I am new to this list and would very much appreciate a lookup in the 1860 census for WILLIAM R. and ELIZABETH (MYLER) DUFF. Could you please tell me who is in the family, their ages, etc. My index says it would be found on p. 274. Thank you very much! I believe that William was a tailor. Nancy -- I'm working on it. My sister lives in the area and is active in the church there. She is asking for the information. Don't hold your breath or anything---she works , has an active family and is involved in tons. But when she gets back to me, I'll let you know. good afternoon Armstrong County, Could anyone tell me where naturalizations done in Armstrong County, specifically Kittanning Borough, in the 1850's timeframe would be held? Is there a regional NARA that holds these records? Is there any existing name index to these naturalizations? Thank you for any information, Sherri Bobish Searching from Kittanning Borough: MCGARRY
Hello Nancy, I have no idea if my Landis go back to York Co. I would suspect that the family did come from eastern PA at one time; however, the families that I had living in York Co. in the early 1700s was Wilson and Weems/Wemyss. The area where they lived later became located in Adams Co. in 1800. I am aware of the Landis Valley in eastern PA; but, have not gotten that far with my research. Joseph Landis is my brick wall at the moment. Hello, It has been some time since I last posted so I thought I would give my family info again in the hope that some new subscribers might connect to me. My g,g,grandfather David LANDIS b.Feb, 12, 1831, Mifflin Co., settled with his first wife, Mary BENTON in Worthington, PA. They had one son, Aaron Thomas LANDIS b. Aug. 1, 1855. Mary (BENTON) LANDIS died in Worthington, Pa on Feb. 25, 1857. On July 23, 1857, David LANDIS married my g,g,grandmother, Sarah Ellen KENNEDY b. Mar. 31, 1842. The following are their children who most or all were born in Worthington, PA: Emma Jane LANDIS b. Sept. 18, 1860 Ida Mae LANDIS b. March 5, 1866, m. William Barringer b. 1838, and was his second wife. (My Line) Carlotta Ellen LANDIS b. June 18, 1867 Lillian Maude LANDIS b. Sept. 14, 1870; m. Mr. Stange Margaret Benton LANDIS b. February 12, 1872, (Twin) William Joseph LANDIS b.February 12, 1872, (Twin) m. Nellie MCNUTT b. 1887. William was the City Treasurer for Monongahela, PA. Mary Belle LANDIS b. Mar. 15, 1874 Pearl Josephine LANDIS b. June 22, 1876 Since I know from documents that Aaron Thomas Landis was born in Worthington, his mother, Mary buried in Worthington, my g,grandmother born in Worthington, and her youngest male sibling, William Joseph born in Worthington, PA, I think I am safe in saying that David LANDIS lived in Worthington, PA at a minimum from 1855 to 1872. I do not have information on where Mary Belle or Pearl Josephine were born; but, a good guess would be also in Worthington, Pa. I also know that David had a father by the name of Joseph LANDIS who I think also came to Worthington, PA. I have been hoping that Joseph moved his family from Mifflin Co. earlier so that someday I might learn about David's siblings. I found David LANDIS d. May 29, 1906; Sarah Ellen (KENNEDY) LANDIS d. Oct. 2, 1918; William LANDIS d. June 6, 1938; and Nellie (MCNUTT) LANDIS d. July 1, 1928, all buried in a row at the Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela, Washington Co., PA. Note: The cemetery lists as the owner of the cemetery plot for David and Sarah Ellen Landis as a J. Ramage. I am wondering if Pearl Josephine married a RAMAGE. I certainly hope that someone on the list connects with me. Nancy- I have one reference to an Elder in my family book. A Mary Elder had adjoining property to my first ancestor with my surname. It was in Westmoreland County, Armstrong Township . He bought 150 acres of land on the waters of Crooked Creek adjoining Mary Elder. and Andrew Johnson. The warrant was issued Aug.11, 1786. It is recorded as warrant No. 252 in the Land Office, State Archives, Harrisburg,PA. Page 5 of this book. No other mention is made of Mary. Vergie Mc.
Hello from Vancouver, Washington State, USA on the Columbia River! Last week a cousin found the name of my ggg-grandfather JOSEPH ELDER, as a "Scotsman who settled in PA" -- from the "History of Monroe Co MI" by Bulkley. So now I'm looking for a JOSEPH ELDER in PA, who had a son JOHN, b. 1805 PA. Son JOHN ELDER moved to Perrysburg, Wood County OH in 1825. (My gg-grandfather) John's son JOSIAH ELDER, b. 1848 in Wood Co, moved to Monroe Co MI after mustering out of the Civil War. (My g-grandfather) Some of the early JOSEPH ELDER locations I found on Ancestry.com PA Census index: Franklin County, PA: 1810 Warren Township 1830 1840 1850 Fannett Township 1850 Washington Twp 1810 1830 Mercer Co Slippery Rock Twp 1830 Philadelphia Co, Phila. 1820 Washington Co.,West Bethlehem Twp Westmoreland Co: 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 Unity Twp. 1850, 1860 Ligonier Twp. also 1790 Ulster/Orange Co NY Enjoying the similar ELDER names in the Armstrong Co Beers History Transcription Project: http://www.pa-roots.com/~armstrong/beersproject/history/chap23.html .... SCHOOLS "As early as 1826 an organization existed in Elderton called the "New Middletown Schoolhouse Stockholders," who built in 1828 a schoolhouse, the first teacher being Josiah Elder. On the site of this frame school is located a fine brick public schoolhouse...." Sure hope I can connect with these interesting families. -- Nancy Elder Petersen, Retired School Librarian 14514 NE 52nd Circle Vancouver, WA 98682 Phone: 360-882-1039 http://www.teleport.com/~nancyp/elder.htm
