    1. [ALL] Joseph L. Leslie and Lincoln letter

    3. One of my brick walls is finding the parents of Joseph L. Leslie. I may have posted before but thought I would try again. According to Civil War records I believe Joseph was born in Grave Creek??, WV approximately 1824 which may have been called something else at the time of his birth. Joseph was married to Sabra Hartwell and married in Jamestown, NY. He lived in Athens, PA in 1850, Titusville, PA in 1860 and served in the 18th PA Cavalry Company D from 1862-1865. I have all of his Civil War Records. In the 1870 census his wife Sabra was living in Titusville and in 1880 she was living in Allegheny and marital status was reported as widowed. In 1900 Joseph (I think this is my Joseph) was living in Union, Clearfield, PA with his sister-in -law (If this is correct then his brother is Noah Leslie). Joseph died March 23, 1905 in Marion, Indiana and is buried in Marion National Cemetery. I believe his father was born in Scotland- this is consistent on most all of the census for Joseph and Noah. I have Sabra's death date and a good amount of information on Noah's family. Noah died in 1892 in Summerville, PA but I don't have a death record. I could use any suggestions to find out more about Joseph's parents but here are my questions: -I had found a census for 1870 or 1880 that had a Joseph Leslie that I thought was mine (could have been listed as JL Leslie or Jos Leslie or spelled Lesley) but I must have misplaced it and I currently don't have a subscription to ancestry-If I remember correctly in this census he was living in Ohio and I believe it had his birthplace as WV or VA and he was married again. can someone find this for me? -are there any birth records for Grave Creek WV? -his brother Noah was born in either Ohio or PA approximately 1822 but I have not been able to find any record of this. Suggestions? -In the book "The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln" I saw this and was wondering if anyone would know where a copy could be found if there actually is a copy: Oct. 19. To Ethan A. Hitchcock, on petition for exchange of Lieut. Thomas J. Crossley, 57th Pa. Vols., and Joseph L. Leslie, 18th Pa. Cav,"Respectfully submitted to Gen. Hitchcock A. LINCOLN " Thanks in advance for you help.

    3. Dawn: Doing a quick check at familysearch there is a pension record for him. You should be able to order his records from NARA? which may give that information.
