    2. I have located a Philip L. Smith in the Brick Church Cemetery(St. Michaels). He was born 1/28/1839 and died 6/23/1914. You mention A.S. Doutt's pension papers. Was he a civil war veteran from Armstrong County? If so, he has never been credited with service from this County. If he served from Armstrong County in any era please advise so I may update my military service records.

    3. Hi Fred. I'm fairly new to this Ancester chase and I've noticed that you have been doing a lot of lookups for people from various reference material. Could I ask you where you got the information for the Oakland Cemetery? I have a LOT of relatives buried in that Cemetery, CRAMER, MICHILINE, CLEMENS, Etc. I would be interested in obtaining the book or whatever information for myself. Can you tell me where if it is still available? In these Census the interviewer recorded whether persons could read or write, ergo the incident at best attempts to spelling but nonetheless ones that produce changes. One family I know is Lawhorn. The Welsh spelling is Laugharn and pronounced as Laaaaaarrnnnn, almost a genuine southern drawl. But since first coming to this country in the 1700's the name variations have been in Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee are Lanhorn, Lowhorn, Lawhern, etc. Brian Green

    3. Is anyone out there working on the Sollada or Soliday family? I am not related, but I ran across a cemetery in Clearfield Co., PA today while I was having an adventure that had a Samuel T. Sollada, born 1850 died 1926. His wife was Nettie R. 1855-1926. I hope to get back in the spring to document this cemetery if anyone is interested in this info. Sherry Jesberger gljslj@penn.com

    1. Re: [PAARMSTR-L] William D. JONES
    2. Ted, I, too, am looking for a Jones family that has been eluding me. All I know about them is the following: A David and Emma JONES were the parents of Marie JONES. On July 19, 1899, she married Harry E. J. PUTNEY, most likely in Kittanning. She had four children: Jean (who may have been Harriet E. Jean) David Judson (listed on the 1910 census as Judeth) Madge M. Frances C. She died sometime between 1918 and 1920. Harry E. J. departed for places unknown. I have census records on order to try to find out more about David and Emma, but haven't received them yet. If you have these JONES in your family tree, I could sure use the help! Also, how do I go about getting a marriage record for this pair, or a death certificate for Marie? I am pretty sure both events occurred in Kittanning, but don't have a way to verify that. The other possibility I know of might be Putneyville for the marriage, since many family members lived there. If they were married wherever she was from, then I have no idea where the marriage occurred. Thanks, Patti Garcia At 07:05 AM 2/6/98 +0000, you wrote: >Hi to all, > >It's been awhile since I have posted here since genealogy research to a >back seat for a bit. In a message dated 98-02-06 12:52:14 EST, pagarcia@primenet.com writes: << Also, how do I go about getting a marriage record for this pair, or a death certificate for Marie? >> There may be a marriage record at the county courthouse for the county in which they married. I don't know about Armstrong County, but other area counties began issuing licenses and keeping records in 1885. You would have to contact the Armstrong Co. courthouse to find out how to go about requesting such a record. As to the death record, you could try writing to PA Vital Records (address follows). You would ask them to check one of the years you suspect she died in, and they would either notify you that they don't have a record for that year, or they would send you a death certificate. If they didn't have a record for that year, you would then send in a new request for the other year. Unfortunately, for each year you wish them to check, they would expect another fee. This fee is $3.00, and since you have 3 years in question, you could end up sending in 3 different requests, and spending $9.00 total. Another possible avenue of research would be to contact a library in Kittanning to see if they have a genealogy department, and if they perhaps have old newspapers on microfilm, and/or an obituary index. You may be able to get someone there to check these years for an obituary on this woman, which would then give you the information you need. Should such a service not be available through the library, check to see if there is a genealogical or historical society in the area, and check with them for an obituary. I hope this has helped somewhat. Irene Crawford JTJTJ5@aol.com Address for PA Vital Records P.O. Box 1528 New Castle, PA 16103

I am looking for a Henry and Mary Miller who lived near South Bend, probably were born about 1795 - 1805. Could someone check to see if they are listed in a cemetary? 3. Hi to all, It's been awhile since I have posted here since genealogy research to a back seat for a bit. At any rate, I am still in search of information on my gggrandfather (William D. JONES). William D. JONES was born JAN 10, 1845 in Minersville, Meigs County, Ohio and died NOV 16, 1877 in Oakland (now Distant), Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. According to the Census' that I have found him in he appears to have been a "coal digger". I believe he may have worked around the furnaces. He was in Mahoning Furnace around 1869 and then went to Mansfield (now Carnagie) Allegheny County, PA. and then seemed to return to Armstrong County locating in Pine Creek Furnace in 1870. Sometime between 1870 and 1872 he returned to Mahoning Furnace and then by 1874 he located to Oakland (now Distant). He was married to Margaret Jane BOWSER prob. abt. 1868. 3. I agree with Sherry. I have about four generations of wills from Lancaster, PA in the 1700's and in one will alone the surname is spelled three different ways. I believe after talking with people there and others, the English and clerical type folks in the courts just kind of wrote and spelled out what they thought they heard.

    3. Most of the time this is because a census taker, or other official spelled the name as they thought it sounded. In my family, I have the Copella's (my family's spelling) Or Copello, or Copelli. My Nulf family is also Nolf, Nulph, and Nolph. Because alot of these people were immigrants with odd accents and most were unable to read or spell, it probably was very difficult for someone hearing the name and then trying to write it to pinpoint an exact spelling. Didn't Daubenspeck turn into Doverspike or something like that? It kills me when you contact a family member with an alternate spelling of a name, and they say "We can't be related-- we don't spell our name that way!" Have fun at your newfound obsession! 3. I'm new to genealogy. Something I'm puzzled about is why some change the spelling of their surnames. For instance, my family spells their surname both Cravener and Cravenor. I have a copy of a Brink family tree produced in 1984. It lists my ggrandfather as spelling his name Cravenor. His sons then split, some keeping the spelling Cravenor, while others change to Cravener. Is there a general consensus or axiom regarding the reasons this happens? TIA Arthur Cravener (ex-Kittanningite) ps I'd like to thank some of the list members here for assisting with my family research.
