Mary Ann, I think the early JP's didn't record anything. Mine were in 1867 and I doubt there is a record anywhere. I also think my gr. grandmother was Catholic and he was not so that's why they went from Allegheny to Lawrence Co. to get married. Kind of like people from the Pittsburgh area going to Wheeling or Winchester later. Hi group: I was perusing the subject looking for my Rouzer line when I noted that in the Will and probate file index the first column after the name is the date of death and location, even for those without a will. Sort of a death index. Worth checking out if you have anyone that lived there. Newbies take note: FHL equals Family History Library equals www.FamilySearch.org equals LDS equals Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter Day Saints equals Mormons and their free website which we non-Mormon believing, genealogy-loving folks use with much pleasure. And while you're at it, take an hour and study that most powerful website. There is so MUCH genealogical info there it will make your eyes bleed. On the main search page scroll down and limit your search to a specific state, or international county. They have 15 sets of wonderful records for the state of PA !! For me, I am presently starry-eyed over the digitized records of an obscure village in the Palermo area of Sicily called Valledolmo. I've viewed the actual films at local LDS churches, some of which are privileged to have Family History Centers in them. Not all the LDS records have been microfilmed. A search through their online library catalog may turn up records that you can only view in their main library in Salt Lake City, UT, or at the FHCs. And remember...Google, Bing, and other popular search engines can be your best friend. Bella On 01/02/14, Karns,Nancy C.<NKARNS@travelers.com> wrote: In regards to below explanation, who is "FHL"? Pennsylvania did not require marriage licenses until October 1885. Prior to that date, some city health departments required any individual who performed a marriage to send in a marriage return to the health department. Pittsburgh began to require these in 1870; Allegheny City in about 1878 (but records are spotty and only go to 1882). The 1875-1885 Pittsburgh marriage returns are on microfilm, although there are some months with no records. The 1870-1875 records are in a 3 volume set of abstracts, but the original microfilmed records are still with the county. The prothonotary was never in charge of marriage records; they were part of the Register of Wills. Today both offices are under the Department of Court Records. Wills now Wills/Orphans Court Division; Prothonotary now Family/Civil Division. Marriages are under Wills/Orphans' Court. There is a problem with the Allegheny County portion of the index/images. FHL never microfilmed the marriage records for Allegheny County between about 1905-06 and the mid-1930s (I do not have exact dates). I know that they filmed the marriage license docket books through volume 70 and that is what you view when you find a marriage before 1906. You do not see the actual marriage license application, although you get all the information (if it was copied correctly). For the later marriages, after 193?, the image is of the actual license application, marriage return and cover. Having done research in Allegheny County by visiting the County, the records are there, it is just a matter of locating them. It is unfortunate that some of the records there are not in Family Search or they are misspelled. The Diocese has records based upon what the Parish reported. I know while searching for a death record with the Diocese, the records form the Parish did not include the Cemetery name and the Cemetery on the Death Records from PA, that block was improperly completed. This was for a Catholic but the Cemetery indicated was a Jewish one. Parents were Catholic and the child is not with the parents or grandparents. Just one of the many brick walls we each have. Just adding my two cents on this subject . . . I've noticed almost none of my family marriages are listed at FamilySearch either, and the bulk of them were united in a Catholic church in Sharpsburg, PA, however, some marriages that were performed outside the church by J.P's or similar, are listed. So my assumption is that the church (or Diocese) did NOT submit the marital data to the county. The data is available via the Diocese, for a fee. This may, or may not, be specific to certain Catholic parishes . . . but in my case it appears to be so. I too will add my experience. I could not find my gparents . So I contacted the Catholic Church in or near the city and they had their marriage record. I am assuming they went directly to the Church. The rectory clerk was very gracious and made a copy for me. She did not ask for a fee, but I mailed a check in her name and Thanked her again. Seriously? Hi group: The fact that you can't find a record doesn't mean there isn't one. I've reported two mis-indexed records to Familysearch in the last two months, and they're pretty good of double checking in their indexing projects. Sometimes you have to use some pretty imaginative wild card searches to find them. When Allegheny court house had the Pgh death records on fiche on the mezzanine they missed indexing my ggrandmother when the created the index. They only way I found her was I had pinned the date down to within 6 months and went through all the records one page at a time. David, I assure you I am not mad about you trying to help me. I apologize if I made you feel this way and really feel bad as this was not my attention. Ancestry has goofed up twice on my account making it public. That is what I was concerned about. NOT that you found the information. I have NEVER made anyone feel this way on any list I belong to for the past 8 years and am thankful for anyone who tries to help me. This was a first for me. Sorry if you were offended. and feel bad you accused me of this. And I do wish you a Happy New year also. -----Original Message----- From: slc33@texas.net Sent: Wednesday, January 01, 2014 7:18 PM To: paallegh@rootsweb.com Subject: [ALL] David and Bessie Bevan Uh Re this No, I used to belong to Ancestry and put all that information on the site.
