I agree whole-heartedly with the idea of doing something in the Subject Line to indicate better what to ZAP and what to read......this would cut down considerably on the time involved......personal posts would help also on trivial matters of little interest to the group.....use discretion.....that is the key word here......Rick Auden

I'm a little bit discouraged with this list because (1) no one sends personal answers but addresses their messagesto everyone on the list which is quite often not necessary, and (2) no one puts subjects, like surnames, in the subject line. Most of that line is taken up with PAARMSTR-L and we know that's what it is. We are doing genealogy and looking for surnames and we want to make the time that we are paying for work for us. I'm reading a lot of messages that don't mean a thing to me because they are in reply to someone else's message but the subject is not mentioned in the subject; therefore, I can't just zap it and move on. (2)I think the PAARMSTR Introduction should be eliminated. A better introduction would be to list surnames instead. I'm trying to be constructive here instead of destructive, but I think we could all make this into a much more efficient list. I belong to five lists. For examples of more efficient lists, check out va-roots or even Roots-L and see how they use subject lines. Pat Genealogy forever--housework hardly ever! Pat Weisshaus patjw28@interaccess.com

Hi Jane, I saw that you have the will book for Armstrong County and I am wondering about my relatives the McConnel family? I have a poor copy of the will book pages 192 and 193 with John McConnells will and am wondering if you know of anything that goes back any further. wes witten / oracle@netplus.net At 09:53 PM 3/3/98 EST, you wrote: >I have the will index for Armstrong County. Looking for any information on the ancestors and/or descendents of Robert D. SUTTON. Robert was born 1844 in Freeport, PA (Armstrong Co?). He was a drummer in the Civil War. He married Mary (maiden name unknown) 10/29/1872. Mary Sutton was believed to have been born in Shippenville, PA. Children: Lizzie, Ida, Phillip J., Emmett H., Charlie W., Maud, Harry C. (my husband's grandfather), William, James W., and May. I do not know any other information on the children, (except Harry C.) or the parents of Robert D. Sutton. Also looking for ancestors of James Shields LUCAS, raised in Kaylor, PA. Married a McLaughlin, and believed to have divorced. Remarried Mary Murray (she had two previous children Margaret and William). Mary and James had one son, James Joseph Lucas (my husband's grandfather). Any assistance will be appreciated, (T. I try to keep my answers public, as long as we're discussing genealogy and not file sharing details or personal stuff that others don't need to know. Many times a healthy threar has started because each new name mentioned brings a response from someone else (2) no one puts subjects, like surnames, > in the subject line. Most of that line is taken up with PAARMSTR-L and we > know that's what it is. We are doing genealogy and looking for surnames and > we want to make the time that we are paying for work for us. Messages should be titled better - like surname, township, year. If a subject is changed, go ahead and change it before you send your message - this thread was still labeled 'Hancock', so I changed it to 'message subject lines' > (2)I think the PAARMSTR Introduction should be eliminated. A better > introduction would be to list surnames instead. > As far as the mailing list name in the subject, I believe this is something that rootsweb is doing. I belong to eight different counties, I can glance at the inbox and see Armstrong, Indiana, Jefferson, Westmoreland, etc at the front of the subject. When I clean the inbox, and sort by subject, all the messages from the same list are grouped together. If you use an inbox assistant, the message can automatically be routed to a folder before being read, because the 'PAARMSTR' is part of the subject. > Pat > Genealogy forever--housework hardly ever!
