    3. My two Armstrong County families left there for Iowa about 1855. Other than the 1850 census, and a bit of a land record on the Ashkettle...I have discovered nothing about these families. Any help would be appreciated. James A. ASHKETTLE married about 1830 Rebecca. (Family stories say BULL or BUTTS but neither may be true). Civil War Records and obits for their children show the children were born in Armstrong Co PA...There may be a connection to a Hutchinson family as their eldest son is named James Hutchinson ASHKETTLE. He married Mary Ann SNYDER before the left Armstrong County. They are associated with Plum Twp. After they Ashkettle's moved to Iowa their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, married a native of Armstrong County, PA. James Washington WOODS who appears as a child in Freeport Twp Armstrong County PA in the 1850 census with his parents William and Hannah/Fanny CARNAHAN WOODS. William and Fanny also married about 1830, and records show their children born in Armstrong County. William Woods death record says he was born in Westmoreland County. In 1850, he was a coal digger in Freeport Twp. I was at the courthouse in Armstrong County and find one land record for James A. Ashkettle, and nothing that matches up in Orphans Court records. Are there other places I should be looking for these families other than census, land, orphans court, probate court? One would think with a name like Ashkettle it would be easy to trace. 3. Great idea to list Armstrong County surnames with marriage connections. Sorry mine is so lengthy but perhaps this team effort will locate a missing ancestor for all of us. Dates on the following are between 1697 and 1900. I will be happy to send whatever I have on any of these surnames. We never know when we are holding a clue to a puzzle. The first six names are direct lines to my family: HEILMAN / HILEMAN / HARTER / WINGARD / YOUNT / ISEMAN / PEISER REED / HERSHEY / TARR / ORR / GIBSON / RICHARDSON / LARKIN / DAVIS / RUMMEL / CROYLE / MANIER / BRINEY SCHALL / KUNKLE / BLOSE / AYE / SCHRECKENGOST / HECKMAN / COOK / HANKEY / SMITH / KING / STITT HERSHBERGER / SCHAEFFER / EIMAN LOHR / REARIC / SCHEASLEY / GEORGE / SPEAR / STREIGHTIF / BOWSER / FRANKLIN / PETERSON / CLARE / McMILLEN / DICKEY / MILLER / STEELE / PIPER / BOARTS / BACULIK / PEPLER / NICHOLS / HEFFLEFINGER / MARSH / McCLARREN / KNIGHT / BURNS / NOLDER / WYANT / DALEY / MILLER / CARR / JOHNSON / KIENE / FAYKOSH / COULTER / COFFMAN / JOHNSTON / ALMES / JACKSON / GORMAN / DAVIS / ZUVER / KING / SCHEASLEY / SPENCER / McCURDY / McDERMOTT / BLOOMHURST / KUTCH KRAMER / BLANEY / KLINGENSMITH / KINARD / ARTMAN / MONTGOMERY / GORMAN / JONES / SIBOLE / STOOPS / MONTGOMERY / BAILEY / RUPERT / OWEN / MILLS / SCHRUMM / PIPER / WOLF.

    3. Jeff, I didn't see the initial post, but I am related to Matthew and Martha Ferguson Steele, born in Ireland. Their children were Sarah Steele Young 1806-1893, John 1808-1890, James 1813-1896, Joseph H. 1815-1892, and Martha Steele Boleman 1816-1891. If you are tied into any of these lines, let me know. There is a wonderful cemetery in Armstrong County where all three of the sons are buried, along with other Steele relatives. Let me know if any of this connects. Carol carjfraser@aol.com

    1. [PAARMSTR-L] Shelocta-Indian Town
    2. C. L. Mateer
    3. Near the mouth of Plum Creek, near Shelocta, James LeTort had a trading house, which was near the forks of the Frankstown Path to Kittanning and Chartier's Town. This is mentioned in some of the early records of Indiana Co. as James Le Tort's Town. This was also the site which is noted on Schull's map (1770) as "Tohoguses Cabbins". The term was used by the Iroquois in speaking of the Algonkian tribes, and was frequently applied to the Shawnee. The name therefore, is simply the Iroquois name for "Shawnee Cabins". There were several places in the region about Shelocta, where the Shawnee had cabins. Because of its situation near the forking of the two trails, the trading house at the mouth of Plum Creek, was probably well patronized.
