Hi, I am wondering if anyone there has access to census. I am looking for Shirley family in Ven, Cla, Arms Counties. I am looking for the family in close proximity to the Nicholas Snow family in the 1840 or 1850 census. Nicholas Snow and Rachel Shirley married somewhere/sometime before 1845. I believe that they were at sometime in the same area. Thanks in advance. Maureen
Hi! I, like all of you, am looking for my roots in Armstrong County. I descend from Stitts, Kiers and Smiths. Thanks to many people I have my Stitt and Kier lines complete, but the SMITHs are another story. I really am not sure where my Smiths came from, but my great grandmother Sarah Matilda Stitt was born in Armstrong County, so I'm hoping this is a good place to continue my research. My grandmother, Matti Golinger 'Goldie' Smith was born in 1885 in Springdale (Allegheny Co). Her parents were Andrew Kier 'AK' Smith (b. in the 1850s?; d. aft 1919) m. Sarah Matilda Stitt (1862-1894) 1880 at 1st Presbyterian Church, Apollo. AK's parents were Edward A. Smith (Prob b. 1820s) m. Hannah Jane Kier (b. 1832, Armstrong Co). The other line with connections to Armstrong County is FRYER. Sarah Matilda's mother was Margaret Ann FRYER, b. 1/27/1824 (Armstrong Co) and d. 9/15/1903, Parks Twp, Armstrong Co. Family legend said this line of Smiths was German. I was told recently that I 'look' German, although I had (30 years ago) red hair and freckles. The family has always said I look like the Smiths. I have no idea what nationality Fryer might be. I didn't even have the name until a few months ago when a Stitt researcher sent me the Stitt line. I have been unable to find these Smiths or Fryer in the IGI, but until recently was under the impression that the IGI was a COMPLETE index of all possible files. I now know this to be not true and have begun searching census records. Hopefully, I will find them and at least be able to put an approximate birthdate on them and possibly a place of birth. My goal in my genealogy research is to take as many lines as possible back to their country of origin and maybe to learn why these ancestors emigrated. I have a good start with several lines, but the Smiths and a couple of others elude me. Any help greatly appreciated. Michael

In a message dated 98-02-03 12:24:14 EST, you write: << Hi Sharon: Would you mind looking up the surname of STITT? There were quite a few of them in Armstrong Co. Thanks... Ed Stitt sceptre@airmail.net >> I found no STITTs in my family records, but mine were primarily in Perry and Brady's Bend Tps, and yours seem to have been primarily in Allegheny and Kittanning Tps. So far I have only scanned thru "If These Hills Could Talk," and found nothing. This book has over 200 pp and is unindexed. I have to refer to it so often, that I"m know in the process of surname indexing. If I find STITTs there later I will let you know. Hi The National Archives have pension records for civil war veterans and they require a specific retrieval form which should be available on the net. Since Nicholas Snow died in service the pension application would have been in the name of his wife which I believe you have. Virtually all applications for pensions by Armstrong County veterans and survivors were granted since politically Armstrong County was instrumental in electing the Pension Officer in Pittsburgh. When you receive the form you will note 3 options exist relative to data you may access. That is: military record, bounty land warrants or pension. The info you seek will be in the pension record. Pension records contain military service info but military records do not provide the pension data. Contained in the pension file will be the date of marriage, maiden name of wife and often the place of marriage and sometimes the name of the parents of the man or woman. Also, if there were any children under the age of 16 they will be named and birthdates will be included. There are numerous books written about Andersonville Prison and a relatively recent film produced by Turner, I believe, titled "Andersonville". Recently one of the contributors mentioned having the Regimental History of the 103rd. who may be willing to assist you if you are seeking specific experiences of members of that regiment in Andersonville. I will check my data base for a specific location of the Nicholas Snow family and advise you of what I find. The pension record will likely give you the place of enlistment although if I recall correctly the members of Company B were recruited from the Northwest part of the county My apologies to the group for not sending this directly to Maureen but as I recall there were others interested in this family as well. I have several photos of persons identified by name penciled on the reverse side. A problem exists in that there are at least two persons with the same name iiuals two or three generations apart. If any one can offer assistance in dating the photos it would be greatly appreciated. Please reply via E-mail to ,,, victorbrob@aol.com. I can send photos via E-mail attachment.. Please indicate desired format. Thanks in advance.

I have some ROSS'S. My gggrandmother Emily Josephine ROSS was born in Pittsburgh 15 MAY 1853. She married Robert W. KENNEDY also from Pittsburgh. The only information I have on her father is his name D. ROSS, birthplace unknown. Does any of this ring a bell?
