    3. Carole, I must smile at your information on your husband's family. When my husband and I became engaged I got the distinct impression his family thought he was marrying down. They believed they were upper social strata and wealthy. As time passed it became out that my family have 4 times as much money to leave us and many more relatives on my side had advance degrees from college and had contributed more to the common good of man. Never judge a book by its cover is a good saying. Often he who says the least knows the most HELEN in PGh. -----Original Message----- From: Carole Mason Sent: Tuesday, January 07, 2014 10:18 AM To: paallegh@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ALL] Christmas break for the list Are you the one researching the mason line from Mass? I don't know how long I have belonged to this list but I do remember when someone by my name, Clare, came on the list and became the boss. (Not really) I started doing Genealogy in 1967 which is 47 years ago. Although I was born in Brackenridge, Pa., at 18, I went to NY. I married at 30 and we lived in Westchester Co. NY. In 1967 we had our 1st son. There were no computers at the time so once a week, I took the train to NYC to the BIG library on 42nd St. to start doing genealogy for a reason that I wilI explain. If I found 1 item every month, I thought I was doing great. Then computers arrived as did Ancestry and various lists. It took me a while to discover that all the info posted to Ancestry was not documented. ! Wh! > y did I start doing Genealogy? My husband knew nothing about his mother's family. He was born in Mass. and his mother died at his birth. Her family wanted nothing to do with the baby because they felt that he killed her. Her family was very wealthy and she married the chauffeur who was my husband's father and from VA. At 6 months old, he took the baby to VA to be raised by his sister and her husband which they followed through after my husband's dad died when he was 11. To this day the following generations involving his mother's family still want nothing to do with us. I feel it is their loss. Our son who was b. in 1967 is now a member of the SAR with 3 surnames and 7 more waiting to be submitted one at a time. 3. All types of odd things happen when you search. Never give up. Sometimes it is years before you find something I found the village in Europe where my great great grandmother came from after 20 years and then by accident. My mother’s name was mis-spelled by a typist in reading her actual cursive birth registration. Never give up until you are sure whatever you are trying to find does no longer exist. Helen in Pgh

    2. Larry is 100% correct on his comment. This too has happened in my family searches, with death records, marriage records, cemetery records, etc. Always, and I stress always, double check, recheck and check again. Good advice Larry! Marybeth =============================================================================================== Date: Wed, 01 Jan 2014 21:29:05 -0500 From: Larry Thompson <lt0168@epix.net> Subject: [ALL] Missing records Hi group: The fact that you can't find a record doesn't mean there isn't one. I've reported two mis-indexed records to Familysearch in the last two months, and they're pretty good of double checking in their indexing projects. Sometimes you have to use some pretty imaginative wild card searches to find them. When Allegheny court house had the Pgh death records on fiche on the mezzanine they missed indexing my ggrandmother when the created the index. They only way I found her was I had pinned the date down to within 6 months and went through all the records one page at a time. Larry

    3. Dear Bella, You have given me a lot to think about. I did contact all the cemeteries in the area many years ago and none of them showed a record for Patrick T. Berry. I have the 1910 Census record. The John age 66 is a puzzle. I had originally thought he was Patrick T.'s father but his father's name was also Patrick and both of them were born in Ireland. 'I found some Berrys but didn't know how or if they were related to Patrick. I found an obituary for a Patrick Berry of Swissvale and wondered about his relationship to Great Uncle Patrick Berry. My Great Aunt Mary A. had a grocery store. My Dougherty family were store keepers. My Grandmother had a store and her other sister Madge had two stores in Anaconda. Another Great Aunt had a store in the family home in Malin Head following in the footsteps of my Great Grandparents. I will check with my cousin regarding the move back to Swissvale. Edward is the only known sibling of Patrick T. There isn't any Martin as far as we know. We have thought that Patrick T. might have cousins in the Braddock/Swissvale area. Thank you for searching the records. You have given me several excellent clues. Many years ago I tried and came up empty handed. I need to recheck the records as you pointed out. Great Aunt Mary Ann moved to Anaconda to be near my Grandmother, her sister and her other sister Madge. Originally my Great Grandfather Patrick Doherty (Dougherty) immigrated from Malin Head, County Donegal and moved to Braddock and built a house on the horse shoe bend of the railroad. When the Civil War broke out he found in the Union Army and then returned to County Donegal at the close of the war. I believe he came with a brother and sister. Many years ago during my research I met a gentleman from Braddock and he was quite knowledgeable about the history of the area. He was a tremendous help. When I mentioned the horse-shoe bend near the railroad he was the first person I had spoken with who knew about it. The horse-shoe bend near the railroad used to be 13th Street, but many years ago, it was wiped out to make room for the steel mill to expand. The railroad that goes by it is the Pennsylvania Railroad. There is also the Baltimore and Union Railroads in Braddock. 1. Re: [ALL] Question on organizing
    2. Linda Harden-Lantz
    3. I to an like several others, I am an organizer. I keep everything in a 3" three ring binder on a book case just behind my chair here in my office. After I put the data into my genealogy software programs, I place the paper in an acid free protective sleeve. Each binders spine is labeled with the SURNAME. The binders are divided inside with a Divider Tab (You can still buy these at Walmart or staples) for census records by county/census year, birth certificates, deeds, tax records, wills, death certificates, correspondence, yDNA testing. Call it being OCD or CDO (in order), but it helps me tremendously when someone asks a question or helps myself if I am looking for a particular document. Now I'm not without some clutter, but my clutter is keep to a minimum until I can no longer stand it and then I clear off of my big dining room table and take those "3" boxes of paper and sort them into surnames and get then into the sleeves and then the binders. If I don't need the paper any longer and/or it is of no value, then I shred the papers I no longer need or want. I also have an external hard drive and several flash drives for my computer and back up everything at least to the external hard drive. I had one computer crash, you can never have too many backup copies of your research. Additionally, I have made a genealogical section in my will to instruct my family where these binders and other genealogy material (books, maps, periodicals) are to be given after my death. So I think I have it all covered. I learned most of my organizational skills early on, back in 1990's, when I joined the Howard County Maryland genealogy society. I didn't just join the local chapter, I absorbed all I heard voraciously and attended every monthly meeting they had and became involved, volunteered, etc.. Even though it wasn't the county I was researching, it was the county I lived in when I began my research. They would have monthly speakers on various subjects and you can learn many research tricks and pointers from being active in your local society. I'll betcha almost every county in the US has one. Just my 2 cents worth. These "treasures" aren't of much help since everything isn't orderly enough to find quickly, or even remember where they are located! I often see too that one e-mail question can be asked and soon more are generated along the same line. Many people learn more readily from visual explanations, too. Those thoughtful replies usually get lost for some of us, as well! Is there any chance that among the seriously knowledgeble genealogists who use this site there could be some who would consider offering a class on this subject (organization! and maybe others) as well, at perhaps one or more local Library, offering a small stipend to be collected for gas expenses and time.) Organization is a matter of great importance and comes as just a suggestion from one who benefits from visual instructions! 1. Re: [ALL] Question on Indexing-Berry, Patrick
    2. Like Beverly, I too gave your posting a little thought. I looked for Patrick and Mary Ann in the 1910 census, and found them in Swissvale. Patk was 34y, Mary 33y, Patk Jr 5y, Mary 4y, William 2y. AND John Berry 66y, said to be "grandfather". Usually that relationship is supposed to be relationship to the head of household. But I think it should have been "father' in this case. In the 1920 census the Martin Berry household has a John Berry, 77y, "father" in it. To your knowledge was Patrick's father named John, and did Patrick have a bro. named Martin? I couldn't find Mary Ann Berry in PA in 1920, but of course she could have remarried since she had small kids to care for. However, I found her back(? did she ever leave?) in Montana, not remarried, with 6 kids, in a rented duplex, the youngest born abt the same time Patrick died in 1917. She had no job/occupation, only one of the kids was employed, as a newsboy. Does your family narrative explain that? None of my business of course, but I just wonder why if she went back east, why she didn't stay to be near family, but went back to MT to a rented home, no job, and 6 kids to care for. These are genealogical questions worth asking, in my opinion. These are the kinds of questions we should ask if we are doing interviews with family members. So, is it then possible that she sent Patricks remains home to Swissvale to be buried perhaps next to his Mother? I searched on Find a Grave to see if there were any Berry's buried in Allegheny County, and I found possibles buried in All Saints Cemetery in Braddock, near Swissvale: found entries for Martin (3/2/1958) and John, and a mention of Francis. John was living in 1920, I'd check the PA Death Cert Index for the next x-number of years for him, and if a good hit is found for him, to send for the cert to see if it connects to the Berry family you know. Ditto with Martin. I'd also check the Google digitized newspapers, discussed a day or so ago, for a possible classified obit for him. It might be possible that Patrick is buried with these other Berry's in All Saints Braddock with no headstone. A query to Catholic Cemeteries Assn (which manages lots of these RC cemeteries) at Calvary Cemetery in Hazelwood may detail a burial for Patrick. My thoughts are that a printed obit for Patrick may not be found in the Press or Post-Gazette, but may be found in a local Mon Valley Newspaper. Someone used to post here that gave nice PR to a local library in that area that had microfilm for one of those local newspapers. Mon Valley Heritage Center or some such? I can't remember since that isn't my geographic focus. Bella On 01/04/14, conaught2<conaught2@charter.net> wrote: Hi Beverly, Thank you for the great suggestion. 1. Re: [ALL] U.S. District Court Records (Bankruptcy)
    2. Anne Gallagher
    3. 'Genie, For bankruptcies, the actual paper file would be at the National Archives in Philadelphia. We recently got copies of a Western District bankruptcy filing from 1930, and the file was in Phila. My husband stopped in at Bankruptcy Court in Pittsburgh one day when he was in town (thinking the file would be there) and they told him all of the older files were held by the National Archives. They were able to give him the Case# and Filing Date, which helped when I contacted NARA. If you have the pertinent info (whose name the bankruptcy was filed under, date filed, etc), you can email NARA < philadelphia.archives@nara.gov > and have one of their archivists retrieve the file (they're stored offsite somewhere) and they can then tell you how large it is, and how to go about getting copies. They can print/mail copies up to 50 or 60 pages; anything larger, you have to either go to Phila and copy everything yourself, or hire a company out there to do it for you. They gave me a couple names of companies that do that, but the file I needed was 400+ pages, so we opted to wait till my husband went out to Phila on business and he just stayed an extra day and copied everything using a digital camera. NARA's charges were pretty reasonable, I think the minimum charge is $20.00 plus .25 per page over a certain number. The outside companies charge by the hour, not sure how much. Some of the info in the file I got was pretty boring, notices of meetings, hearings, things like that. Other things were priceless!!!! Copies of bills from creditors listing items purchased for the house, lists of employees who were owed wages, lists of real estate that I had no idea existed. So it was well worth it, I think. 1. Re: [ALL] Question on Indexing-Berry, Patrick
    2. Hi, Just a thought. Have you obtained a copy of his death certificate from Montana? He is listed as: Berry, Pat T.-Male-15 Sept 1917 Certificate # 123-48. They may have had to list the funeral director that was going to receive the body when it arrived in Pgh. so this might give you a lead to find where he is buried at. Hope this helps. (Montana was pretty fast at getting me my uncle's certificate once I found that he left Pgh and went to Montana area) Beverly Pfeil Paquet Tucson AZ In a message dated 1/3/2014 5:06:03 P.M. Berry (1877-1917) married my Great Aunt Mary Ann Dougherty (Doherty) who was born in Ballyhillin, Malin Head, County Donegal. They were married in Swissvale on June 23, 1904. My Grandmother Catherine Dougherty Smith and Great Uncle Patrick Dougherty moved from Braddock to Anaconda, Montana. By about 1906 Great Aunt Mary Ann and Patrick also moved to Anaconda. Tragedy struck the young family and Patrick was killed in a train accident. Great Aunt Mary Ann Dougherty Berry took her husand's body by train in 1915 to bury him in Swissvale. He died on September 15, 1917. When I contacted the Carneige Library I was told the newspapers for that time weren't available. I checked all the cemeteries in the area of Swissvale, Rankin and Braddo-k without any luck. My cousin, Patrick's grandson has always hoped to find his grandfather's gravesite. Hopefully through your fantastic project Patrick's resting place might be uncovered. Since Great Aunt Mary Ann brought Patrick back for burial I assume he must have had Berry relatives still living in the area. All of my Great Aunt's family was either in Anaconda or Malin Head, County Donegal, although I believe there probably were some Dougherty cousins in the Braddock area. Thank you again for your dedication with this project.
