    3. Good Morning, No offense to PAF users, but why would anyone want to continue to use software that will never be updated? PAF served it's purpose and it is time to let it retire. The online function of the FS Tree is not -IMHO- acceptable either. Reasons? As of right now, there is no way to create a gedcom for backup and the whole system of servers that FS uses are subject to internal server errors. Who knows what havoc that causes to data? So, in the interest of finding and using modern genealogical software, let me just say that there are a lot of programs out there that are not only inexpensive, but exciting to use. Granted, there is a learning curve to everything we do webwise, but that is what keeps our minds functioning. Try Legacy Family Tree 8, there is a free version and the deluxe version is only $30.00. This is cheap compared to some of the other stuff out there. FTM is more expensive and of course is owned by Ancestry. Both Roots Magic and Legacy integrate with FS which is an interesting search tool when used properly. Here is a list of others: https://familysearch.org/products One last bit of information. The past couple of years has brought a proliferation of businesses that promote Genealogical research by offering online data entry and storage of that data. As with any purchase: Buyer Beware! Those businesses that offer online data entry can and will sell your files. The ability to control who sees and uses your research should be you, not Ancestry, My Heritage or even FamilySearch. Take a look at your contract and make sure you understand the ramifications of it all. Finally, be sure that a gedcom can be created and off-loaded. Also that all media files can be saved off site. Servers are frail and can fail. There is no guarantee that any of the Paid online Genealogical Services will send you a full backup if their systems fail.
