.html to get instructions. This service is handled exclusively by email messages. Instead of using Soundex, it allows wildcard descriptions. Fred Held
Dear Hardie Hartung: This is what I have on Christian Truby: (1) LDS (Morman) Ancestral File: AFN19TZ-GLC: born 7/28/1835 in Kurhessen (Hessen-Cassel), Germany; father: George Truby [AFN: 19TZ-GCW]; mother: Barbara [afn: 19TZ-GD4]; spouse: Anna Elizabeth Weishaupt [AFN: 19TZ-D95]; married in Freeport, PA., 1855; died after 1914 in Freeport, Armstrong Co., Pa; Submitter: Marjorie B. Winter; Submission No. AF95-101998; P. O. Box 810, 7002 Lori Lane, Oriental, NC 28571 (2) Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Her People, Past and Present, J.H. Beers & Co. (1914), pp. 667-668: "Christian Truby, of South Buffalo township, Armstrong county, now living retired, is of German birth, being a native of Kurhessen (Hessen-Cassel), Germany, born July 28, 1835. George and Barbara Truby, his parents, were of the same place. The father was a carpenter by trade. "Coming to America in 1848, the family made the voyage in the sailing vessel "Albert," a three-masted schooner, and were eight weeks on the ocean, landing at Baltimore, Md. They proceeded to Cumberland, Md., and later to Pittsubrgh, Pa., by wagon, this journey being made in the winter time. Later they came to Freeport, Armstrong county, and Mr. Truby worked out the first two years. Then he obtained a farm in Butler county, Pa., where he and his wife died. They were members of the Lutheran Church. They had a family of seven children: Elizabeth, who died in Germany; Catherine, who died aged eighty-two years; Rosanna, who died aged thirty years; Eliza, deceased; George, deceased; Christian; and Henry, who served in the Civil war in the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry and was shot in the mouth and jugular vein, being taken to a hospital on Long Island, where he died and was buried. "Christian Truby attended school only two years, in his native land, being obliged to learn English without instruction. However, he had been a great reader in his time, though he has had to give up reading lately because of failing eyesight. As a boy of fifteen he was employed as driver on the Pennsylvania canal, and also worked at home on the farm. For two years he worked on a steamboat. Going to Muskingum county, Ohio, he worked at the trade of stonemason two seasons. Then he returned home and was married to Anna Elizabeth Waishupt. After his marriage Mr. Truby continued to live at home, taking care of his parents until they died, after which he left Butler county, coming to Freeport and settling on an island for two years. He has worked at the carpenter's trade ever since, and among the houses whicfh he has built is the home on Franklin street in which he has lived since its completion. "Mrs. Truby was born in Hessen-Cassel, Germany, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Waishupt, of that place, where the father died. As they had relatives in Pennsylvania the mother and children came to America, in 1850, and located in Freeport, Pa., where Mrs. Waishupt died. Mrs. Truby is the only one of the family now living. To Mr. and Mrs. Truby have been born children as follows: Lizzie, who is living in Philadelphia, Pa.; Fred, living in Oklahoma; Augustus, at home; Henry, deceased; John, of Butler, Pa., a carpenter and contractor; Catherine, deceasd; George Edward, living at home, who is engaged as a tinner and carpenter; Lewis, a carpenter, of Philadelphia, Pa.; Charles, a barber, of Philadelphia; Emma, living in Philadelphia; Mary, living in Philadelphia; and Samuel G., a street car conductor in Philadelphia. "Mr. Truby has always been a Republican in politics and during the Civil war he was a Union sympathizer. On Sept. 19, 1864, he enlisted in Company D, 67th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, doing considerable guard duty; he was in the battle of Sailor's Creek. He was discharged June 20, 1865, at Washington, D. C. Mr. Truby is a member of Weaver Post, No. 32, G. A. R. When he went to the war he had to leave his wife and five small children, and she ran the farm without other help, though obliged to get in all the grain and put in more for the next season. She also had to market all the produce, take care of the horses and cattle, build fences andget up the wood in the winter. Help could not be hired readily in those times and it was a terrible task for the frail little woman. Mrs. Truby can tell of many hardships experienced in the early days of the county. "Mr and Mrs. Truby are members of the Lutheran Chruch at Freeport. He was a Sunday school teacher in that church for twenty years. In his earlier years he was a noted singer, and gave singing lessons." [3] Yesterday when I responded to your e-mail, I said that I had information about a Christian Truby in Venango County. It turns out he was from Butler and Armstrong Counties. I do have information about Venango County Truby's, but they do not appear to be related to your Trubys (came to America from Germany about 1800) nor my Truby's. Best of luck, Jane

Jim, I understand the Armstrong Co. Gen Web site crashed in late Oct. or early Nov. I understood it would be fixed by the first of Dec. Haven't tried it just lately but it still wasn't working as of a week or so ago. I don't quite know who to report this too. According to the tombstone in Kansas, she was born 18 April 1830. According to 1870 Ohio Census for Meigs Country, she was born in Prussia or Germany. Another source indicates it may have been PA. However, she did marry Conrad Hartung and their first three sons, George - February 1851, Augustus - 4 November 1853, and Christian - 1855, were all born in PA. All I know is that they left from Freeport, PA between 1855, when Christian was born, and 1861, when my grandfather, Lawrence Casper, was born in Ohio in 1861. Hardie Hartung HARTUNG@worldnet.att.net >> I haven't been able to locate your Anna Elisabeth TRUBY yet, but the fact that she and family came from the Freeport area (Armstrong Co) is a pretty good indication that she was a part of our TRUBY family. While my files are extensive, they are by no means complete. The only TRUBY family living in the Freeport/South Buffalo area in 1850 was William and Susan (MURPHY) TRUBY. Their eldest known child was Mary Elizabeth, b & d 1834. However, William had a brother, Henry, b 1800, whose only marriage in my records was to Alvina HILL who was 30 years younger than he; their first child was born in 1860. It's possible that he had an earlier marriage. That's just one possibility. There are no HARTUNGs listed in the 1850 Armstrong Co. Census, so your Conrad must have arrived later. Sorry I can be of so little help. Sharon A. Huffman
Thanks for reply. As far as I know, there are no Quinns' or Sarah/Sadies in the line I am going on at the moment. There's no doubt though there will be crossings with Kramers and if I run on to your inquiry I'll try to remember to send any info I find. Robert, I don't know if this is a connection or not, but I am looking for a Sadie KRAMER (I have only heard the name, never seen it in print, and this is what the people who told me said the spelling was). She was from somewhere near the Armstrong County area, but may possibly have been from Pittsburgh. She married Edward Patrick QUINN. Apparently, they led a pretty wild life and moved around a lot. I don't have any hard info on either of them. If you come across Sadie (probably Sarah on official records) could you let me know? Patti Garcia By the way, I thought it was a pretty good first post--good information for people to try to make connections. ==== PAARMSTR Mailing List ==== To reach archived messages, go to: http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists/PAARMSTR-L/
