    3. Hi group: Let me dispel a commonly held myth. Immigrations did not change peoples names. When a ship pulled into a U.S. port the ships captain was required to have a manifest of all passengers. If anyone has searched ancestry or the Ellis Island site you can find these manifests. Immigration took the names off of these lists and then matched the people coming off the ship to that manifest. My father-in-law is typical of people who had their name changed, but not by immigrations. On the Ellis Island record his name was Majdanik, which is the name from Poland. I'm in contact with his family there to verify that. However, my father-in-law was illiterate and did not no how to spell his name. Just about every record I've found his name is spelled differently. My wifes name on her birth certificate is Madenich.
