Looking for description and location of Pleasant Valley-- have heard of it in old family papers and now stumbled across mention of it in a Nov 30, 1868 Pitt Gaz article - "....Pleasant Valley is the euphonious title given to a rookery of shanties up a stinking hollow.- Mail Messrs. Editors: The gentleman who penned the euphonious article on Pleasant Valley in Saturday's Mail should remember one fact. Whoever carries a bad smell always with him will not fail to smell something whereever he goes. Let the purification begin at the right place- Citizen Our neighbor of the Mail is sadly mistaken in his description of Pleasant Vally, as there are few more delightful places about our city, and the residences along it are as neat, handsome and elegant as those found in most neighborhoods." So- what was the Mail? Would like to see that article--- annie
We have a Pleasant Valley area -- east/northeast of Pittsburgh -- not far from Sharpsburg. The area is in what one might call a "hollow", and today, many of the older homes have been destroyed to make room for a roadway, however, several remain. The reference to "Mail" appears to me to indicate the comment(s) were sent to them via US Mail and not from a publication of that name. There definitely is a place called Pleasant Valley in or around Sharpsburg, It may just be called that by the "old timers". My late father-in-law's family of 12 (family of Frank and Mary Lupinacci) lived in the hollow at Pleasant Valley back around the time of the Depression. Over the years I have often heard it spoken of by the family. I know I have been in the area (and past where they lived many years ago) when going up to St. Mary's Cemetery on what I believe is called Sharp's Hill. I'm struggling to remember what I have heard over the years.
