I think they were designed to get rid of animals viewed as predators. They circled an area and moved in to trap the animals. I believe they also used beaters (men making noise) to drive the animals. Does anyone else have a better definition? Tom: Check out page 137 in History of Clarion County,Pa. by A. J. Davis.. Grand Circular Fox Hunt...The local men meet, have boundries, and appoint marshall's...they have their assistants from each of the different points form a perfect circle, The bugle is sounded and they capture live foxes and offer two dollars a head ...firearms are prohibited..I have found many men in my family tree by reading those listed for the different points in the circle.. Hi Al; Yes, I know the cemetery. I think it's on private property. Would have to contact the landowner. It's not very accessible. And the fact that my cousin shot 2 copperheads about 2 miles from the Smith Cemetery two weeks ago and with the stone wall surrounding the Smith Cemetery and the fact that I'm not getting any younger. That's a lot of excuses. The Smith Cemetery needs more that a lawn mower. It needs a couple fellows with chain saws. But it would be nice cleaned up. Oh well, I guess I'd be available. I am looking for information on or the descendents of Peter CONFER, born August 31, 1806 in Gregg Twp., Centre Co., PA to Frederick CONFER and Elizabeth WERNER. I found Peter's Baptism in the Penn's Creek Lutheran Church records of Gregg Twp., Centre Co., PA. (CONFER can also be found with alternate spellings: CONFERE, CONFAIR, CONFEHR, CONFARE, etc.) Sometime prior to 1821, Frederick CONFER moved his family from Centre Co., PA to Buffalo Twp., Armstrong Co., PA. His wife Elizabeth died before 1826, and Frederick remarried to Catherine (Unknown), widow of John BISH. In 1850, Frederick and Catherine are living in Porter Twp., Clarion Co., PA. Frederick had several known daughters: Catherine (Confer) NULF, Rebecca (Confer) BISH, Elizabeth (Confer) BISH, and Sarah (CONFER) YALE HIMES. I have volumes of info on the daughters, but I know ~nothing~ about brother Peter CONFER, who by all accounts was the only son born to Frederick and Elizabeth (WERNER) CONFER. Did Peter survive to raise a family? Any info appreciated. Sherry Bish Jesberger
Sandi, I checked my Tidal Cem book and there are no names between Gray and Hagerty. I also checked the Widnoon Cem book and no Green there. Do you know that he was buried in that part of Madison Twp? Do you know which Craigs he lived with? Did he marry a gal from the area? I am in touch with a former Craig. By the way I'm partial to the color Gray, they are my line! Kathy Hayden Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 16:09:28 -0400 From: Sandi Brian Green To: PAARMSTR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAARMSTR-L] Green's in the Tidal Cemetery I checked the Tidal Cemetery on the Armstrong GenWEb page. They have what seems to be a good listing. There are lots, lots of Grays but no Greens. Oh, darn. The names go from Gray to Hagerty which suggests there may be a sheet that has been eliminated, or it's the color issue. Grays Green's,whatever. My great grandfatherWillliam Franklin Green grew up in Madison living with a Craig family while journeyman father John Green was over in Washington Township working on a Patton farm. The Tidal Cemetery listing was helpful to my McCullouogh searces however. John Green's wife was a Margaret E. McCulloough, who I believe is related to those in Madison - an Edward McCullough family who in the 1860 Census has a William McCullough age 88 living with the next visit family, an Early branch. William lists his birthplace as the "Atlantic Ocean."
Hi all, Yesterday Tom Nagy and I visited the above cemetery with our weed eaters and mower and cleaned this cemetery off. The Bell Hill (Bell Town) Cemetery is an African-American cemetery. It appears that it is abandoned and is no longer in use. It is in poor shape with many sunken graves. Many of the graves are unmarked or just have a piece of fieldstone to indicate a grave is present. It appeared that it hadn't been cleaned off in 2 or 3 years. I transcribed all the stones as best I could. I've got the transcription on-line at http://www.pa-roots.com/~armstrong/townships/pine/bellhill.html There is a "before" and "after" picture there so you can see how bad it was. As soon as I get my film developed I'll be posting pictures of each tombstone. A big thanks to Donna Butler for provide some outstanding directions to get to this cemetery. If you are aware of any other abandoned cemeteries, please let me know. I want to work with the Historical Society in identifying them and preserving them. Nathan

Hi Harriet, I got a kick out of your message. I'm descended from BUZARDs. I recently posted some marriages from the Clarion Co., PA, index for BUZARD/BUZZARDs, no dates though. Some of them married HAWKs Did you see it? Now, it's funny you have CROWEs, too!!! I have an Elvina A. CRAWFORD, who married Robert Howard CAMPBELL. He was born about May 1855, a son of Robert W. CAMPBELL and Sarah HINDMAN. This may not be your CRAWFORD line, and I don't know if they even lived in Armstrong County. Maybe they were in Butler County, but I wonder, does anyone else have any information about Robert and Elvina? Did they have any children? Jim Hindman

I am looking for the names of Jacob Lafferty's wife and children. This Jacob Lafferty was in the 1830 census of Armstrong County, PA., in the town of Kittanning. Thank You, Kay ksuckow@rmi.net
Armstrong County has a great historical society. Perhaps there is a private family history in their library that includes some of the Green family? So many families in this area are inter-related. That's worth an 'ask'.
