Hi, List. I am trying to find out what happened to the William F. Zepfel Funeral Home, when they might have closed, and where their records might be. In 1948, they were located at 272 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh. Their name might have changed, at one point, to the Dorothy B. Zepfel Funeral Home. They are the undertaker listed on the death certificate for my baby sister, Baby Girl Caruthers, and my sister and I are trying to find out what happened to her remains when she was stillborn at St. Margaret's Memorial Hospital 11/22/1948. The hospital says they think her ashes would have been given to the funeral home but we are currently unaware of any burial site for her. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks very much. Nancy -- I can't help with the funeral home records location, but offer this possible insight. 1.) Cremation in 1948 wasn't widely used at all, and it was forbidden by the Catholic church at that time, therefore I'd suspect the stillborn was _not_ cremated. The hospital quotation probably meant "her remains", not her ashes. 2.) St. Margaret's Hospital, at that time, was located in Lawrenceville, not far from St. Mary's RC Cemetery. 3.) Since this was a stillborn, most likely there were no viewing services. 4.) There are Caruthers buried at St. Mary's Cemetery. 5.) The stillborn may have been interred with another Caruthers family member at St. Mary's Cemetery. 6.) Check with the cemetery record holder which is Calvary Cemetery 718 Hazelwood Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15217-2807 (412) 421-9959 (Hazelwood) (indicate you're inquiring about St. Mary's Cemetry, Lawrenceville) Good Luck! -- Norm Karns,Nancy C. wrote: > Hi, List. Hi, List. I did find out where my baby sister's ashes were buried. Thank you to everyone who contributed info and helpful hints in my search for the Zepfel Funeral Home. I took another look at the death certificate and decided to try and find the crematorium and ended up with Homewood Cemetery who had a crematorium in 1948. My sister's ashes were cremated in 1948 and the ashes were buried in Homewood Cemetery's Garden of Rest section for cremated remains in 1952. Homewood was very, very helpful and verified the info from the burial card. Thank you again to everyone who chimed in with advice and leads.
