In the severe end of the dementia, pneumonia could very well be secondary to these problems, because the brain just forgets to make the body function. When there is a loss of movement, this frequently results in the build up of fluids in the lungs therefore having pneumonia, causing the final death. I was a nurse for 20 years and we would see this be the final cause of death, but really leading up to it was the end of alzheimers when every single thing had to be done for the resident, including moving them in bed and they were curled up like a fetus. Final cause of death being pneumonia, but in reality it was the end state of the alzheimer's just forge! tting to take care of the body with even a simple cough.
