Hi Claudia, Here¹s the url for the Pgh Press by months in 1920. Use the pull-down menu at left above newspapers to ask for years or just click the arrow at the far left of month/year and go by months to 1918 and to April 1918. Then click VIEW ALL on the week in which you¹re interested. You¹ll find there are 24 pages to read in the 8 April 1918 and 32 for 9 April. I searched for an article about Simon BAUER who, as I understand it, was crushed between two train cars in 1885. His church death record read: Death record at St. Peter¹s E & R German Lutheran Church: ³ Januar 1885; Auf der R. R. zwischen 2 [omeinan? ???] der stostende ? Wagen gekommen und nach 4 Stunden gestorben; Simon Bauer geboren Rosenhof bei Rauschensteig in Baiern. alt 45 Jahre, 11 Monate & 3 Tage.; Wittmer Kath....Metz und 2 Söhne.² BUT note that German origin: born Rosenhof by Rauschensteig in Bavaria! The German Language newspaper had the greater information: Der Freiheits-Freund [Pittsburgh] the issue of 30 Jan 1885, Page 4, Column 6: ³Starb: Bauer. In Turtle Creek, am Mittwoch, den // 28 Januar 1885, Abends um 7 Uhr, Simon // Bauer, in seinem 46. Lebensjahr. In Turtle Creek, on Wednesday the 28th of January 1885, at 7 o¹clock in the evening, Simon Bauer, in his 46th year of life. The body/corpse will arrive this afternoon around 1 o¹clock at the East Liberty [railroad] Station and the obsequies/funeral takes place about 1:30 this afternoon in the German Lutheran Church, corner of Collins Avenue and Station Street, after which friends and relatives are invited to the home/residence. BUT NOTE that the English newspaper never even mentioned his name!.... The Pittsburgh Chronicle Telegraph, the issue of 29 Jan 1885, Page 1, Column 6: ³Man Killed at Turtle Creek. The Coroner received a dispatch this morning that a man had been killed on the coal railroad of the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company, at Turtle Creek, yesterday afternoon. The case will be investigated.² So, look for the event, but not necessarily your man by name. The first is Charles Anthony Sperl d. 8 April,. 1918. My husbands say the family story is he fell under a moving train and his two legs were amputated. (Millvale PA) He was employed by the railroad. The second is another uncle, Joseph Edward Sperl d. 11 February , 1920. (Millvale PA) He is the brother of the above Charles. When I try to search the index all I get is the notice that the issues are unavailable. I would like to find the obits and I would like to know the procedure for reading these archived newspapers. I find it hard to believed that for two years the papers are unavailable. Claudia Sperl
