Well, I'm going to jump in here. Carol, if they lived in County Down, are you sure they attended the Church of Ireland there? Were they Irish, or Scots who immigrated during the Plantation of Ulster period? If so, they were probably Presbyterians in Ireland and Presbyterians in Pittsburgh. It is my understanding that most of the Protestants in Northern Ireland were Presbyterians. Correct me if I am wrong. I have found a William H. Giltrap and wife, Ellen, in the mid to late 19th century city directories. At one time they were living in the 17th ward (Lawrenceville area). I am on the trail to prove that my 3rd great-grandmother, Margaret Roy, wife of Robert, was a Gouldtrap before an 1846 marriage in Kilkeel,Down, Ireland. They also lived in the 17th ward. A related question: Where did families who attended the Church of Ireland before immigration worship in the 17th ward area? Was there a pulling away from the state church when the Scot-Irish immigrated? Thank in advance for any clues. I know of no feud between Church of Ireland and Church of England. The same, just different countries. Since the old 17th was part of Lawrenceville, they probably attended St. Keirnan's (not sure of the spelling but I think it still exists.). The Church of Ireland is a Protestant church. The Chutrch of Ireland is the Irish equivalent of The Church of England. It became the official legal church of Ireland because the crown made it that way. The Catholic Church in Ireland was illegal or at least unrecognized until mid 1800's as were several other religions to varing degree. That I am 100% certain. I am not certain but believe they would have been Episcopal in Pittsburgh similar to Evangelische in germany being called Lutheran in US.
