Like Beverly, I too gave your posting a little thought. I looked for Patrick and Mary Ann in the 1910 census, and found them in Swissvale. Patk was 34y, Mary 33y, Patk Jr 5y, Mary 4y, William 2y. AND John Berry 66y, said to be "grandfather". Usually that relationship is supposed to be relationship to the head of household. But I think it should have been "father' in this case. In the 1920 census the Martin Berry household has a John Berry, 77y, "father" in it. To your knowledge was Patrick's father named John, and did Patrick have a bro. named Martin? I couldn't find Mary Ann Berry in PA in 1920, but of course she could have remarried since she had small kids to care for. However, I found her back(? did she ever leave?) in Montana, not remarried, with 6 kids, in a rented duplex, the youngest born abt the same time Patrick died in 1917. She had no job/occupation, only one of the kids was employed, as a newsboy. Does your family narrative explain that? None of my business of course, but I just wonder why if she went back east, why she didn't stay to be near family, but went back to MT to a rented home, no job, and 6 kids to care for. These are genealogical questions worth asking, in my opinion. These are the kinds of questions we should ask if we are doing interviews with family members. So, is it then possible that she sent Patricks remains home to Swissvale to be buried perhaps next to his Mother? I searched on Find a Grave to see if there were any Berry's buried in Allegheny County, and I found possibles buried in All Saints Cemetery in Braddock, near Swissvale: found entries for Martin (3/2/1958) and John, and a mention of Francis. John was living in 1920, I'd check the PA Death Cert Index for the next x-number of years for him, and if a good hit is found for him, to send for the cert to see if it connects to the Berry family you know. Ditto with Martin. I'd also check the Google digitized newspapers, discussed a day or so ago, for a possible classified obit for him. It might be possible that Patrick is buried with these other Berry's in All Saints Braddock with no headstone. A query to Catholic Cemeteries Assn (which manages lots of these RC cemeteries) at Calvary Cemetery in Hazelwood may detail a burial for Patrick. My thoughts are that a printed obit for Patrick may not be found in the Press or Post-Gazette, but may be found in a local Mon Valley Newspaper. Someone used to post here that gave nice PR to a local library in that area that had microfilm for one of those local newspapers. Mon Valley Heritage Center or some such? I can't remember since that isn't my geographic focus. Bella On 01/04/14, conaught2<conaught2@charter.net> wrote: Hi Beverly, Thank you for the great suggestion. I think the death cert didn't list anything that would give us a clue, but it has been many years since I last looked for the record. Just pulled the copy of the death certificate out and unfortunately it has Anaconda as the burial place. Patrick's son said that his father was buried in Swissvale. Patrick's body was definitely taken by train to either Swissvale, Braddock or Rankin. I am hoping the obituary in the Pittsburgh area papers might mention that he died in Montana and where he was buried locally. It is interesting that you list Certificate # 123-48. I have a copy of the death certificate file # is 21774 and Register # is 1192. Thank you again for looking for Patrick's record and your helpful suggestion. Dear Bella, You have given me a lot to think about. I did contact all the cemeteries in the area many years ago and none of them showed a record for Patrick T. Berry. I have the 1910 Census record. The John age 66 is a puzzle. I had originally thought he was Patrick T.'s father but his father's name was also Patrick and both of them were born in Ireland. 'I found some Berrys but didn't know how or if they were related to Patrick. I found an obituary for a Patrick Berry of Swissvale and wondered about his relationship to Great Uncle Patrick Berry. My Great Aunt Mary A. had a grocery store. My Dougherty family were store keepers. My Grandmother had a store and her other sister Madge had two stores in Anaconda. Another Great Aunt had a store in the family home in Malin Head following in the footsteps of my Great Grandparents. I will check with my cousin regarding the move back to Swissvale. Edward is the only known sibling of Patrick T. There isn't any Martin as far as we know. We have thought that Patrick T. might have cousins in the Braddock/Swissvale area. Thank you for searching the records. You have given me several excellent clues. Many years ago I tried and came up empty handed. I need to recheck the records as you pointed out. Great Aunt Mary Ann moved to Anaconda to be near my Grandmother, her sister and her other sister Madge. Originally my Great Grandfather Patrick Doherty (Dougherty) immigrated from Malin Head, County Donegal and moved to Braddock and built a house on the horse shoe bend of the railroad. When the Civil War broke out he found in the Union Army and then returned to County Donegal at the close of the war. I believe he came with a brother and sister. Many years ago during my research I met a gentleman from Braddock and he was quite knowledgeable about the history of the area. He was a tremendous help. When I mentioned the horse-shoe bend near the railroad he was the first person I had spoken with who knew about it. The horse-shoe bend near the railroad used to be 13th Street, but many years ago, it was wiped out to make room for the steel mill to expand. The railroad that goes by it is the Pennsylvania Railroad. There is also the Baltimore and Union Railroads in Braddock.
