My great-grandmother is Lizzie M. Collier who lived in Wilkinsburg and Pitcairn. She died in 1964, age 92. On her death certificate, it has listed as cause of death: bronchopneumonia which she had had for two days. I understand what that is. But it then lists two ailments under the pneumonia entry as "due to" Encephalomalacia 10 years and cerebral sclerosis 10 years. I looked up those diseases on the internet, but didn't get very satisfactory explanations. And my Nurse Practitioner sister-in-law was not really helpful either. Can anyone explain those diseases? Were they terms used back in the 60s for dementia? Encephalomalacia means softness in the brain, whatever that means. And I couldn't find anything on the cerebral sclerosis. the search engine always brought MS. Bill Johnson
