    3. There was a Buttermilk Falls that I visited many times as a youth in Leechburg, at least that's what we called it. It was on the hillside across the river from Leechburg in Allegheny Twp, Westmoreland Co on a small stream that is in the valley that PA56 goes S toward Weinel's Crossroads. The road that goes to West Leechburg crosses over the stream. I might add that many of these natural features that we knew by name are actually on the modern local maps of the area with those same names. >Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 22:34:40 -0500 >From: Sher Dantzer <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [PAARMSTR-L] Hmmm, Vandergrift? > >Bobby. 3. I have a copy of an 1861 Armstrong County Map that has the names of land owners on it. My copy was made from the copy that the Armstrong County Court House Map Division has. It is on one huge sheet of paper, that I unroll when needed. The names are a little fuzzy, due to the fact that it is a copy made version and not a published typed version. Cost I believe was about $4.00 a year ago. I might add that they will not make you a copy if there is too much dampness in the air. Something about the ink will run too much. At any rate, what I wanted to stress was the date of this map - that being 1861. To the best of my knowledge there is no idex to this map, but there is one for the 1876 map published in book form by Mechling. 2. To "Michael Lewis", et. al. This is a very good map. Are you aware of any maps for Armstrong Co., that show the various twps. with the plat owners listed as per this map, ca. 1820-1830? Thank you for your time. The township was named after Colonel (later General) Armstrong who commanded the celebration against Kittanning. It seems to have been organized in 1784 or 1785. Washington Township was created from Armstrong Township in 1807. Center Township was formed from Armstrong Township in 1807 and was named for its position within the County. White Township was formed in 1843 and named for Judge Thomas White. It was created from parts of Center, Washington, Green, and Armstrong Townships. Rayne Township was created from Washington and Green Townships in 1845 If anybody knows the present days townships, I would also be interested. Thanks! 3. Donna There are counties that will issue a death certificate, all nicely done on parchment paper etc. for a fee of $7.00, I believe. I do not know if Armstrong county is one of them. But it is a futile expense, because the county will also forward the same information in a less 'formal' manner for a much lower expense. You probably do not want to spend the extra money for the same information. Many of the early records are spotty at best, and the county requirements for information are much less than the state requires. Also, even state records can be spotty in the early years, and be missing some information. But definitely, go ahead and inquire whether or not the information was registered. It is worth a try. The county kept records from 1893-1905, and then Pennsylvania started the state vital statistics in 1906. 3. Donna: You can't get a death CERTIFICATE from the County Courthouse. The County Courthouses have death RECORDS. There is a difference. Death CERTIFICATES are issued from/by the state and cost $3.00 Only those persons who died in 1906 or after have death certificates. Death RECORDS are generally only ledger entries. What you will get for deaths prior to 1906 from the counties (if they have the record) is a photocopy of the line entry in the ledger. The counties weren't very good at keeping the records. Nancy was the daughter of John MORRISON, Jr. and Jane (last name unknown). Nancy and Oliver had 4 children. Martha J. MORRISON, b. Sep. 1832; m. James FULTON. Martha and James had at least 6 children. These are not in my direct line but I have source references for them as well as a small bit more information. 3. Hi John, I am related to this Morrison family through James B and Rebecca Schrader Morrison's first born child Milton B Morrison. I'll be glad to help you all I can. You can email me at [email protected] In the 1850 census I believe the family can be found in South Buffalo township, Armstrong county PA Page 104. I have information that Nancy Morrison married a James B Pemberthy? Is that information incorrect? Please respond. I also had that Nancy was the mother of thirteen children; 1) Elizabeth Pemberthy married a Mr. Van Fosen 2) Thomas 3) Anna who married a Mr. Anderson 4) William 5) Edward 6) Harry 7) John 8) James 9) Jennie who married a Mr. Smith 10) Katie who married a Mr. Shifley 11) Mary who married a Mr. Linden 12) Cora who married a Mr Vercythe 13) Ella who married a Mr. Van Fosen "The death record for Nancy, 1926, completed by son James b. 1856" This James is Nancy's brother I believe not her son. The 1860 census record is the correct family indeed and Mary Ann is a second wife. Sometime after 1870, James B Morrison moved to Surprise, Butler county Nebraska and opened the first Grocery store in the County. James was the son of John Morrison and Nancy Barnes. James was married three times. He had nine children to his first wife Elizabeth Schrader (also seen as Srader) who died Jan 14 1858. He then married Mary Ann Meldren who was born in England and died at age 64 on April 23 1889. There were two children born to this marriage. On Nov 21 1889 James married Mrs. Lovina Elliott who was born Sept 29 1824 in England and survived him by about six years. Lovina died in Surprise on Feb 15 1909. I hope this helps. Please get back to me on this. Becky Murphy Dahl John Hogg wrote: > > I have had several responses to my request for a lookup in these with no > results. 3. Hi John, I don't have any specific information but I am interested in your message. I have an Isaac and Catherine (WINGARD) SILVIS family of Allegheny Twp, Armstrong Co. They named one child Morrison and another child James Morrison. James was born in 1849. These do not seem to be family names so I have assumed that they are named after a family friend. Isaac and Catherine were born in Westmoreland Co. before moving to Armstrong abt 1829. I see that there is a James MORRISON in the 1850 census Allegheny Twp. Westmoreland Co. pg. 335. Have you checked this one out yet? I would be interested in hearing more if you find your James MORRISON.
