Listers, My son found a way of translating the over 300 cyrillic headstones in St. George Serbian Orthodox Cemetery on Stewart Ave in the Carrick Section of Pittsburgh. It is not perfect, but if you think someone might buried there with that type of lettering I now have a way of telling you yes or no Helen in Pgh
Hopefully someone may give me some insight into the many look-up organizations available, such as “Archives.com”, “peoplesmart”, “MyHertage”, etc. They seem to offer a week of “free”use and then you pay a membership, a price isn’t necessarily given. Has anyone had good luck with these companies… is it worth the membership fee? Which one may be the best offer, or none of them? I’m trying to find the marriages and divorces of Carolyn Towns, and Carolyn Ritz (same person)from Colorado, probably Denver, or near by. Thanks for any input. Shirley , in MI Sent from Windows Mail

Have you checked what Family Search has online for Colorado. Then go to Google and search " Genealogy in Colorado", you might find societies that have databases on line, libraries with databases on line, many other things that you can get for 'free" or a small charge by a library, society person who will find things locally for you. The databases you mention are huge. Start locally, you might have better luck. Check for City Directories on line, if they lived in a city. You can see when the woman changed her name, if she stayed in the same house. Susanne
Thank you, Clare. I agree, agree, agree, sometimes you have to pay for what you get (or want or need!) And thanks for your list of sites. Hi Shirley, I'm not familiar with CO and therefore do not know what information is available. But to answer your overall question it depends on the subscription information. Sometimes its worth it and sometimes not. Let me give you an example. I was researching NC area and Ancestry.com had a ton of information for the people I was researching but couldn't find anything on some of my PA people. I tried again a few months ago and they have a ton on my PA people as well. If there is a trial version available, I would try them and then cancel if it doesn't meet your needs. Just as an FYI, many of the paid sites are available for free at my local library. Hope this helps! Before I'd try any of the subscription services that you mentioned, I'd try the TOTALLY FREE WEBSITE [1]www.familysearch.org which is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS/Mormons). This is an oft-asked question. We each have our opinions and mine is that if you are serious researcher, you're going to have to spend some money (OR go sit at the library to use subscription services) along with using free services. Most of the sites complement each other; some duplicate but not many. OK, I'm getting on my soapbox now: It is very expensive for a company to: 1. buy the rights to records 2. pay for the travel for employees to go to the place where they are housed 3. pay for them to stay there - housing and food while there 4. pay the employees to film the records 5. pay for the equipment that films them 6. in most cases, pay employees to index the records 7. pay to host the records 8. pay employees to maintain the collections 9. pay employees to do customer service and many more. THAT's why so many are subscription services. The few that are "free" are either being paid for with ads, donations that will eventually run out or by tax-exempt businesses, so in a way, we are all paying for that last service whether we are genealogists or not. I subscribe yearly to Ancestry and GenealogyBank and Civil War Research. The rest of the subscription places, I do a month at a time, get all I can find and cancel. BEFORE you subscribe to ANYTHING, please look at what they have to make sure it's what you need. For instance, GenealogyBank has newspapers for Philadelphia, a major area of my research, but not for Pittsburgh, the other major area. Here is the partial list of the sites I use regularly. Amy@ArnerResearch.com Carol, I am _hoping_ you need a PA researcher? If so, Amy is one of the best IMO. I have used her service, she is thorough, sends easily-read reports, suggests additional research if that is required; finally, her costs/fees were reasonable. I do not know that Amy is/is not still working, just as I am unclear as to whether your research needs are in PA, but here's hoping. You may use my name, if you wish, as source of referral. It won't gain you any benefits, but some folks prefer a source of referral. Hi Bob, et al, Emma Alice (Fritzius) McMinn is my relative. We share ancestors Johan George Fritzius and Eva Catherine Fritzius (nee Jordan) that arrived on Aug 20 1802 in Philadelphia on the Ship Belvidere. They were in Philadelphia in 1820 and by 1830 they were in Mifflin Twp., Allegheny Co., PA. Some of the descendants used the surname Fritz.
